Nicci Cain wins Hands Non Winners Ladies Singles

The first Ladies Association competition of the 2024 season took place today at Port Erin green, hosted by Port St Mary. With an entry of 15 Ladies, the quarter final stages were very close matches Nicci Cain (Port St Mary) overcame youngster Aalish Moore 21-14, Joy Stephens (Castletown) secured her place into the semi-final 21-18 against Jo Corkill (Peel Sunset). Alison Stockham played her home green well to take a 21-15 win over Tracy Moore (Castletown). The final spot was Charlotte Clark (Marown) 21-15 Michelle Cubbon (Ballaugh).

The semi-finals were extremely close games, with Cain and Stephens having a very competitive game. Both players were leading well and at just 8 ends in were level on 11-11 the game stayed within 2 points and at end 21 was 19-19. Cain scored two singles to take the game 21-19.

The other semi-final was Clark against Stockham, this was a game of two halves with Clark running away with a 12-6 lead. Stockham closed the gap midway to 12-15. Securing a 2 and a 1 Clark edged away to 18-12. But scoring a 1 on the next end Stockham changed the length and took Clark in the corner where she took the win 21-18.

As Port St Mary play their games at Port Erin the final was a home green clash with Cain versus Stockham. Cain continued her day of leading well and never gave Stockham easy ends to win, but with some good bowling by both players Nicci Cain was full of smiles to win her first singles competition 21-14. The Ladies Association presented the prizes and thanked Port St Mary for hosting.

Castletown A Compete at 2023 UK Club Championships

After overcoming cancelled travel arrangements Castletown Ladies managed to eventually play in the 2023 UK Club Championships at the weekend. Unfortunately the competition was not fully supported and there were four groups of just three teams with Castletown drawn with Maggies, the Warwick and Worcester champions, and also the championship favourites, and holders, Wrockwardine Wood from Shropshire. In the opening round-robin game Maggies went into an early chalks lead and from the first four blocks off only Tracy Moore had won for the IOM champions following an excellent 15-8 win. However a barnstorming second half saw the match completely turn a full circle as Hilary Kermode and Hannah Drewett both came off with 15-10 wins while in a nail biting finish Stella Watterson played superb bowls to win 15-5 giving Castletown an extremely narrow one chalk victory. It was never going to be easy against the Shropshire champions in the second game though with friendships being maintained with the many IOM Festival bowlers in their ranks. The Island team managed one win in each half with Anne Oates winning 15-5 against Louise Cotton and Kim Foy beating Barbara Hughes to 9. However in the end Castletown succumbed to a 20 chalk defeat though at least they had the satisfaction of losing to the team that went on to retain their trophy.

Moore Festival Titles for Jenny

In the Ladies main event local bowler Jenny Moore (South Ramsey) took on Michelle Mackay (Lindal BC) in the final. It proved to be a great week for Jenny as she picked up her third festival title following her June 2016 and September 2021 successes.

In the final the early part of the game saw Mackay lead 9-6, with Moore levelling the game up at 9-9, then 10-10. On the next end with Moore counting for one the watching crowd expected a reaching bowl, however it fell short to put Moore in the lead for the first time in the game at 11-10. It went level at 11 for the third time in the game the following end, this proved to be the last point picked up by Mackay with the South Ramsey player then moving through the gears on a longer mark picking up the final seven ends alternating the first five ends with singles and doubles with a great performance to lead 19-11, before going on to see the game out with two good singles to seal a fully deserved 21-11 victory.

In addition to taking her first win and the winners’ cheque for £1,250 Jenny received the Blanche Kaye Trophy for the furthest Manx Lady, while Michelle took the runners up prize for £625.

In the semi-finals Moore booked her place in the final with a comfortable 21-14 win over Sharon Rigden (Bretherton) having built up a 15-8 lead, Rigden fought back to 13-16, only for Moore to see the game out with two doubles and a single, while Mackay took on local bowler Louise Tebay (Ballaugh) who despite only taking up the game in 2021 the latter just lost out 20-21 in a thrilling finish to the game with Tebay doing all she could to reach the final counting one for game. With her last bowl Mackay was inside the jack land with the pace of the bowl holding it to pick up the jack to win 21-20 to go through to the final.

Moore started her day with a 21-16 win over Lynda Cadamy (Marown), whilst Rigden had a good battle with Shavorne Osborne (Trench BC) with the former winning 21-18. Mackay started her day beating last year’s losing finalist Sarah Weaver (Wrockwardine Wood) with a 21-13, whilst Tebay also had a comfortable 21-12 win over Lisa Pessall (Trench BC).

The question will be how many festival titles Moore will pick up, with age most definitely on her side, as Moore reached finals day with comprehensive victories in the last 32, beating both players to single figures with a 21-9 victory over Mandy Pagett (Woodfield), then went on to beat Marilyn Kelly-Walley (Stretton Anglesey) 21-7 to book her place in Finals day.
