Teare & Dunn Win Last Mixed Doubles Title of 2021 Season

Photo: Glynn HargravesCastletown Bowling Club hosted the Wilfrid Quayle mixed doubles on Sunday with the competition attracting a fine entry of 44 pairs.
The eventual winners were Marown pair Rebecca Teare and Paul Dunn taking a hard earned win over Sue Gawne (Onchan) and Andy Kennish (Peel).
In the early stages of the final neither pairing were able to build a lead with the score tied at 12-12 after eight ends, Teare and Dunn then started to take control of the game going on to win seven of the last nine ends to run out with a 21-16 win to take the last mixed doubles title of the season.
Losing out 16-21 at the semi-final stage were the home green pairing of Kath Kinley and Dean Kinley to the winning pair, while Husband and Wife Alec (Peel) and Philippa Taylor (Marown) were defeated 12-21 by Gawne and Kennish.
Falling at the quarter final stage were Grace Gawne (Onchan) and Kevin Firth (Douglas) who lost out 18-21 to the Taylor’s. South Ramsey pair Kim Hargraves and Stefan Kelly were defeated 15-21 by Gawne and Kennish. 2020 winners Lyn Bolton (South Ramsey) and Trevor Quayle (Port St Mary) were well beaten 11-21 by Teare and Dunn, while Jenny Moore and James Teare (South Ramsey) were pipped at the post 20-21 by Kath Kinley and Dean Kinley.
The presentation was made by Castletown Club Member Hilary Kermode who thanked everyone who had entered, the green keepers along with the club members who had helped with the smooth running of the competition throughout the day.
MAROWN LADIES RETAIN JMS VETERANS SHIELD
The semi-finals and final of the JMS Veterans Shield were played last Thursday at Port Erin.
Getting through to the semis were Marown (last year’s holders), Port St Mary A, South Ramsey and Castletown A.
The first semi was between Marown and Port St Mary. Unfortunately Port St Mary were a player short and this did impact on the score with Marown taking the match six games to nil and by 51 points. In the second semi, South Ramsey played Castletown with South winning four games to two and by 23 points.
With the individual handicaps in place, the final started with South off 19 points and Marown off 14. The first three games on the green saw Mair Moore, Joyce Ogden and Celia Joughin (Marown) taking on Elaine Moore, Gillian Jopson and Moira Anderson. Elaine for South won to one with Joyce and Celia winning to 6 and 11. With scores equal at the halfway stage it was still all to play for. Fourth, fifth and sixth games saw Rosie Winckle, Philippa Taylor and Lynda Cadamy (Marown) playing Sue Collier, Ann Gale and Judy Kelly. The Marown trio proved too strong with Rosie, Philippa and Lynda winning to 9, 11 and 8 respectively. Overall result was five games to one for Marown and by 40 points. A well deserved win for the Crosby ladies.
The presentation of trophy and prizes was made by the sponsor of the competition Janet Latham who is also the Ladies Association Treasurer. Marown Captain, Philiippa Taylor, on behalf of her ladies thanked Janet for her continued sponsorship, Port Erin for the use of their green and the excellent refreshments, anyone who helped on the day and all their opponents.
In the Open Age League current leaders Castletown A ladies suffered their first defeat of the season away at fourth placed South Ramsey last Friday night. Elaine Moore, Fiona Kennish and Lauren Groen (South) all won to single figures as did Kath Kinley for Castletown. Game of the match was between Sue Collier (South) against Alison Kearsley with both ladies matching each other point for point. At 20 across Alison was lying game only for Sue to play a great bowl to get the point she needed to win 21-20.
Port St Mary and Marown who are currently second and third in the league table, both had good away wins at Peel and Douglas respectively. Therefore, Castletown A head the leader board on 3413 points followed by Port St Mary on 3250 with Marown third on 3179 only one point ahead of South Ramsey on 3178. With two fixtures remaining, I feel Castletown may have done enough to win the league, but second and especially third and fourth places are still very much up for grabs.
Caroline Parker Wins Ramsey Town Cup

Photo: Pat LentonA disappointing entry did not deter the spirit and friendliness of North Ramsey Bowling Club at this year’s Ladies Ramsey Town Cup played on Saturday 28th August at Mooragh Park. Conditions could not have been better with sunshine all afternoon.
Following great games in the opening rounds the first semi-final was played between Victoria Johnson and Anne Kean with a convincing win for Victoria 21-3. The second semi was between Caroline and Janet Monk. This was a much closer game with both players fighting for every point and lying 19 across in the final stages. On the last end Caroline secured the final point she needed to win her place in the final 21-19.
The final between Victoria and Caroline was a convincing win for Caroline who had been playing really well all day. The score does not reflect the standard of play with Victoria demonstrating her considerable talent but Caroline was so accurate and retained the jack for most of the match clinching her victory with a 21-1 win.
The prizes were presented by Peggy Freeman, who is Chair of North Ramsey, and she thanked all the members for helping on the day, especially the male members who had prepared the green and carried out all of the measuring as well as running the sheet. She also gave thanks to the anonymous local business who sponsored the event and made the considerable prize money possible.
FULL HOUSE FOR MAROWN A LADIES
Last Wednesday night Marown A scored a full house at home against Peel in the ladies crown green bowling open age league. The win was helped greatly by four of the Marown ladies winning to single figures. Joyce Ogden and Mary Moffatt had a tough battle with Joyce eventually winning to 18. Douglas had a good 5-4 win away at Mooragh Park with the closest game being between Victoria Johnson (Mooragh) and Jane Lothian with the latter winning to 19. Michelle Cowley and Paula Garrett (Douglas) plus Janet Monk for Mooragh, all won to single figures. Port St Mary travelled to Onchan coming away with a convincing 7-2 win. Two winners for Onchan were Paula Firth and Jo Smith who won to 6 and 16 respectively. Castletown derby ended with the A team just missing out on a maximum by four points. Preventing this was Linda Dobinson (B) who won to 17 against Amanda Lawler. Marown B travelled to Port Erin with the Marown ladies winning by 6 points. Jenny Cain and Jacqui Elliot (Port) plus Clare Cooper for Marown all won to single figures. Closest match of the night was Ballaugh at home against South Ramsey. Ballaugh won by three points with four of the games being won to single figures.
Over 60s ladies league: Two rearranged fixtures were played last Thursday. Results : Mooragh Park A 64 (1), Marown 116 (5); Onchan A 113 (4, Peel 88 (2)
On Tuesday morning Port St Mary A played Onchan B at home whilst Onchan A took on Port St Mary B. Both matches resulted in full houses for PSM A and Onchan A with PMS A winning by 67 points and Onchan A winning by 66 points. Two teams who just missed out on scoring maximums by two points were Ballaugh and Castletown A. Ballaugh played Port Erin at home with Julie Reilly and Jane Teare for Ballaugh both losing to 20 against Voirrey Curphey and Steph Swift. Castletown A were away to Mooragh Park A with Anne Oates for Castletown just losing to 19 against Maureen Hamilton.
The IOM September Festival commences on Monday morning. Wishing all competitors, organisers and helpers a successful and enjoyable week of bowling.
All to Play For – Marown A Make Their Move
In Ellan Vannin Fuels Division One the match of the week was undoubtedly the game at Crosby between Marown A and Peel A with the home team starting the match two points behind their opponents. The Crosby men made home advantage count as they reversed the result from the away fixture to win 8-2. The two winners for the visitors were Tom Kelly who stormed home 21-5 against Juan Killip, while George Gadsby just got over the line 21-20 against Matthew Keggen. Just losing out 19-21 were Peter Greenlees and Andy Kennish to Phil Kelly and Paul Kelly respectively. For the home team Neil Withers impressed with his 21-9 win over Tommy McMeiken, Colin Kelly beat Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly 21-10, while the two captains Paul Dunn and Gary Smith were up against each other with Dunn winning 21-15. John Gelling also picked up a win for his team as he beat Stevie Kelly 21-16. Marown have now crept up to second place and are well positioned for the run in with four of their five fixtures on their home green.
Noble’s A hosted league leaders South Ramsey A who extended their league with a 1-9 victory. Lone winner for the Noble’s men was Mark ‘Postie’ Quinn who delivered a resounding 21-12 win over Stefan Kelly. Next highest scorer for the home team was Sam Stannard-Duke who lost 14-21 against South Ramsey captain Glynn Hargraves. Winning to single figures for the visitors were Peter Collister, David Bradford, James Teare and Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly. Whilst South have a nine point lead they know all too well that a tough run in with away fixtures to Marown A, Peel A and Douglas A, their lead could soon slip away.
Peel B took one step closer to safety as they won 7-3 at home to Port St Mary A. For Peel captain Paul ‘Pooky’ Quirk won 21-9 against Will Cain, with team mate Dave Smith claiming the biggest win of the night 21-5 against Paul Russell. Port lost two games to 20-21 with Ray Watterson and Tom Collins on the wrong end of the result to Brian Lindsay and Robert Middleton respectively. For Port Robbie Cooil beat Michael Kavanagh 21-14, Wayne Roberts eased to a 21-11 win over Gordon Corrin, while Trevor Quayle had to fight for his 21-19 win over David Proctor.
Onchan A kept visitors Ballaugh A under 100 points as the visitors were well beaten 9-1. The only Ballaugh winner was Richard Hainge who is playing his first season in the top division with Hainge pulling off a stunning 21-11 win over Reginald Temporaza, who has proved a tough opponent for many bowlers this season. Four home winners ran out with single figure wins from Frank Watson, Phil Kerruish, Jordan Cain and Kevin Quirk.
North Ramsey A and Marown B battled it out at Mooragh Park with the home team winning 6-4 with only eight chalks separating the teams (145-137). The wins from the home team were comfortable. For the visitors Steve Wilson stepped in for the Crosby men, he impressed with his 21-15 win over Geoff Porter, Glenn Boland beat captain Gary Merrill 21-12, while John Kelly won 21-20 against Allan Callow.
Castletown A had a solid 7-3 home win over Douglas A. Winning for the visitors were the in-form Andy Cannell and Shaun Seal with comfortable wins, while Jimmy Sansom beat Town captain Ian Watson 21-19. Bob Clark recorded the best win for the home team with his 21-9 win over Merv Sayle, with Sam Clague, Nathan Hamilton and Aaron Richardson also taking good wins, while Dean Kinley beat Kevin Firth 21-19 in a close game.
In Division Two league leaders South Ramsey B bounced back from the previous weeks’ poor result as they won 10-0 at home to Finch Hill B with the result never in doubt with the highest scoring Finch Hill players reached 15 chalks. The visitors scored 65 chalks overall on the night, not helped by being a man short.
Port Erin A helped their cause for promotion with a good 8-2 win at Breagle Glen over Castletown B with three single figure wins from Peter Addison, Seamus Whelan and Harry Minor, whilst their other three wins they had to work for as Bernie Durcan beat Ross Moore 21-18, Ken Horsley won 21-19 against Ron Williams, while Derek Cadamy just snatched a 21-20 win against Peter Oates. The two losses for Port Erin could also have gone the other way with David Cain losing 19-21 to Collin Holland and Derek Allen was beat 20-21 by George Foy.
Onchan B are seven points further back on the league leaders with a game in hand following their 4-6 away win over Douglas B. The result could just as easily have ended up 2-8 to Onchan as they lost two games 20-21 with Will Penhallurick and Mike Kelly losing to William Cowley and Rob Matthews respectively. The match was one of the highest scoring games of the season with just five chalks separating the teams (149-154).
Port St Mary B had a tough time at home as they lost 2-8 to South Ramsey C. Their two winners were Peter Collins who beat Paul Routledge 21-15 and Derek Cain who won 21-10 against Tony Marler, while Nick Peterson lost 20-21 to South Ramsey captain Tony Hart. The visitors had two single figures winners with James Evans beating Andy Sykes 21-5, with team mate Andy Morgan winning 21-9 against Ray Maddrell.
Marown C carried the feel good factor from the Rayner Plate final into their home fixture with Peel C, with Walter McCarthy beating Phillip Clarke 21-2, Kevin Kelly won 21-17 against Alan Cromwell with captain Stephen Rundle having to dig deep to beat Harry Kelly 21-20. Winning for Peel were Mike Ashmole as he beat Jamie Joughin 21-14, while Kevin Mort beat Stephen Storey 21-16.
In Division Three Onchan C stayed in top spot with a five-point lead despite losing 7-3 away to Ballaugh B. The northern team do have a game in hand on the leaders and are well placed to return to the top of the league.
Port Erin B and Marown D played out a 5-5 draw at Breagle Glen as the visitors only won three games but took the chalks courtesy of a walkover which resulted in them taking the aggregate by just four chalks (133-137).
South Ramsey D lost 4-6 at home to Ballaugh C. For the Ballaugh men Nigel Tebay was relentless with his 21-2 win over Robert Snape. For the home team Jay Moore was the best winner as be won 21-8 against his Uncle Gordie Moore, while Junior player Ryan Hargraves recovered from a 11-18 deficit to run out with a 21-18 win over Richard Green.
Peel D kept visitors Douglas C to just 92 chalks as then won 8-2, thanks to three single figure wins, with Douglas getting one single figure win as Greg Brew won 21-8 against Owen Crompton.
Douglas D lost 3-7 at home to Noble’s B losing the aggregate by just six chalks (140-146). The home team wins came from Nick Firth, Juan Readshaw and David Cowley.
MOORAGH PARK SHINE AT PEEL
In the Ladies Crown Green Bowling Open Age League, Mooragh Park recovered from their defeat last week with a good 7-2 away win at Peel on Friday night. Result was helped by Mooragh’s junior ladies bowling well with Shannon McMullan, Victoria Johnson and Aalish Howarth winning to 8, 16 and 15 respectively with their youngest bowler, Lacey McMullan, losing to 18 against Celia Smith. Closest game was between Louise Horsfall (Peel) and Pat Lenton with the latter winning to 19. Ballaugh also played well away to Castletown B winning by 42 points. Michelle Cubbon, Louise Tebay and Cath Harvey (Ballaugh) all won to single figures, as did Rachel Palmer for Castletown B. Toughest games of the night pitched Pat Rigby, Joy Stephens and Ann Hollingworth (Castletown) against Maria Dinsdale, Christine McDonald and Barbara Graham with Pat winning to 19, Joy to 20 and Barbara to 18.
In the ladies Over 60s league on Tuesday morning, Port St Mary home derby resulted in a full house for the ‘A’ team ladies. Four of the six games were all won to single figures with the closest result being a 21-15 win for Mavis Franks against Chris Holland. Castletown A played host to Onchan A and although the match finished three all on games, Castletown won by 12 points. Peel also had a good home win against Mooragh Park A only dropping five points. Given these results and with both Peel and Onchan A having a game in hand, the title is still up for grabs.
CASTLETOWN A LEAD THE WAY IN THE OVER 60S AND OPEN AGE LEAGUES
With only six league matches left to play in the Over 60s ladies league it couldn’t be closer at the top of the leader board with only 80 points separating first and third. Currently Castletown A are in first place, followed by Peel and then Port St Mary A. Castletown’s lead was greatly helped by a five-one win at home to their B team. It could have been a full house, but preventing this was Pat Rigby who won 21-20 against Barbara Young. Port St Mary A kept up the pressure with a good away at Peel. All games went into double figures with the closest game being Mary Moffatt against Trish Bull with Mary running out 21-18.
In the Open Age league, with only five fixtures remaining, there is a similar picture evolving as above with Castletown A currently in the lead followed by Port St Mary and then Marown A; a total of only 228 points separating first and third. Castletown A extended their lead slightly with a home win against Peel last Friday night. Kim Foy, Alison Kearsley and Tracy Moore, with Terri Berry for Peel all won their games to single figures. Port St Mary, keeping up the pressure, also had a good away win at Marown B. Closest game was between Helen Withers (Marown) and Trish Bull with the latter winning to 20. Marown A travelled to the Mooragh Park coming away with a good six-three win having to give a game away due to being a player short.
JMS VETERANS SHIELD
Final round (game 6) of the JMS Veteran’s Shield took place last Thursday. Going through to the semi-finals are Port St Mary A from Group A, South Ramsey from Group B, Marown from Group C and Castletown A from Group D. Semi-finals and final will be held at Port Erin on Thursday 2 September commencing at 10.30 am.

MAXIMUM FOR PORT ERIN LADIES
Open age league: Port Erin were on excellent form obtaining a full house at home against Peel in last Friday night’s Crown Green Bowling Ladies Open Age League. Di Benson and Jean Thackrah for Port won to single figures with the closest game being Caroline Whitehead (Port) winning to 19 against Mary Moffatt. Lynda Wilson and Louise Horsfall (Peel) couldn’t quite get over the line with both losing to 16 against Jacqui Elliott and Susan Inch. Marown B won 5-4 at home against Castletown B with Jo Corkill (Marown) just narrowly missing out making it six wins by losing to 20 against Sarah Morgan. Castletown A continue to head the leader board with a 7-2 win at home against Mooragh Park. Janet Monk and Shannon McMullan were the only winners for Mooragh winning to 15 and 6 respectively. Marown A won 5-4 away to Ballaugh with the game of the match being between Barbara Graham (Ballaugh) and Elaine Dewhirst with Barbara eventually winning to 20. Onchan played Douglas at home winning 7-2. Two winners for Douglas were Harley Garrett and Jan West who both won to single figures, as did Libby Andrade and Dee Lewis for Onchan. South Ramsey hosted Port St Mary with South winning 5-4. Result in games could have been the other way round with Jayne Kneen losing to 20 against Judy Kelly.
Over 60s league: Castletown A and Port St Mary B both recorded maximums at home against Finch Hill and Port Erin in Tuesday’s Over 60s league. All games went into double figures apart from Kath Kinley (Castletown) and Roma Ware (Port) who both won to single figures. Mooragh Park A had a good home win against Port St Mary A, although the match finished three all on games, Mooragh won on points. Onchan A had an impressive away win at South Ramsey winning 5-1. Five games were won to single figures apart from Sue Collier (South) who had a real tussle against Caroline Corlett before losing to 20 with the last twenty minutes of the game being played in torrential rain.
Setback For South Ramsey A
In Ellan Vannin Fuels Division One South Ramsey A gave hope to the teams below them, following two below par results this week as despite winning both games they dropped seven points.
Monday nights result was a 3-7 away win over Peel B, with wins for the home team from David Proctor who beat James Teare 21-11, Dave Smith won 21-17 against Peter Collister and Dougie Allan was lying game down at 19-19 against Chas Grills and played a reaching bowl to save the game and count for one. On the last end Grills knocked his opponent in for game when counting one himself. All the wins for South were comfortable with David Bradford showing no ill effects from his recent absence to win 21-6 against Paul ‘Pooky’ Quirk, while Tony Dugdale was a more than capable stand in for Stefan Kelly as he won 21-9 against the ‘real’ Paul Quirk.
On Tuesday South caught up on the fixtures as they hosted Port St Mary A in their rearranged fixture. Ramsey had been only place on the Island that day to get hit with rain and heavy rain at that. This is not to take away from Port St Mary A as they performed well to take four points off the league leaders with Paul Russell winning 21-20 against James Teare with a great last bowl, Paul Skelly was lying game down at 18-20 and struck his opponents bowl off the green, then finished the game on the next end with a double to also win 21-20. Wayne Roberts won 21-18 against Chas Grills, while Tim Williams won a close game with Alan Moore 21-19. For the home team David Bradford recorded another single figure win as he beat Tom Collins 21-2, Peter Collister beat Dan McCabe 21-7, Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly was on his game as he beat Trevor Quayle 21-12, while Glynn Hargraves had to dig in to get over the line 21-18 against Robbie Cooil who came closest to securing a fifth win for Port.
Peel A kept themselves firmly in contention, were just two chalks off recording a 10-0 win, as they won 1-9 away to Noble’s A with Steve Cook beating Peel captain Gary Smith 21-19. Ste Kelly was the biggest winner on the night with his 21-2 win over Martyn Hobson, while his father Barney beat Dave Naughton 21-7. For Noble’s Sam Stannard-Duke came closest to picking up another point as he lost 17-21 to Tom Kelly.
Marown A continue to chase down the teams above them, they were ruthless with their 10-0 home win over Douglas A who were missing their top man Andy Cannell, while John Gelling made his return to the Marown team with a 21-12 win over Gordon Wynne-Smythe. The Crosby men recorded two single figure wins from Juan Killip and Paul Dunn who beat Keith Rise and Kevin Firth respectively. Shaun Seal was highest scorer for the Villa men as he was beaten 15-21 by Dean Kipling.
Onchan A beat Castletown A 7-3 at the Park with just three chalks separating the teams (132-129) as Dean Kinley won 21-1 against Mark Kelly, Bob Clark returned to the side with a 21-14 win over Matthew Quirk who suffered a second successive defeat, while Nathan Hamilton had a solid 21-12 win over Frank Watson. For Onchan Phil Kerruish just edged home 21-20 against Aaron Richardson, Kevin Quirk and Peter Slinger both won 21-12 against Nathan Cooil and Sam Clague respectively, whilst a battle of the Jordan’s was won by Cain as he beat Drewett 21-9, with Reginald Temporaza beating Ian Watson 21-13.
Ballaugh A survival hopes took a hit as they lost 2-8 away to North Ramsey A with Ballaugh’s Richard Hainge taking a brilliant 21-11 win against John Cannan, while team mate Philip Quayle wasn’t far behind with his 21-12 win over Steve Walmsley.
Marown B suffered their third straight defeat away to Port St Mary A as they lost 3-7. Winning for the visitors were Bobby Thorne who beat Dan McCabe 21-13, James Kelly who beat Paul Russell 21-19 and Karl Parker who won 21-16 against Tom Collins. Robbie Cooil was the Port men’s best winner as he won 21-9 against John Kelly, Paul Skelly was pushed hard as he beat Glenn Boland 21-19, while Wayne Roberts, Trevor Quayle and Tim Williams all won 21-10.
In Division Two just three fixtures took place this week as Port Erin A held onto top spot with a hard fought 6-4 home win over Onchan B in a high scoring game (151-141), while second placed Finch Hill A made up some ground with their 9-1 home win over their B Team as Stephen Oates prevented the whitewash with a 21-20 win over Kevin Anderson. Dave McCabe edged ahead in the overall individual merit courtesy of Tony Dugdale stepping into South Ramsey’s A Team.
Douglas B played host to Peel C with the home team taking a 6-4 win, with 11 chalks separating the teams (128-117) as Rob Matthews beat Paul Baker 21-9, with Bob Callow winning 21-4 against Kevin Mort. Mike Ashmole responded for the visitors with his 21-7 win over Andy Foster.
In Division Three Onchan C went top following their 2-8 away win over Port Erin B at Breagle Glen, thanks to three single figure wins from Jamie Clague, Sid McKnight and Lawrence McMullen, while Roger Payne received a walk over. Dennis Maxwell made sure of the extra point that took them to top spot with his 21-20 win over Ian Taylor.
Ballaugh B dropped four points at home to second from bottom Douglas D as they won 6-4, with John Bolton leading the way in the individual merit as he won 21-10 against David Cowley. Recording four impressive wins for the visitors were Nick Firth as he beat John Kneen 21-15, John Ferguson won 21-10 against Mike Buckeridge, while Juan Readshaw and David Caley both won 21-14 against John Looney and Fred Waggett respectively.
Third placed Ballaugh C had a tough time away to Peel D losing two games 20-21 with Peter Corlett and Mark Timsdale just falling short, while team mates Nigel Tebay and Richard Green both recorded impressive 21-8 wins for the visitors.
Noble’s B closed the gap on Castletown C to just five points with their 3-7 away win with Jay Elliott picking up his second win since taking the game up this season with a 21-12 victory over Dylan Marsh.
Rounding off the weeks’ fixtures Marown D took their own impressive 3-7 away win over Douglas C with captain Phil Dunn winning 21-11 over Les Quayle, while Alan Gault beat James Teare 21-8 as the Crosby men sit in a credible fifth place in their ever season.
