ALL TO PLAY FOR IN THE LADIES OVER 60’S CROWN GREEN BOWLING LEAGUE
The penultimate fixture in the Ladies Crown Green Bowling Open Age League held last Friday resulted in all the four top teams recording good wins.
Castletown A were at home to Marown B and although Marown took three games off Castletown, Castletown’s 167 points win is enough to put them clearly at the top of the table. Second placed Port St Mary visited neighbours Port Erin coming away with a six games to three win with the closest game being between Jacqui Elliot (PE) against Margie Tasker with Jacqui just edging it 21-20.
Marown A, who were only a point ahead of South Ramsey last week, scored 174 points at home against Castletown B but with South Ramsey getting 180 points at home to Mooragh Park, South now take third place five points ahead of the Crosby Ladies. With only one fixture left to play, third and fourth places will be decided as South Ramsey are due to play Marown A at home next Friday. Current fifth placed Onchan had a tough game away at Ballaugh winning 5-4 on games and by five points. Louise Tebay and Cath Harvey (Ballaugh) won to single figures as did Jo Smith and Sue Gawne for Onchan. Peel played host to Douglas winning the match by 32 points. Gill Clarke (Peel) and Sue Caley had a tough battle with Gill eventually winning 21-20.
Tuesday’s Over 60’s results proved interesting. Second placed Port St Mary A scored a maximum away to Mooragh Park B with four of Port’s games being won to single figures. Current leaders Castletown A were home to Marown and although the match finished three games all, Castletown lost by 10 points. Third placed Peel visited South Ramsey coming away with a 4-2 win and by 27 points. Closest game was between Ann Gale and Terri Berry with the latter winning to 20. The home derby between the Onchan Teams resulted in a win for the A ladies by 47 points with five of the six games being won to single figures. With only two fixtures left to play it couldn’t be closer at the top with only 43 points separating the top three teams – all to play for ladies!
MAROWN LADIES RETAIN JMS VETERANS SHIELD
The semi-finals and final of the JMS Veterans Shield were played last Thursday at Port Erin.
Getting through to the semis were Marown (last year’s holders), Port St Mary A, South Ramsey and Castletown A.
The first semi was between Marown and Port St Mary. Unfortunately Port St Mary were a player short and this did impact on the score with Marown taking the match six games to nil and by 51 points. In the second semi, South Ramsey played Castletown with South winning four games to two and by 23 points.
With the individual handicaps in place, the final started with South off 19 points and Marown off 14. The first three games on the green saw Mair Moore, Joyce Ogden and Celia Joughin (Marown) taking on Elaine Moore, Gillian Jopson and Moira Anderson. Elaine for South won to one with Joyce and Celia winning to 6 and 11. With scores equal at the halfway stage it was still all to play for. Fourth, fifth and sixth games saw Rosie Winckle, Philippa Taylor and Lynda Cadamy (Marown) playing Sue Collier, Ann Gale and Judy Kelly. The Marown trio proved too strong with Rosie, Philippa and Lynda winning to 9, 11 and 8 respectively. Overall result was five games to one for Marown and by 40 points. A well deserved win for the Crosby ladies.
The presentation of trophy and prizes was made by the sponsor of the competition Janet Latham who is also the Ladies Association Treasurer. Marown Captain, Philiippa Taylor, on behalf of her ladies thanked Janet for her continued sponsorship, Port Erin for the use of their green and the excellent refreshments, anyone who helped on the day and all their opponents.
In the Open Age League current leaders Castletown A ladies suffered their first defeat of the season away at fourth placed South Ramsey last Friday night. Elaine Moore, Fiona Kennish and Lauren Groen (South) all won to single figures as did Kath Kinley for Castletown. Game of the match was between Sue Collier (South) against Alison Kearsley with both ladies matching each other point for point. At 20 across Alison was lying game only for Sue to play a great bowl to get the point she needed to win 21-20.
Port St Mary and Marown who are currently second and third in the league table, both had good away wins at Peel and Douglas respectively. Therefore, Castletown A head the leader board on 3413 points followed by Port St Mary on 3250 with Marown third on 3179 only one point ahead of South Ramsey on 3178. With two fixtures remaining, I feel Castletown may have done enough to win the league, but second and especially third and fourth places are still very much up for grabs.

Photo: Pat LentonA disappointing entry did not deter the spirit and friendliness of North Ramsey Bowling Club at this year’s Ladies Ramsey Town Cup played on Saturday 28th August at Mooragh Park. Conditions could not have been better with sunshine all afternoon.
Following great games in the opening rounds the first semi-final was played between Victoria Johnson and Anne Kean with a convincing win for Victoria 21-3. The second semi was between Caroline and Janet Monk. This was a much closer game with both players fighting for every point and lying 19 across in the final stages. On the last end Caroline secured the final point she needed to win her place in the final 21-19.
The final between Victoria and Caroline was a convincing win for Caroline who had been playing really well all day. The score does not reflect the standard of play with Victoria demonstrating her considerable talent but Caroline was so accurate and retained the jack for most of the match clinching her victory with a 21-1 win.
The prizes were presented by Peggy Freeman, who is Chair of North Ramsey, and she thanked all the members for helping on the day, especially the male members who had prepared the green and carried out all of the measuring as well as running the sheet. She also gave thanks to the anonymous local business who sponsored the event and made the considerable prize money possible.
FULL HOUSE FOR MAROWN A LADIES
Last Wednesday night Marown A scored a full house at home against Peel in the ladies crown green bowling open age league. The win was helped greatly by four of the Marown ladies winning to single figures. Joyce Ogden and Mary Moffatt had a tough battle with Joyce eventually winning to 18. Douglas had a good 5-4 win away at Mooragh Park with the closest game being between Victoria Johnson (Mooragh) and Jane Lothian with the latter winning to 19. Michelle Cowley and Paula Garrett (Douglas) plus Janet Monk for Mooragh, all won to single figures. Port St Mary travelled to Onchan coming away with a convincing 7-2 win. Two winners for Onchan were Paula Firth and Jo Smith who won to 6 and 16 respectively. Castletown derby ended with the A team just missing out on a maximum by four points. Preventing this was Linda Dobinson (B) who won to 17 against Amanda Lawler. Marown B travelled to Port Erin with the Marown ladies winning by 6 points. Jenny Cain and Jacqui Elliot (Port) plus Clare Cooper for Marown all won to single figures. Closest match of the night was Ballaugh at home against South Ramsey. Ballaugh won by three points with four of the games being won to single figures.
Over 60s ladies league: Two rearranged fixtures were played last Thursday. Results : Mooragh Park A 64 (1), Marown 116 (5); Onchan A 113 (4, Peel 88 (2)
On Tuesday morning Port St Mary A played Onchan B at home whilst Onchan A took on Port St Mary B. Both matches resulted in full houses for PSM A and Onchan A with PMS A winning by 67 points and Onchan A winning by 66 points. Two teams who just missed out on scoring maximums by two points were Ballaugh and Castletown A. Ballaugh played Port Erin at home with Julie Reilly and Jane Teare for Ballaugh both losing to 20 against Voirrey Curphey and Steph Swift. Castletown A were away to Mooragh Park A with Anne Oates for Castletown just losing to 19 against Maureen Hamilton.

MOORAGH PARK SHINE AT PEEL
In the Ladies Crown Green Bowling Open Age League, Mooragh Park recovered from their defeat last week with a good 7-2 away win at Peel on Friday night. Result was helped by Mooragh’s junior ladies bowling well with Shannon McMullan, Victoria Johnson and Aalish Howarth winning to 8, 16 and 15 respectively with their youngest bowler, Lacey McMullan, losing to 18 against Celia Smith. Closest game was between Louise Horsfall (Peel) and Pat Lenton with the latter winning to 19. Ballaugh also played well away to Castletown B winning by 42 points. Michelle Cubbon, Louise Tebay and Cath Harvey (Ballaugh) all won to single figures, as did Rachel Palmer for Castletown B. Toughest games of the night pitched Pat Rigby, Joy Stephens and Ann Hollingworth (Castletown) against Maria Dinsdale, Christine McDonald and Barbara Graham with Pat winning to 19, Joy to 20 and Barbara to 18.
In the ladies Over 60s league on Tuesday morning, Port St Mary home derby resulted in a full house for the ‘A’ team ladies. Four of the six games were all won to single figures with the closest result being a 21-15 win for Mavis Franks against Chris Holland. Castletown A played host to Onchan A and although the match finished three all on games, Castletown won by 12 points. Peel also had a good home win against Mooragh Park A only dropping five points. Given these results and with both Peel and Onchan A having a game in hand, the title is still up for grabs.
CASTLETOWN A LEAD THE WAY IN THE OVER 60S AND OPEN AGE LEAGUES
With only six league matches left to play in the Over 60s ladies league it couldn’t be closer at the top of the leader board with only 80 points separating first and third. Currently Castletown A are in first place, followed by Peel and then Port St Mary A. Castletown’s lead was greatly helped by a five-one win at home to their B team. It could have been a full house, but preventing this was Pat Rigby who won 21-20 against Barbara Young. Port St Mary A kept up the pressure with a good away at Peel. All games went into double figures with the closest game being Mary Moffatt against Trish Bull with Mary running out 21-18.
In the Open Age league, with only five fixtures remaining, there is a similar picture evolving as above with Castletown A currently in the lead followed by Port St Mary and then Marown A; a total of only 228 points separating first and third. Castletown A extended their lead slightly with a home win against Peel last Friday night. Kim Foy, Alison Kearsley and Tracy Moore, with Terri Berry for Peel all won their games to single figures. Port St Mary, keeping up the pressure, also had a good away win at Marown B. Closest game was between Helen Withers (Marown) and Trish Bull with the latter winning to 20. Marown A travelled to the Mooragh Park coming away with a good six-three win having to give a game away due to being a player short.
JMS VETERANS SHIELD
Final round (game 6) of the JMS Veteran’s Shield took place last Thursday. Going through to the semi-finals are Port St Mary A from Group A, South Ramsey from Group B, Marown from Group C and Castletown A from Group D. Semi-finals and final will be held at Port Erin on Thursday 2 September commencing at 10.30 am.

MAXIMUM FOR PORT ERIN LADIES
Open age league: Port Erin were on excellent form obtaining a full house at home against Peel in last Friday night’s Crown Green Bowling Ladies Open Age League. Di Benson and Jean Thackrah for Port won to single figures with the closest game being Caroline Whitehead (Port) winning to 19 against Mary Moffatt. Lynda Wilson and Louise Horsfall (Peel) couldn’t quite get over the line with both losing to 16 against Jacqui Elliott and Susan Inch. Marown B won 5-4 at home against Castletown B with Jo Corkill (Marown) just narrowly missing out making it six wins by losing to 20 against Sarah Morgan. Castletown A continue to head the leader board with a 7-2 win at home against Mooragh Park. Janet Monk and Shannon McMullan were the only winners for Mooragh winning to 15 and 6 respectively. Marown A won 5-4 away to Ballaugh with the game of the match being between Barbara Graham (Ballaugh) and Elaine Dewhirst with Barbara eventually winning to 20. Onchan played Douglas at home winning 7-2. Two winners for Douglas were Harley Garrett and Jan West who both won to single figures, as did Libby Andrade and Dee Lewis for Onchan. South Ramsey hosted Port St Mary with South winning 5-4. Result in games could have been the other way round with Jayne Kneen losing to 20 against Judy Kelly.
Over 60s league: Castletown A and Port St Mary B both recorded maximums at home against Finch Hill and Port Erin in Tuesday’s Over 60s league. All games went into double figures apart from Kath Kinley (Castletown) and Roma Ware (Port) who both won to single figures. Mooragh Park A had a good home win against Port St Mary A, although the match finished three all on games, Mooragh won on points. Onchan A had an impressive away win at South Ramsey winning 5-1. Five games were won to single figures apart from Sue Collier (South) who had a real tussle against Caroline Corlett before losing to 20 with the last twenty minutes of the game being played in torrential rain.
FIRST LADIES ASSOCIATION COMPETITION WIN FOR KIM

Photo: Glynn HargravesThe Ladies Association IOM Merit (Barbara Lee Trophy) competition was played on Sunday at Onchan Bowling Club attracting an entry of 24 ladies. Fortunately, the weather stayed fine for a great afternoon of bowling.
Going through to the first semi-final was junior bowler Madison McMullan (Mooragh Park) against the more experienced Trish Bull (Port St Mary). On the 14th end, Trish led 12-5 but with some excellent bowls Madison reduced this deficit to 13 across on the 22nd end. Trish drew on her experience, started to pull away and eventually won 21-16. The second semi-final was an all South Ramsey affair with Kim Hargraves taking on Sue Collier. Sue got off to a blistering start leading 14-5 on the 15th end but with sheer determination Kim dug deep winning 10 of the last 11 ends to win 21-16.
The final was certainly exciting to watch and well contested. With both playing well, it was 19 all on 32nd end. With a final flourish Kim took the next two ends to win her first major singles title 21-19.
Presentation of trophy and prizes was made by the Ladies Association President. Kim then thanked all her opponents, Onchan for hosting and Gill Morgan for the smooth running of the competition finishing off by saying she was ‘over the moon’ at winning.
Castletown A continue to dominant at the top of the ladies Open Age league with a good away win against fourth placed Marown last Wednesday night. Philippa Taylor and Alison Kearsley had a tough game with Philippa just edging it 21-20. Sue Peach (Castletown) also had a battle against Shirley Whelan with the latter eventually winning to 19. Celia Joughin (Marown) and Amanda Lawler (Castletown) were the only players to win to single figures. Ballaugh were also on fine form winning by 16 points away to Peel. The closest game was between Lynda Wilson (Peel) who won to 17 against Pam Unsworth.

In the Over 60’s league on Tuesday morning, Peel kept up the pressure on leaders Castletown A with a maximum away at Castletown B. The win was helped by Gill Clarke and Mona Kerruish winning to single figures. Susan Kerruish just missed out on winning a game for Castletown losing to 20 against Terri Berry. Another maximum was achieved by Finch Hill at home to Port St Mary B. with Port just missed out on winning two games as Chris Holland and Edwina Reid lost by 20 and 19 respectively.

Photo: Glynn HargravesThe final of the Jean Kelly was held at Onchan Bowling Club on Friday evening with the rain holding off for the evening, it was a much slower green than expected by the teams. There was a good crowd in attendance with fantastic support for both teams, which resulted in a great atmosphere around the green. With a neutral venue the handicaps were Castletown A (+17) and South Ramsey (+23) with South having just a six chalk start on their opponents not being a lot considering the huge gap between the teams in the league with Town starting the match as clear favourites to retain the title.
The first five games got underway with South Ramsey’s Gill Dixon undoubtedly a big game player storming home with a 21-9 win over Alison Kearsley, with the game finely balanced at 8-6 Dixon took 10 of the last 12 ends. Next off for South was Elaine Moore who similar to the first game, this was close as Moore led 10-9 against Sue Peach, to then run out with a 21-9 victory on a longer length. The third game off on the night was Jenny Moore who recovered from a slow start to beat Anne Oates 21-14.
Next off for South was captain Kim Hargraves who got off to a flier to lead 10-1 against Amanda Lawler, before the latter fought back to trail by one at 10-11. Hargraves kicked back into gear to go on another good run to win six of the last seven ends scoring four doubles on the way to claim a solid 21-11 win over Lawler.
The last game off from the first five games was Gill Morgan who played brilliantly, taking some good bowls off her opponent Hilary Kermode. With the game at 13-18 Morgan was counting with two good bowls only for Kermode to play a fantastic bowl to count. The game finished on the following end with Kermode taking a double to secure Town’s first win of the night and in doing so reduced the deficit to 39 chalks.
With the second half of the match underway South Ramsey had built a good lead, but were by no means home and dry, however South knew that 12 or more points from each player would be enough to seal the win with only four games left on the green.
Tracy Moore responded for Town with the biggest win of the night as she beat Fiona Kennish 21-6 to make things interesting, as this reduced the deficit to 24 chalks. The wins kept coming for Town with the next victory coming from captain Hannah Drewett who beat Lauren Groen 21-18, with Groen battling well to put her team one step closer to victory. The ever reliable Kath Kinley was next off with a 21-10 win over Jill Quayle, with Quayle performing well against a tough opponent.
The last game off for Town was Kim Foy with a 21-15 win over Sue Collier with the latter scoring five doubles on the night, this helped ensure that South Ramsey had scored enough points to seal the win by just four chalks (169-165). All of South Ramsey’s team contributed to their victory on the night and their third Jean Kelly title overall due to the match being played for on chalks. Huge credit must go to both teams who played their part for what was a thrilling final.
The presentation was made by Association President Sue Gawne, who introduced the Kelly Family who continue to support this competition and provided an excellent selection of refreshments to the players and supporters on the night. South Ramsey captain Kim Hargraves was then presented with the Shield. Hargraves thanked the Kelly family for the prizes and the refreshments, Onchan Bowling Club for hosting and congratulated her team on their performance whilst offering her commiserations to Castletown who had played their part in making it a fantastic final.
