‘Geordie’ Wins Ramsey Town Cup to Claim First Singles Open

Mooragh Park was bathed in sunshine on Saturday afternoon when 48 bowlers took part in the Men’s Ramsey Town Cup sponsored by Corkhill and Callow.

In ideal bowling conditions the preliminary rounds were contested and some great games were won or lost with many of them down to the last point.

Making it through to the quarter finals Tom Kelly just pipped Peel team mate Gary Smith 21-19 as did home greener Gary Lenton who beat Tony Carroon (Peel) 21-20. South Ramsey’s Steven Waters and Glynn Hargraves had slightly easier wins and came out on top against Steve Walmsley (North Ramsey) 21-14 and Dave McCabe (Finch Hill 21-15.

The semi-final between Gary Lenton and Steven Waters was very close laying 19-19 after 17 ends. Gary claimed one point on the 18th end but Steven played a fantastic bowl on the 19th end to grab two points and claim his place in the final 21-20. The other semi between Glynn Hargraves and Tom Kelly was equally exciting with both players matching each other end to end and laying 20-20 after 19 ends. Glynn kept his cool winning the final point 21-20.

The final between two of South Ramsey’s most popular players was always going to be exciting. After 14 ends Glynn was playing catch up 12-16 but he played some great shots to overtake Steven on the 21st end leading 20-18 but two points to Steven on the next end left them 20-20 for the final end which was very close, but the final point went to Steven Waters and crowned him the winner of the Men’s Ramsey Town Cup 2021.

The prizes were presented by Tim Pressley Managing Director of Corkhill and Callow Funeral Directors who had kindly sponsored the competition. Thanks were given to the sponsors by Steven Waters who also thanked everyone at North Ramsey for hosting the event and all the work that has been done recently on the green to improve it’s condition.

Marown A Drop Vital Home Points to Peel B

In Ellan Vannin Fuels Division One fixtures were put back to Wednesday evening due to the Bank Holiday on Monday, with some teams making an early start to allow players to get home to watch the big game!

Third placed Marown A hosted Peel B at Crosby, the home team whilst winning 7-3 would have been disappointing to drop three points with Peel’s Dougie Allan beating Matthew 21-18, whilst Brian Lindsay and Gordon Corrin both pipped Paul Kelly and Juan Killip 21-20 respectively. Peel will have been delighted with the three points. For the home team all their wins were comfortable, it looks like Dean Kipling could be a permanent fixture for the second half of the season, he won his game 21-14 against David Proctor.

Second placed Peel A bounced back from last week’s heavy defeat to win 8-2, they had the pleasure of hosting Marown B in the sunset city with Brian Kelly returning to his old stomping ground, he was one of two winners seeing off Tom Kelly 21-19, whilst Glenn Boland inflicted a second straight league defeat on Peter Greenlees with Boland winning 21-11. Winning to single figures for the home side were Gary Smith, Ste Kelly and George Gadsby.

Ballaugh A welcomed league leaders South Ramsey A, with the home team losing 2-8 to the visitors. Winning for the home team were John ‘Shirt’ Keenan who shown his class to recover from a 2-12 deficit against Grandson Stefan Kelly to run out with a 21-15 win, whilst John Maddrell never knows when he is beaten, fighting back from a 15-20 deficit to Chas Grills to win 21-20. Ballaugh could have had a third win on the night with Richard Hainge leading 17-11 against James Teare, who dug in to run out with a 21-18 victory. The visitors had two single figure victories with Dido Kelly winning 21-8 against Tony Quine, whilst Alan Moore continues his return to form playing brilliantly to win 21-6 against Patrick Grant.

Port St Mary A are in somewhat of a false position having played seven of their 11 home league games due to not having floodlights for later on in the season, they held off Castletown A on a fast home green to record a 6-4 win, with Ray Watterson showing he has still got what it takes to compete in division one with a stunning 21-0 victory over Nathan Cooil. At the other end of the spectrum captain Wayne Roberts was on the right side of a 21-20 this week, beating opposing captain Ian Watson. Trevor Quayle returned to winning ways with a 21-7 win against Dean Kinley, whilst Robbie Cooil continues to fly high in the overall merit defeating Aaron Richardson 21-12 to make it eight wins from 10 games. For the visitors Jordan Drewett just edged home 21-20 against Tim Williams, Bob Clark won to single figures against Paul Russell, whilst Sam Clague won 21-14 against Juan Hargraves, with the latter helping out his club playing in just his fourth game of bowls since 2017 and first since 2019.

Two teams suffered 10-0 home defeats, with Noble’s A losing to Douglas A, with Martyn Hobson coming closest to picking up a point for his team, before losing out 18-21 to Gary Conwell, whilst North Ramsey A didn’t make home advantage count with their heavy defeat at the hands of Onchan A.

In Division Two South Ramsey B moved their home match with Finch Hill A to Friday evening with both teams having the opportunity to go top if they recorded a big win. The home team made home advantage count winning 7-3 with Tony Dugdale and Steven Waters both winning to single figures, whilst Ben Dugdale had to work hard to beat Dave Jones 21-19, and Eddie Carlyle just got home 21-20. For the visitors Tony Epifani made sure it wasn’t an even heavier defeat winning 21-19 against Christian Caley, whilst Dave McCabe and John Harris won comfortably against Bryan Corner and George Brew respectively. The result put the South Ramsey men joint top with Castletown B on 56 points.

Port St Mary B and Castletown B played out a true draw 5-5 with both teams winning four games and tying on chalks (140-140) to share the aggregate.

Marown C suffered a 2-8 home defeat to Port Erin A with both teams winning and losing a 21-20, For the Crosby men Jamie Joughin was on the right side of the score, whilst captain Stephen Rundle, was the wrong side losing out to Bernie Durcan.

South Ramsey C came away from the Villa pleased with their 8-2 away win over Douglas B, just missing out on a 10-0 win by just seven chalks, with David Corkill losing 17-21 to Bob Callow, whilst Andy Morgan recovered from a slow start before losing out 18-21 to Steve Gregg.

Onchan B stay in the mix for a long awaited return to division one, following their 8-2 away win against Finch Hill B, with Will Penhallurick continuing to impress at this level, he recorded a 21-15 win over Kevin Stannard.

The Division Three fixtures were unusually held before the top two divisions last week due to the Bank Holiday, with league leaders Ballaugh B not having it all their own way dropping four points with their 6-4 home win over Port Erin B.

Ballaugh B were well beaten 8-2 away to Onchan C with Gordie Moore winning 21-20 against Sid McKnight for the visitors to prevent an even heavier defeat.

Something doesn’t sit quite right with me following the Douglas D result against Douglas C, with the lower ranked D team winning 9-1 this could mean a reshuffling of the teams is required for next season to get the teams right, however the D side is full of new bowlers who appear to be enjoying the game since they took it up. Three single figure victories for the D team, is proof the result was well deserved.

Castletown C suffered a 7-3 home defeat to Peel D who themselves have a number of new bowlers who continue to impress, they have Philip ‘Pip’ Pemberton leading the way for them as he won 21-8 against Byron Mercer to make it eight wins from nine games played, whilst for Castletown John Matheson was one of three home team winners and currently sits top of the individual merit to remain unbeaten this season thanks to his 21-7 win over Andy Morrison.

South Ramsey D slipped to a 4-6 defeat at home to Noble’s B, with players on both teams all reaching double figures, with the visitors taking the aggregate by 10 chalks (129-139).

Dunn & Withers Win Grimshaw Pairs

Marown hosted the ever popular Tynwald Day R & A Grimshaw Pairs Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday with 30 pairs taking part.

At the end of the day it was the Marown duo of Neil Withers and Paul Dunn, who beat the Castletown pairing of Nathan Hamilton and Bob Clark 21-12 in the final to continue their success in doubles competitions this season. The game was well contested early on, with the score 14-12 to Withers and Dunn after 11 ends, it looked like the match could go the distance. From there the home pairing shifted up a few gears to pick up a three, followed by two doubles to ensure the trophy went home with the Crosby men.

Losing out in the semi-finals to the winners were South Ramsey’s Peter Collister and Glynn Hargraves (Castletown) to Withers and Dunn, with the former pair trailing all game before making a mini recovery only to eventually lose out 15-21. The other losing semi-finalists were Andy Kennish (Peel) and James Teare (South Ramsey) who lost 18-21 to Hamilton and Clark.

Losing quarter finalists were home greeners Walter McCarthy and Phil Kelly, Juan Killip and Colin Kelly, South Ramsey’s Tony Hart and Lee Dawson along with 2020 winners Stefan Kelly and Alan Moore (also South Ramsey).

At the conclusion of the competition the presentation was made by competition secretary Philip Kelly, who thanked everyone who had helped with the running of the competition and the Marown Ladies for the refreshments provided throughout the day. The newly crowned Manx Champion was then introduced to present the prizes.

Home Win Has Kelly in ‘Seventh’ Heaven

Marown Bowling Club hosted this year’s Canada Life International sponsored Manx Championship with the competition once again played over two weekends. The competition attracted 91 entries – the highest entry seen the 1980’s, with the qualifying day held last Sunday whittling the field down to 32 for finals day. At the start of the day there were five previous winners in the field, however four of them fell before the quarter finals to leave the six time champion Colin Kelly as clear favourite on his home green. There was an excellent crowd who came to support their club mates, which added to the great atmosphere.

Last 16 Results

Phil Kerruish 20-21 Dean Kinley
Stevie Kelly 17-21 Bob Clark
Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly 21-9 Gary Smith
Matthew Quirk 21-12 Robert Monk

Neil Withers 13-21 Colin Kelly
Stevie Rundle 12-21 Trevor Quayle
Jordan Cain 21-17 Peter Collister
Walter McCarthy 21-19 Jamie Clague

In the quarter finals Dean Kinley (Castletown), who had put out last year’s champion Paul Dunn 21-7 in his first game of the day had his challenge ended by teammate Bob Clark losing 16-21, whilst Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly (Peel) recovered from a poor start only to lose out 18-21 to Onchan’s Matthew Quirk. Home favourite Colin Kelly had to battle hard to beat Port St Mary’s Trevor Quayle 21-17, whilst Marown C Team player Walter McCarthy performed brilliantly to claim a nerve-wracking 21-20 victory over Jordan Cain (Onchan), playing a brilliant last bowl to progress to the semi-final.

The semi-finals had Kelly up against McCarthy, with Kelly wasting no time in booking his place in the final, thanks to a 21-6 win over his club mate. In the other semi Clark just about kept his nose in front for most of the game against Quirk, leading 15-10, then 18-11 and 19-13 only for Quirk to take a double, a single and another double to close the deficit to just one chalk at 18-19. Clark then made sure of his place in the final with a double on the last end to take a deserved 21-18 win in a good quality contest.

The final started with Kelly the hot favourite on his own green, however Clark had been the favourite from those never to have won the Manx Championship previously to get their name on the trophy, has a good record in head to heads against Kelly and is unflappable under pressure. Both players preferred to play a fair distance, with Kelly leading 9-6 after 12 ends with two doubles from Clark thanks to Kelly uncharacteristically putting both bowls in the ditch in the same corner on two separate occasions. From there the final was thrilling to watch, with Clark having to pull out some great bowls on a number of occasions to stay in touch with Kelly.

One of the defining moments of the game came on the 26th end with Kelly jumping in on Clark’s lead to play a good first bowl with the score 16-15 to the former. With his second bowl Clark ran into the back of Kelly’s bowl and Clark probably felt confident he would only be one down, however Kelly had other ideas, sending his bowl on the other peg to flick off his own bowl then trail the jack to make a brilliant two and increase his lead to 18-15. Kelly then picked up a single on the next end thanks to a great second bowl to play Clark out, only to then have a good lead beaten by another fantastic bowl from Clark to stay in the game at 16-19 to keep the pressure firmly on. On the following end Clark played his lead eight inches to the side of the jack, only for Kelly to play him out once again to lead 20-16. On the final end Kelly played a good lead, with Clark’s bowl just clipping Kelly’s bowl and running through. With his final bowl Clark changed his peg to play a reaching bowl, cruelly missing everything to give Kelly a 21-16 victory in a thrilling final for the spectators. The standard of bowling over distance was of an excellent standard from both players, this final will be remembered for a long time.

The presentation was made by competition committee officer Steve Moore, who introduced Daniel Pownall from the sponsors Canada Life International to present the prizes. Thanks were given to Marown for hosting the event, the greenkeepers for preparing the green, the ladies for the refreshments provided, and all the club members who assisted with the measuring & stewarding throughout. In his speech Kelly was understandably emotional upon claiming his first Manx Championship win on his own green, seventh title overall and this was the fourth different decade that he has won the Manx Championship, with this one being watched by his wife Margaret, children Tom and Kevin and parents Juan and Isabel, it was clear to see how much it meant to him. Both finalists are now eligible to play in the Senior Merit Trophy at Heaton Park BC in Manchester on Saturday 24th July.

Hargraves Wins Ken Williamson Memorial Trophy

Saturday afternoon saw Onchan host the Ken Williamson Memorial Trophy men’s singles held in memory of Hall of Famer, Ken Williamson with 48 players entering the competition.

Play commenced in breezy conditions on a slightly heavy green following Friday’s rain. The 16 preliminary round games went pretty much to form with no major shocks. In the first round, every player managed to achieve double figures. Arguably, the shock of the games came when Walter McCarthy (Marown) beat home A team captain Peter Slinger 21-20.

Wayne Roberts won his second round derby game against Port St Mary teammate Trevor Quayle, whilst Colin Kelly (Marown) did similar to McCarthy. David Bradford (South Ramsey) took two on the final end against Neil Withers (Marown) to secure a 21-20 win. Quietly working their way through the round were Bob Clark (Castletown) & Glynn Hargraves (South Ramsey). Local hero Kevin Quirk, winner of the trophy for the previous three years, succumbed to Paul Dunn (Marown) ending hopes of an Onchan victor. Making up the final eight were slight outsiders James Teare (South Ramsey) & Paul ‘Pooky’ Quirk (Peel).

By the time the quarter finals commenced, the sun had made an appearance providing a slightly faster green for the contestants. Dunn, Kelly & Clark brushed aside Quirk, Roberts & Teare whilst Hargraves won the battle of the South Ramsey ‘blue boys’ against Bradford taking four from the last three ends to win 21-17.

Starting together, the semi-finals were made up of Kelly versus Clark, with Hargraves up against Dunn. Each game was closely fought with only one two in the first 11 ends of each match. From 14-14 after 14 ends, Kelly began to pull ahead eventually running out 21-16 against Clark. In the other semi Hargraves was 15-17 down after 20 ends, however Hargraves dug in to overcome Dunn 21-18. The standard of bowling in each game was excellent & a joy to watch.

The final saw Hargraves race into a 14-7 lead after seven ends before Kelly took three consecutive doubles. After 15 ends the scores were tied at 17-17. Kelly was leading 19-17 at the 17th end. A close measure gave Hargraves the jack from which he never looked back running out 21-19.

Presenting the trophy & awards was Mike Thomas, Onchan Chairman. Thanks were given to Ken Williamson’s family for continuing to generously support the competition. Also thanked were the ladies for organising the raffle & catering, the measurers, markers, stewards & anyone who had contributed to another successful day’s bowling. In his speech Hargraves thanked Onchan for organising the day’s proceedings. This was the first time he had won the competition & admitted to being old enough to remember Ken in his playing days!

Two On The Trot For Withers & Dunn

Peel hosted the Lancaster Cup men’s doubles on a fine Saturday afternoon on a vastly improved playing surface with 30 pairs taking part.

At the end of the competition it was the Marown duo of Paul Dunn and Neil Withers (+3) who carried on their good run of form seeing off the Douglas pairing of Paul Cowley and Bob Callow (+8) who had performed brilliantly throughout the entire day to reach the final and can be proud of their efforts with Cowley leading well at the front and Callow pulling out some great bowls at the back, however the Marown pairs quality came through with some good lead bowls and strikes which came off recovering from a 3-10 deficit to ensure they took a 21-15 victory in the final. The winning pair received the Lancaster Cup and shared the £200 first prize, whilst the runners up could console themselves with £100 between them.

Losing out in the semis to the winners were the heavily fancied Stefan Kelly (South Ramsey) and Bob Clark (Castletown) with the score tied at 10-10 before eventually losing out 13-21, whilst in the other semi it was the end of the challenge from Dave McCabe (Finch Hill) and Nathan Cooil (Castletown) to Cowley and Callow 10-21.

Falling at the quarter final stages were last weeks Mooragh Park winners Wayne Roberts and Trevor Quayle (Port St Mary) 19-21 to McCabe and Cooil, home pair Andrew Cover and David Proctor lost 20-21 to Cowley and Callow, whilst another home pairing Philip ‘Pip’ Pemberton and Paul ‘Pooky’ Quirk lost 17-21 to Dunn and Withers. Onchan men Neil Dunwell and Mike Thomas were defeated 16-21 by Kelly and Clark.

The presentation was made by Peel Bowling Club chairman Dougie Allan, who thanked the sponsor David Lancaster, the team who ran the competition and all the club members who had helped throughout the day.

Proctor and Kelly Win Nobles Cup

On Saturday 28th July the Nobles Cup was held by Nobles Bowling Club with the competition attracting an entry of 24 pairs.

The competition started under damp conditions which worsened during the afternoon but despite this there was a high standard of bowling during the afternoon.

Losing in the Quarter finals were Matthew Quirk & Jordan Cain, Arnie Withers & Gary Weightman, Matthew Keggen & Thomas Keggen, Paul Quirk & Michael Kavanagh

First to book their place in the final was Alan Moore and Austin Hart (both South Ramsey) who won comfortably 21-7 against the Peel Sunset pairing of Dave Smith and Mike Ashmole.

During the second semi-final the conditions changed with the steady rain turning torrential.  Peel Sunset’s Stevie Kelly and David Proctor managed to come through the game after a close battle 21-18 against Glynn Hargraves and Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly (both South Ramsey)

As the final got underway the green started to flood adding to the already tricky bowling conditions.  Players were being forced to ‘cob’ their bowls, throwing them at waist height to jump the puddles.  Stevie and David mastered the conditions the best running out to win 21-16 in the final.

The presentation was made by John Ruscoe on behalf of Nobles and thanked the members of the club who had assisted all day in running the competition as well as the ladies who provided excellent refreshments

Hat-trick for Kennish

There was a bumper entry of 65 in this years Canada Life International sponsored Manx Championship held at Port St Mary on Saturday with the green running well and proving difficult to master.

The game of the first round on paper had 2017 champion John Kennish taking on Jordan Cain (Onchan). After a shaky start by both players Kennish pulled away to take a big lead to go 20-7 up before Cain replied with an eight point run to get back to 15-20 and was lying one until Kennish took out Cain’s counting bowl to win 21-15.

Home greener Paul Skelly had his work cut out to beat Jimmy Sansom 21-18 to book his place in the second round.

Peel man Gary Smith performed well to dispose of two South Ramsey players defeating Stefan Kelly 21-10 and Glynn Hargraves 21-16 to earn his place in the finals day.

Saturday’s theme seemed to be a tale of comebacks with Sam Clague (Castletown) holding a huge lead on Frank Watson (Peel) before letting it slip losing 21-19 to show the importance of having the jack on a tricky green.

Glenn Boland (Noble’s) was 11-2 down against Dave McCabe (Port Erin) then took 18 consecutive points to go 20-11 up. McCabe got two more points then Boland finished the game off taking a 21-13 victory.

In the second round Peel captain Stevie Kelly was 13-3, 14-7 and then 18-11 up on Onchan captain Peter Slinger who doesn’t know when he is beaten with Slinger just managing to earn his place in the last 16 with a 21-20 win.

Neil Withers (Marown) was 13-18 down to Stuart Garrett (Douglas) to then take four consecutive doubles to win 21-18. John Kennish was pushed even harder in his second game against Frank Watson with a similar story to the first game in that Kennish had a big lead of 17-8 before Watson started to claw his way back into the game. Kennish got over the line 21-17 in the end.

Dan McCabe (Port St Mary) had a fantastic 21-6 win over Tommy McMeiken (Peel). Home greener Wayne Roberts was another victim of letting a lead slip after going 20-16 up before losing out 20-21 to Rob Monk.

David Proctor performed well despite getting a walkover in the first round to beat Peel team mate Tom Kelly to win 21-9 to book his place in finals day.

Last 16 Line Up

Paul Skelly v Gary Smith
Peter Slinger v Neil Withers
Dan McCabe v John Kennish
Reginald Temporaza v David Bradford

David Proctor v Matthew Keggen
Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly v Rob Monk
Trevor Quayle v Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly
Colin Kelly v Paul Dunn

Paul Skelly got the action underway on Sunday in front of a good turnout for finals day and kept the home crowds dream of a home greener victory alive by ending the challenge of Gary Smith with a 21-13 win. Peter Slinger had to dig in once again to see off Neil Withers with a hard fought 21-18 victory. Port St Mary man Dan McCabe started well with John Kennish, then Kennish found his groove to book his quarter final spot with a 21-10 win. Noble’s Reg Temporaza’s challenge was ended by David Bradford (South Ramsey) who won comfortably 21-9.

In the second half of games Matthew Keggen (Marown) also had a comfortable win over David Proctor, whilst Onchan’s Rob Monk performed brilliantly to end the challenge of Dave ‘Barney’ Kelly for another year also winning 21-9. Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly played as well as anyone to see off Port St Mary captain Trevor Quayle with a 21-13 win. In the final game it was two Marown team mates pitted against each other with Colin Kelly holding off Paul Dunn with a 21-12 win.

In the first quarter final Paul Skelly got the applause of the home crowd with a 21-20 win over Peter Slinger after letting an 18-13 lead slip to book his place in the semi-final thanks to a good two to finish on the last end.

In the second quarter final it was another battle between team mates with John Kennish taking on his men’s doubles partner David Bradford with Bradford 13-3, 15-8 and 19-15 up with Kennish clawing his way back constantly throughout the game with Kennish getting over the line thanks to a double and four singles to win 21-19.

In the third quarter final Rob Monk took on Matthew Keggen with Monk taking a commanding 19-13 lead with Keggen chipping away at the lead to get back to 18-20 before Monk played a good first bowl to end Keggen’s hopes of a win on his former home green.

In the last quarter final Dido Kelly made a good start to go 11-4 up on Colin Kelly with Dido not sending his jack far enough which allowed Colin the opportunity to set the mark in the corners, which he took full advantage of, to then take a 14-13 lead. Dido responded with a double to re-take the lead 15-14. Colin then managed to see the game out taking a 21-15 win to book his place in the semi-final.

In the first semi-final John Kennish faced local favourite Paul Skelly with Kennish making a strong start going 15-3 up, before seeing the game out to win 21-13.

In the other semi-final Rob Monk started well taking a 7-2 lead with Colin Kelly responding with 12 consecutive points to take a 14-7 lead before Monk took a single and a double. Kelly responded with another run to book his place in the final with a 21-10 win.

The final started with a rematch from 2016 between the top two ranked players on the Island with Kennish making an assured start going 7-0 and then 16-3 up. Kelly started to work his way back into the game pulling the score back to 8-16 and then 11-17. Kennish then took three singles to stand just one point away from victory. Kelly scored two singles to hold Kennish off and then led a good lead before Kennish tapped the jack to lie one for game. Kelly played his last bowl and just missed taking out the counting bowl to hand Kennish his third successive Manx Championship and 11th in total to further etch his name into the history books.

Thanks must go to Port St Mary for the condition of the green, the excellent catering and club members who were on hand to help throughout the weekend.

South Ramsey Retain Division One

South Ramsey A retained the Division One title by beating Port St Mary A 6-4. South have been a dominant force all season and fully deserve to win back to back trophies and will look forward to competing in the 2018 World Club Challenge and going for a hattrick of wins next season.

Marown A pushed hard in the second half of the season to chase down South Ramsey but despite their best efforts settle for second place finishing eight points behind the champions.

Onchan A had already guaranteed third position but Douglas A, Port St Mary A and Peel Sunset A were all fighting for fourth position.

Peel slipped to a 8-2 defeat away to Onchan A leaving them to finish sixth. Douglas A picked up a 8-2 win over North Ramsey A but crucially Port St Mary A picked up four points in their defeat at South Ramsey A pipping Douglas by a single point to claim fourth position.

Castletown B finish bottom following their 8-2 loss at Marown A but Ballaugh A, Douglas B or Port Erin A could still finish in the bottom two. Douglas B sat out Wednesday having already completed all their matches so were sweating on the results from their relegation rivals.

Port Erin A who with only a few games to go were rock bottom found good form in their final few matches finishing the season off by defeating South Ramsey B 7-3 and keeping them in the top flight.

That left Ballaugh A, they went to Castletown A knowing they needed three points to jump Douglas B and save their season. On the night they lost two games 21-18 and another 21-17 and could only manage two wins losing 8-2 on the night and leaving them with Castletown B at the bottom.

Colin Kelly collected the division one merit on the final day of the season with David Bradford finishing second and Trevor Quayle third.

Marown B had already confirmed themselves as Champions and finished the season with a 5-5 draw at Peel Sunset B. Onchan B finished seven points behind the men from Crosby with Nobles B third and a further 20 points back.

Nobles B have enjoyed much success this season incredibly finishing nine points ahead of their A team. In their final matches Nobles B went down 7-3 away to Port St Mary B and Nobles A defeated Port Erin B 9-1.

Douglas C finish bottom along with Onchan C.

The division two merit came right down to the wire and Steve Crampton finished top of the shop signing his season off with a 21-9 victory. Kerry ‘Bod’ Boland finished second.

Division three had a great finale with Ballaugh C leading the division by two points ahead of Peel Sunset C. With both teams having one hand on the trophy the fixture list happened to throw them together on the last night of the season.

Ballaugh travelled to Sunset City and the match was close, only separated by eight chalks but it was Peel who won 7-3 and took the third division trophy.

The division three merit was also just as close, Dave Smith led the way but three other people were waiting to pounce should he have lost. Away at Ballaugh B Dave won 21-7 and collected the merit in only his second season of league bowls.

So the curtain has fallen on another fantastic season of league bowls. We thank our Sponsors Ellan Vannin Fuels for their continued support along with all the people behind the scenes that help with the running of the league.

Friends Provident Men’s Doubles

An Entry of 32 players (16 pairs) played at Port St Mary Bowling Club.

The 32 players were split into 2 groups, A and B, based on the league merit tables and which league the individuals play in, with group A being mostly 1st division bowlers.

One player was drawn from each group to make up the teams. This made for many close matches in every round of the competition, including the final which was won 21 – 20 by Jordan Cain & Nathan Hamilton against James Teare & Glenn Boland.

Losing at the semi-final stages were Alan Moore & Tom Collins and Glynn Hargraves & Derek Kneen.

With the weather also behaving itself, a very enjoyable afternoon was had by all.

At the Presentation, the President Of P.S.M. Bowling Club Ken Karran thanked the sponsors Friends Provident, the greenkeeper Ewan Cooil, the Ladies catering team, and everyone else that helped on the day.

Ken Karran then introduced Katy Williams of Friends Provident to present the prizes.

This open was added to this season’s schedule after some extra dates became available. After a lot of good feedback on the day from the players and spectators it is hoped that event will go ahead again next season.
