Cu-Plas Ladies’ Doubles

There was an entry of 21 pairs for the ladies’ doubles sponsored by Cu-Plas and played at Nobles’ number 2 green on Sunday 30 April. Although the rain stayed away the strong winds made it very cold particularly in the latter stages when the sun decided to go to bed.

There were some entertaining games with a lot of excellent bowling.

Quarter-finals: Alison Keggen and Debbie Leece 21, Philippa Taylor and Joyce Ogden 8; Fiona Kennish and Jenny Moore 21, Clare Cooper and Rebecca Teare 18; Kath Kinley and Marie Ashurst 21, Ann Hollingworth and Barbara Young 16; Lynda Cadamy and Mary Alderson 21, Gill Morgan and Julie Reilly 9.

In the semi-finals Jenny and Fiona were too strong for Alison and Debbie, coming through 21-8, while Kath and Marie put up greater resistance against Lynda and Mary before going down 15-21.

The first half of the final was tense and evenly matched, standing at 12-12 after nine ends. Fiona and Jenny won the next three ends, scoring two singles and a three to give them a five point lead. Despite scoring a single on the next end, Mary and Lynda had to concede defeat when their opponents won the next two ends, to record a winning score of 21-13.

The presentation was made by club chairman, Clare Cooper, who thanked Cu-Plas for their sponsorship and support. She also thanked those who had helped in the smooth running of the afternoon, measuring, stewarding and running the sheet. Further thanks went to those who had provided the magnificent refreshments, which were particularly welcome on such a cold afternoon.

Janet Reclaims Top Lady

The morning weather did not bode well for the Top Lady Invitational at Port Erin on Saturday 29 April, as players made their way south through heavy rain. However, by start of play, the weather cleared giving a sunny and at time warm afternoon with players able to strip down to their shirts ! A touch of drizzle late on did not detract from the event.

In a high quality field there were some close, and some not so close, matches in the early rounds and by the quarter-finals the cream had risen to the top.

Quarter-finals: Ann Hollingworth 18, Rosie Winckle 21; Janet Monk 21, Joyce Kelly 13; Lynda Cadamy 21, Helen Martin 13; Lyn Bolton 17, Margaret Tasker 21.

In the early rounds Janet had cut a swathe through the Peel players with Joyce Kelly being the only one to reach double figures against her. In the semi-final she moved inland to Marown to tackle Rosie Winckle who, like the two other Peel players, had no answer to her accuracy on her corner-to-corner mark.

The other semi-final was much closer affair with Margaret taking an early 7-1 lead before Lynda responded to level at 11-11. After 25 ends Lynda led 19-17, but her opponent took the next four ends to run out the winner 21-19.

Semi-finals: Rosie Wickle 6, Janet Monk 21; Lynda Cadamy 19, Margaret Tasker 21.

In the final it was Janet who made the early running, racing to 14-5, then 18-8. Margaret’s fighting spirit came to the fore as she pulled back to15-19, but it was too little too late as Janet took the next two ends and the title at the end of a fascinating battle. Janet reclaims the title she last won in 2010 and joins Helen Martin, Chris Price on 3 wins with Jenny Moore holding the outright record at 4.

Final: Janet Monk 21, Margaret Tasker 15

The Presentation was made by Association president, Rosie Winckle, who thanked Port Erin For the use of their green, and the club men for the measuring and the ladies for the catering. She also thanked Elaine and Heather for their work running the sheet

Lyn Bolton Wins Pearl Kaighin Ladies’ Singles

The sun shone on the first ladies’ singles open of the season played at Ballaugh for the Pearl Kaighin Trophy, as a field of 32 gathered to do battle. The green was running well, if a little heavier than it’s well mown appearance would suggest.

Even in the early stages there were some close matches and as the afternoon progressed the quality of the bowling was apparent.

The closest match in the quarter-finals was a family affair with Shelley Kennish coming through 21-20 against Elaine Moore.

Quarter-finals: Janet Monk 21, Kim Hargraves 9; Shelley Kennish 21, Elaine Moore 20; Lyn Bolton 21, Mavis Franks 13; Helen Martin 21, Ann Hollingworth 14.

This set up two North Ramsey v South Ramsey semi-finals.

In the first semi-final Janet Monk came through a tough battle against Shelley, while in the other a combination of Lyn’s good play and Helen “running out of steam” saw the South Ramsey player go through.

Semi-finals: Janet Monk 21, Shelley Kennish 16; Lyn Bolton 21, Helen Martin 9.

Janet had the better start in the final, being 13-7 up after six ends. The next few ends were shared taking Janet to 15-10 at which point Lyn got the bit between her teeth losing only two more ends before running out the winner 21-17.

Richard Faragher thanked those who had stayed to the end, and was pleased that the weather had held fair to the end, before introducing sponsor, Bernard Kaighin, to present his mother’s trophy.

Lyn thanked the Ballaugh club and all those who had helped during the afternoon.

Ladies’ British Merit Qualifier

There was a field of 13 for the British Crown Green Merit Qualifier played at Finch Hill on Sunday 16 April. The afternoon started in fine weather and it was hoped that the early morning heavy rain had passed and gone. However things went downhill weatherwise at the semi-final stage.

The two semi-finals could not have been more different, as Fiona Kennish, who had played so well in her previous game, could not come to grips with either the weather or her opponent, while in the other, Helen Martin pegged back a deficit of 9-18 to come through and win 21 -20.

Semi-finals: Lyn Bolton 21, Fiona Kennish 3; Helen Martin 21, Elaine Moore 20.

Lyn made the better start in the final, leading 9-2 after ten ends, at which point Helen took six of the next seven ends to level at 10-10. The points were shared to 13 across when Lyn, with a run of four ends, stretched to a 20-13 lead, before Helen closed to 18-20 after 30 ends. A very tense final went to Lyn with a single on the next end, giving her the win 21-18.

Lyn will now represent the island at the Individual Merit competition at the Leyland Fox Lane Sports Club on Saturday 8 July.

Association president, Rosie Winckle, thanked Finch Hill bowling club for the use of their facilities and for providing the refreshments. She also thanked all those who had helped in any way with the smooth running of the afternoon.

Ladies’ Result Cards

Captains are reminded that match results are to be sent to Matthew via phone, text or e-mail, and the cards to be posted to me immediately after the match. The extra time taken when we cannot enter the results in one sitting is frustrating and could result in a delay in getting them on to the web-site.

Can I also issue my usual instructions on filling in the result cards :

1. Please fill in the names of the two teams at the top of the card. I have already received one card in which this was not done !!

2. Please put in the players full name, not an initial. Also ensure that all the names are on the card.

3. Put in the scores of all games played – in the rush at the end of a match the score for the final game played is often left out.

4. Use capital letters.

5. Both captains should sign the card. – this is not a formality, but says that you both agree that the information on the card re players names and scores, and final totals are correct. Please check that they are before signing.

Hands Trophy

There was a small, but select, field gathered at Castletown for the Hands “Non-winners” Trophy which had been held over from the end of last year.

On a sunny afternoon there were some very close matches and some very good bowling on display.

Barbara Young started with a bye, but then went all the way with Rita Callister coming through 21-20. She had a further tough battle with Margaret Tasker in the semi-final, booking her place in the final with another score of 21-20.

In the other half of the draw Paula Firth seemed in control in all three matches on her way to the final, although none of them was easy – 21-13 against Lisa Boland, 21-17 against Celia Joughin and another tough 21-15 against Mary Alderson.

In the final her battles in earlier rounds took their toll on Barbara allowing a determined Paula to come through 21-9 to take the trophy for the fifth time. Does this, in her own words, make her the greatest duffer of all time ?

The presentation was made by Association president, Rosie Winckle, who thanked the Castletown club for the use of the green and their members for their efforts in measuring and stewarding during the afternoon.

Looking forward to 2017

Last season was dominated by teams from the south of the island, with Port St Mary looking unassailable in both leagues, Castletown winning the Jean Kelly team handicap and Port Erin the JMS Shield.

At the end of the season it looked as though Onchan would be unable to field a team in the night league for this year, but everyone is delighted to hear that they have been able to put a team together.

Rumours abound of players changing clubs so it will be interesting to see who is playing where when the season gets under way and how this affects the league dynamics. Also, of course, we will find out who has had their “60<span style=”font-size: small”>th</span>. Birthday” during the winter !

In the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored night league, the main threat to Port St Mary would appear to come from Castletown and South Ramsey who were very closely matched in the battle for second and third in the last campaign. There are rumours of comings and goings for the champions – it will be interesting to see what effect the changes have.

Further down the table there are a block of teams, led by Noble’s, who are always evenly matched – could on of them come out of the pack and cause an upset ?

Marown should be strengthened by their imports, and Mooragh Park will be improving each year as players gain more experience. It waits to be seen which players Onchan will have, but it is good to see them still there.

The Trend sponsored Over 60’s league saw Port St Mary A almost in a league of their own, but the closely matched pack, Peel, Castletown, Port Erin and Onchan, in the minor places may contain a surprise package In the nether regions of the table, Breagle have the ability to cause an upset in any match, while the Mooragh Park team players have an extra year’s experience under their belts.

With only six players in a team, a lot will depend on which teams benefit from members’ relevant birthdays since September

Roberts & Ryan Win September Festival

Welsh wizard Leighton Roberts (Cunliffe) picked up his first ever Isle of Man Main Men’s Bowls Festival title last week at the second time of asking.

After falling at the final hurdle in June last year, Roberts was in no mood to let this final slip through his fingers against former Champion, and festival stalwart, Martin Gilpin (Kendal Vic).

That said he didn’t have things his own way and despite leading 14-10 found himself level at 15-15 and then again at 17-17 as Gilpin, the master tactician from Cumbria, tried to use all his experience to outfox the youngster and add another festival title to his long list of honours.

Conditions on finals day deteriorated with every bowl sent, but not even the foul weather could stop Roberts who dug deep, and when some thought he might falter due to nerves he found the composure of a true champion. as he managed to seal the win 21-18.

Champion Roberts booked his final birth thanks to a 21-12 win over James Wilcox (Crossgates) and a nail biting 21-20 win over Neil Slattery (Nimble Nook), in which he came from behind with some brilliant bowls to edge to victory.

Gilpin was on song in the semi-finals where he eliminated bookies favourite, close friend and Kendal Vic stable mate Ian Nicholson 21-15 after starting the day with a 21-9 win over Graham Higgins (Lower Hopton).

Marown’s Colin Kelly was the furthest local in the men’s main competition losing out in the last eight to James Wilcox. It was a much better showing for Manxmen in general as in June they failed to get a single player to the last 32 of the competition and this time around eight of our own made it to the same stage.

Tracy Ryan (Meole Brace) bagged the ladies title with a dominant finals day display which never really saw her threatened. She lifted the trophy after a 21-16 final victory over Olwen Edwards (Llanfair Pwll).

Ryan was control from the off and after going 11-6 up managed to ensure Edwards never closed the gap moving to 19-14 up before the latter rallied but could never get back on terms.

Janet Monk (Mooragh Park) was the furthest local lady in the competition as she did exceptionally well to make the semi-finals before going down to Ryan 21-10.
Monk wasn’t the only Manx player in finals day and was in good company as Lyn Bolton and Elaine Moore (both South Ramsey) made the last eight. In fact Monk played Bolton winning 21-14 to make the semis whilst Moore fell 21-18 after a highly entertaining affair against Carleen Doody-Millington (Meole Brace).

Thursday morning saw the final stages of the Mens and Ladies Tourism Competitions and there was some good local presence and some brilliant performances as both Glynn Hargraves and Christine Price made it to the finals of their respective competitions.

Hargraves eventually lost out 21-11 to Ian Nicholson after battling hard in his two previous matches, beating Paul Beer (Meole Brace) 21-20 in his first match of the morning and David Halstead (Kirkham) 21-16 next time out. It was a good week for Glynn who showed some of his best form throughout the week, as he also made the last 32 of the main competition and he should be very proud of his efforts.

South Ramsey team mate John Kennish was also in fine fettle to make the last eight before being eliminated by eventual winner Ian Nicholson 21-16 in the quarter-finals.
It was a similar story for Price who won well in her first two games before going down after a fight 21-17 to Sarah Fox (Woodlands Park). In her semi-final she beat Julie Pearce (Meole Brace) 21-12 after taking down Doody-Millington 21-15 in the quarters. Again Christine should be really proud of her efforts as she really did give a great showing in the competition.

In the Men’s consolation competition Peter Yates (Kirkham) took the win with a 21-15 result over Merseyside’s Danny Barwise. Hazel Borrowdale (Nether Field) won the ladies competition with a win by the same score-line over Joyce Jones (Syke BC)

The last chance Mixed Final saw one of the main competitions pre-tournament favourites Chris Slater (Colwyn Bay Legion) produce a good display to beat Martin Middleton (Meole Brace) 21-14.

The final singles competition of the week, the visit.com flyer, saw two locals battling out with Alec Taylor (Peel Sunset) handling the conditions better to defeat Edward Carlyle 7-0. Congratulations to Alex on his win.

As always the doubles competitions provided a lot of entertainment and another chance of success for visiting and local bowlers alike. The main open doubles was won by Dave & Ben Phillips (Lloyd Hotel) who were on song winning 11-2 against Leighton Roberts & Nick Hughes (Cunliffe).

In the men’s event Bob Whyatt & Steve Baskerville took the title with an 11-1 victory over Mel Hobson & Andrew Moore. Jimmy Samson (Douglas) was the furthest of the locals losing out with visitor Stuart Marshall 11-8 to the eventual winners at the semi final stage.

In the ladies competition there was a Manx victor as June festival champion Jenny Moore (South Ramsey) took the crown with Patricia Lonsdale (Morecambe Bay Mixed) as they beat Dawn Bray and Janet Cropper 11-5.

Elaine Moore just missed out on a mixed doubles win as her and partner Tony Parsons went down 9-5 to Paul Drabble & Nicola Gilmore.

Thanks as always goes to the Department of Economic Development for their continued support of what is without doubt one of the premier events on the bowling calendar.

It was also great to see quite a lot of new faces, as well as regular ones, which is a good indicator that Steve Moore and his team are continuing to do a fantastic job in both promoting and running both the June and September Bowls Festivals.

W. A. Roberts ladies’ singles

There was a field of 34 for the W.A.Roberts ladies’ singles played at Port St Mary on Wednesday 10 May. The event was sponsored once again by Celtic Associates, represented by Iain Wood who showed how his bowls has progressed since last year by delivering the first wood of the afternoon.

Despite the miserable wet weather the players produced some superb bowling throughout the afternoon, with some close matches and surprise results particularly in the early rounds.

Quarter-finals: Janet Monk 21, Hannah Drewett 14; Philippa Taylor 21, Caroline Parker 18; Margaret Tasker 21, Alison Keggen 10; Val Macfarlane 21, Mavis Franks 16.

Semi-finals: Janet Monk 21, Philippa Taylor 10; Val Macfarlane 21,Margaret Tasker 15.

Janet seemed to become more consistent as the afternoon progressed and Val found herself up against it in the final. Janet played very few loose woods, and although Val did not play badly her good woods were usually removed by her opponent. It was a final of high quality with Janet just having that all important edge.

Kath Looney thanked everyone for coming and those who stayed to the end. Thanks also went to Celtic Associates for their continued sponsorship of the event, and to everyone who contributed to the smooth running of the afternoon. She then introduced Iain Wood to make the presentations. Iain had been impressed by the standard of bowling and stated that Celtic Associates would be pleased to continue to sponsor the event next year.

Flo Doan ladies’ doubles

21 pairs entered the Flo Doan ladies’ doubles played at Peel on Saturday 30 July, where the green was running well and the weather stayed fair until the latter stages at which point it became a little cooler. There was some excellent bowling on view throughout, with most players enjoying their games.

Semi-finals: Jenny Moore and Elaine Moore 21, Ann Hollingworth and Heike Perry 19; Helen Martin and Janet Monk 21, Jean Thackrah and Mavis Franks 7.

Helen and Janet made the better start in the final, leading 12-7 after five ends, but Elaine and Jenny won the next 5 ends, which included a 2 and a 3, to nudge ahead 15-12. The Mooragh pair scored a 3 followed by a single to give them a one point lead, but this was the end of their resistance as the pair from South Ramsey had another run of five ends to take the match 21-16.

The presentation was made by club president, Heather Horsburgh, who thanked everyone who had entered, those who had stayed to the end, and everyone who had contributed to the smooth running of the afternoon.

Elaine thanked the Peel club, particularly the green keeper for the beautiful condition of the green.
