The Ladies Association Millennium Fours knockout was held last Saturday afternoon attracting an entry of 8 teams of four with each match consisting of two single games and one doubles. Losing out in the semi-finals were the mixed team of Maureen Payne, Sue Gawne, Tracy Moore and Caroline Whitehead who lost to the Marown Team of Rebecca Teare, Deborah Leece, Clare Cooper and Helen Withers, with the Marown/South Ramsey team of Lynda Cadamy, Philippa Taylor, Joyce Ogden and Lyn Bolton losing to the South Ramsey/Mooragh Park team of Kim Hargraves, Jenny Moore, Shannon McMullan and Janet Monk.  In the final, Rebecca won the first of the singles games 15-10 against Shannon whilst Jenny for the South/Mooragh won the second singles 15-14 against Deborah.  It was all to play for in the doubles with Marown just ahead by 4 points.  Game was to and fro with the South/Mooragh pairing of Kim and Janet eventually overcoming Clare and Helen to win 15-13.  Although South/Mooragh team won on games, they lost the match by two points. Result : Marown 42 points, South/Mooragh 40 points.  Presentation was made by the Ladies President with Clare, on behalf of the Marown Team, thanking Nobles Bowling Club for hosting the competition, all their opponents and those involved for a great afternoon.

On Saturday morning an entry of 12 girls took part in the Junior Lady Crown Green Bowling championship at Nobles Park Bowling Club. Competition was run as a round robin with the girls being split into two groups and games played 11 up off scratch.  All the girls played exceptionally well in the rounds with the winner of group one being Aailish Haworth (Mooragh Park) with 54 points and the winner of group two Rebekah Kelly (Marown) with 44 points.  In the final the two girls were evenly matched and on 11^th end Aalish lead 9-7. Rebekah, with some good lead bowls, won the next three ends to win her well-deserved first junior championship 11-9.  The future for ladies bowling is certainly in good hands!  Presentation was made by the Ladies President who thanked all the junior ladies for taking part and treating the spectators to some excellent bowling.

At the halfway stage of the ladies open age crown green bowling season, Castletown A are currently at the top just over 100 points ahead of  Port St Mary with Onchan closely behind in third place. Castletown’s lead was helped by a good home win against an improving Onchan with Tracy Moore (Castletown) being the only player to win to single figures. Port St Mary are keeping up the pressure courtesy of a 7-2 win at home to Douglas with Paula Garrett and Jan West being the two winners for Douglas. Match of the night was between Peel who took on Castletown B at home. Although Peel won five games to four, Castletown B took the match by 33 points. Barbara Young, Linda Dawson and Joy Stephens (Castletown) won to single figures with Lynda Wilson doing the same for Peel.

In the Over 60’s league on Thursday morning,  Port St Mary A, Onchan A and Peel had good home wins against Finch Hill, Port Erin and Port St Mary B respectively. Margaret Tasker and Chris Price (PSM A), Dee Lewis and Caroline Corlett (Onchan), Mary Moffatt (Peel) and Edwina Reid (PSM B) all won to single figures.  Marown had the best win of the morning getting a full house against Onchan B. The home derby between Mooragh A and B resulted in a 3-3 draw with the A team winning by 14 points. Castletown A travelled to Ramsey for their match against South Ramsey. The match finished 4-2 and by 19 points to South.

Therefore, at the halfway stage only five points separate the top three teams. Peel are currently in first place with 1607 points, second Castletown A 1603 and third Onchan 1602 points, so it is all to play for in the second half.  

Second round of the Over 60s JMS competition was played last Thursday morning.

Last Friday saw the second maximum of the season in the ladies open age league when Port St Mary beat their neighbours, Port Erin 189 to 66 with six of Port St Mary players winning to single figures.

The local derby between Mooragh Park and South Ramsey ended with South winning 6-3 and by 51 points. Aalish Haworth and Caroline Parker (Mooragh) had tough battles against Lauren Groen and Sue Collier with Aalish and Caroline eventually winning to 18 and 19 respectively. On Tuesday night, South Ramsey travelled to Castletown A for their rearranged game. Heike Perry, Tracy Moore and Hilary Kermode (Castletown) plus Jenny Moore and Fiona Kennish (South) all won their games to single figures.

Ladies Over 60’s

Marown were the only team to score a maximum on Tuesday in the Over 60’s league against Mooragh Park B. Best score for Mooragh was Anne Kean who lost to 11. Castletown A played Port St Mary B at home. The only winner for Port was Wyn Collister who won to 13 against Anne Oates.

LADIES ASSOCIATION TRIPLES: On Sunday 27th June, 13 pairs entered the Ladies Association Triples competition held at Ballaugh.  The weather was perfect for an excellent afternoon of bowling.

Getting through to the semi-finals were Gill Morgan, Sonya Mercer and Maureen Lacey against Elaine Moore, Gill Dixon and Elaine Fenton, with Jenny Moore, Fiona Kennish and Kim Hargraves playing Joyce Ogden, Philippa Taylor and Lynda Cadamy. In the first semi the trio of Moore, Dixon and Fenton won 21-6, with Moore, Kennish and Hargraves winning 21-18. In the final it was nip and tuck at the start, but then Moore, Kennish and Hargraves started to pull away eventually winning 21-15.

The Presentation was made by the Ladies Association President Sue Gawne. On behalf of Jenny, Kim and herself, Fiona thanked all their opponents, the Ladies competition committee for a well organised afternoon and Ballaugh for hosting.

We are only two weeks away from the halfway stage in the Ladies open age bowling season and it could not be closer at the top. Currently Onchan are in top position, but with Castletown A and South Ramsey still to play their rearranged match on Thursday this may change. Onchan are certainly keeping up the pressure with a good away win at Port Erin last Friday night. Closest game of the match was a nip and tuck affair between Kay Primrose Smith (Port) and Marilyn Ellison with Marilyn winning to 20. Junior lady bowler Grace Gawne (Onchan) played very well with a good win to 13 against Pauline Worrall. Castletown B continue to grow with a good away win against Mooragh Park. Caroline Parker (Mooragh) and Joy Stephens had a tough game with Caroline eventually winning 21-17. Debra Cooper, Linda Dawson, Ann Hollingworth and Jo Roberts (Castletown B) won to single figures, as did Chris Sims and Janet Monk for Mooragh.

Last Thursday’s over 60’s matches produced two maximums of the morning. First maximum was achieved by Onchan A when they played their B team. Paula Firth and Dee Lewis (A) won to single figures with the two closest games being Sylvia Kennaugh (A) winning to 15 against Libby Andrade and Jean Quine (A) winning to 17 against Marilyn Ellison. Second maximum was by Port St Mary who won comfortably at home against Mooragh Park B. On Tuesday morning, the top two teams in the Over 60’s, Castletown A and Peel, played each other at Castletown. Although Peel played well, Castletown were on their ‘A’ game winning by four games to two, although it could have been five games as Hilary Kermode (Castletown) just lost out to 20 against Lynda Wilson.

British Merit Qualifier: There was an entry of 13 ladies for the British Merit Qualifier at Peel on Sunday. Getting through to the semi-finals were Jenny Moore (South) against Shannon McMullan (Mooragh) and Janet Monk (Mooragh) against Lil Smith (Marown). Jenny and Janet were on top form in the semis both winning to 4. The final could have gone either way with both ladies playing exceptionally well, but on the 28th end Jenny scored two to win 21-17. Jenny and Janet will both represent the IOM at the British Merit finals on Saturday 15 August at Heaton Park, Manchester.

Last Thursday saw three quarter finals of the Jean Kelly knockout competition being played. Marown A had a comfortable home win against Port St Mary, as did Castletown A away to Mooragh Park. Closest game of the night was between South Ramsey and Onchan with South winning by a margin of 3.  The remaining quarter final between Marown B  and Peel is being held this Thursday.

Friday night’s open age league produced some interesting scores especially the match between Marown A and Port St Mary.  Having lost to Marown the previous night in the Jean Kelly competition Port were in no mood for a repeat performance winning by 40 points.  Chris Price and Kellie Maddrell for Port both won to single figures with Philippa Taylor having the best score for Marown winning to 10.  The two closest games were between Lynda Cadamy (Marown) and Margie Tasker;  Elaine Dewhirst (Marown) and Trish Bull with Lynda winning to 20 and Trish winning to 18. Castletown B had a good away win against Ballaugh with Christine McDonald, Michelle Cubbon, Elaine Fenton (Ballaugh) and Rachel Palmer (Castletown) all winning 21-20.  South Ramsey travelled to Port Erin with Lauren Groen for South coming back from 17-12 to win 21-20.  Mooragh Park played host to Peel with Janet Monk and Shannon McMullan (Mooragh) plus Gill Clarke (Peel) winning their games to single figures.

Ballaugh had a good away win against Onchan B on Tuesday in the Over 60s league winning by 31 points.  Julie Reilly and Maureen Trustham (Ballaugh) both won to single figures with Sue McCourt (Onchan) getting to 12 against Barbara Graham.  Closest game was between Norma Cowell (Onchan) and Brenda Bowyer with Brenda just edging out Norma 21-18.  The two winners for Onchan were Libby Andrade and Ann Davies who won to 14 and 15 respectively. Castletown A hosted Port St Mary.  This was always going to be tough match and it didn’t disappointment.  Hilary Kermode and Ann Hollingworth (Castletown) had tough games against Trish Bull and Wendy Kennaugh with Hilary winning to 16 and Trish to 15.  Only player to win to single figures was Mavis Franks (Port).  Peel were home to Onchan A.  Again this was a fairly close match with Joyce Kelly and Mary Moffatt (Peel) winning to single figures with the best score for Onchan being Dee Lewis winning to 12 against Pat Robertson.  Finch Hill travelled to Ramsey for their match against Mooragh Park B with Jan Osborne, Brenda Williams and Iris Kermode (Finch) all winning to single figures.

Last week saw the first of a double set off league fixtures in the Open Age Ladies Crown Green Bowls.  On Wednesday night Onchan had a good home win against an improving Castletown B. Game of the match was between Caroline Corlett (Onchan) and Ann Hollingworth.  It was nip and tuck throughout with Caroline eventually winning 21-20. Another good contest was between two junior bowlers Grace Gawne (Onchan) and Charlotte Peach. Grace was on excellent form winning to 7.   Jo Smith, Joanne Kelly, Sue Gawne and Maureen Payne (Onchan) all won to single figures, with Barbara Young (Castletown) winning to 11 against another junior bowler, Lily Gawne.  Mooragh Park played  Port St Mary at home.  It was a close match throughout with Jayne Kneen (PSM) being the only player to win to single figures. Castletown A had a good home win against Marown A.

Friday night saw Douglas take on Ballaugh at home. This was a close encounter with Ballaugh winning by nine points.  Jan West, Paula Garrett and Harley Garrett (Douglas) won to single figures as did Cath Harvey, Christine McDonald and Elaine Fenton for Ballaugh.  The two closest games saw Emma Sayle (Douglas) losing to 17 against Pat Mason with Rose Waterworth (Ballaugh) losing to the same score against Jane Lothian. Mooragh Park travelled to Crosby for their match against Marown A with Philippa Taylor, Jayne Smith, Lynda Cadamy and Lil Smith for Marown winning to single figures.  Janet Monk had the best score for Mooragh winning to 11. Port St Mary played host to Marown B.  Only two of the nine games made double figures, these were Trish Bull and Nicola Cain (Port) winning to 16 and 20 against Debbie Leece and Helen Withers.

Over 60’s. The closest match last Thursday morning was between Onchan A and Port St Mary A with Onchan winning four games to two.  The two winners for Port St Mary A were Chris Price and Margie Tasker who both won to 16 with Paula Firth for Onchan winning to single figures. Peel Sunset played host to Finch Hill.  Peel were on good form with Pat Robertson and Lynda Wilson winning to single figures, with Lil Smith for Finch winning to 14. The only team to get a full house was Mooragh Park A against Castletown B, with Janet Monk winning to 7 and Pat Lenton to 3.

There were four maximums on Tuesday morning with Onchan A having a good win to 74 against Marown; Finch Hill won to 73 against Onchan B; Port Erin to 79 against Mooragh Park B, whilst the home derby between Castletown B and A resulted in a convincing win for the A team to 32.
