The completion of the league programme in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowling Club was delayed by the weather after the six teams due to play over the weekend were left waiting by a frozen green.

Both sets of fixtures have been rescheduled for this coming Saturday and Sunday, when still to be decided are a number of league positions, including second to fifth in the final standings.

Also still up for grabs is the Geoff Osborn memorial trophy awarded to the top woman points scorer in the individual merit table and on form to date will be won by one of two Mooragh Lakers team-mates who are separated by just one point.

Currently top on average is Janet Monk, who is followed closely by Jenny Moore; next having completed their season are three members of the same team – Tricia Bull, Margaret Tasker and Alison Keggen, all Louie’s Angels.

Safe in the next two places are Kim Hargraves (Jacks Off) and Tracy Moore (Castletown Corkers).

Seven of the team merit winners are now known and six of them will represent the Rest team when they face up against the Best side during the prize presentation afternoon on Sunday, March 25.

They are Wayne Roberts (Erin Porters), Tricia Bull (Louie’s Angels), Paul Bailey (Parkers), Tracy Moore (Castletown Corkers), Dougie Allan (Govags) and Gordon Corrin (Bowl Rollers).

The seventh name is that of overall winner Matthew Keggen who will captain his team, along with some, as yet unknown, representatives in the season’s finale. Proceedings will commence at 1pm and as always raffle prizes would be very welcome.

In the meantime entries are still open for the club championship, which will take place on Saturday, March 17 (and Sunday, March 18 if required). The entry form is in the clubhouse at Nobles 3 green, but players can email the secretary on [email protected].

The closing date will be Sunday, March 11.

Long-time favourites, Jacks Off, wrapped up the league title in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowling Club at the weekend in record-breaking style, when they became the first team to win all their fixtures in a season.

They also set a new highest points average on 121.3, beating their own record of 120.5, set back in 2013, playing under the name, High Flyers. This was helped by nine maximum scores, with their two closest victories being against the outgoing champions, Mooragh Lakers, who lost out by just two points in the first clash and six the second time.

Back in 2009, called Hot Shots, they did in fact complete their programme undefeated, but had two drawn fixtures along the way.

You may see a theme developing here regarding team names; this is because over the past 11 seasons they have played with 10 different ones.

They won the league in 2008 called Generation Gap, ironically with the lowest average to date, and after the 2009 success, they missed out on the title when New Found Glory pipped them to the crown, then called Chancers.

Back they came to top the pile as New Avengers, High Flyers, Incredabowls, Rule Breakers and Mean Machine; missing out last year to Lakers, when they were called Unstopabowls.

They have had close to 30 different players in the squad over that 11 year period, but only one has participated every year, and that is Alan Moore, who now has a tally of nine league wins, one runner-up and one third to his credit.

The weekend’s fixtures had some teams still fighting for league positions and also saw another three complete their programme, on Saturday fourth placed Seven-Up kept the pressure on Outsiders who are now 30 points ahead, both with two to play, including taking on each other in their final outing.

Govags meanwhile will have to settle for ninth, as they cannot accumulate enough chalks in their last visit to Nobles to move up the table.

Finishing the season in sixth are Parkers, who did just enough on Sunday to stay ahead of Bowl Rollers by the margin of 21, while Castletown Cannons need to match their average in their last two fixtures to claim the bragging rights over stablemates Corkers.

Louie’s Angels bounced back from the previous week’s disappointment to record two good victories, but will need a miracle if they are to finish any higher than fifth, as they are just 192 chalks ahead of Seven-Up and 162 in front of Outsiders.

Jacks Off have the top three in the Derek Killey memorial trophy list, with Matthew Keggen winning the merit ahead of Glynn Hargraves and Stefan Kelly.

The destination of the Geoff Osborn memorial trophy for the leading lady is yet to decided, whereas the junior merit winner is Austin Hart, also Jacks Off.

Three more names have been added to the team, which will take on the league champions in the end of season finale and they are Tricia Bull (Louie’s Angels), Paul Bailey (Parkers) and Doug Allan (Govags).

The club heads into its final month with the league schedule almost complete and two major dates yet to come – the championship, for which entries are now being taken, will take place on Saturday, March 17 (and Sunday 18 if required), with the prize presentations afternoon the following Sunday.

A midweek round robin was held, when 44 entrants braved the extremely cold wind to compete in two groups of triples and one doubles.

The winning gangs were, Joan Murphy, Joy Stephens and Marg Tasker; Caroline Whitehead, Jean Thackrah and Lil Smith; Roma Ware and Peter Kelly.

The battle for positions near the top took another twist over the weekend in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowling League, after two below averages scores for Louie’s Angels saw them slip back down to fifth position.

The latest two days began on Saturday with a session in which all four teams improved their averages and second placed Mooragh Lakers strengthened their position with just two weekends remaining.

The current champions, well for a little while, started with a perfect result against Parkers, before dropping a solitary point in their outing with Castletown Cannons.

The southerners had earlier beaten basement side Bits n Bobs to record a fourth win of the campaign and extend their advantage over stablemates Corkers, who were due to play the following day.

Parkers meanwhile had the task of holding onto sixth spot, however this time they came out on the right side of a maximum scoreline, to record their first and the season’s 26th full house.

The weather took a turn for the worse just as the players began Sunday’s session, which included the teams occupying third to fifth and was postponed back in January.

One of the opening clashes saw third placed Outsiders come out on top by a margin of 21 points against Louie’s Angels, who were fourth.

This while next to bottom Castletown Corkers would have been quite happy to have taken a game from Seven-Up who occupied fifth.

Things didn’t get any easier for Angels as they next had to take on the side directly behind them and to make matters worse had to compete short of a player after one of them had to drop out because of illness.

They were already two regulars missing from their line-up and after recording only 84 points, slipped down behind opponents Seven-Up, who themselves dropped just five chalks to remain hot on the heals of their rivals.

Another team finished their league campaign in this session, when Corkers lost out by five games to one against Outsiders, who themselves came very close to a maximum.

The league crown might well be all but settled, however there are still some tight battles going on for individual honours, especially in the womens section, which is led by Janet Monk (Lakers) ahead of team-mate Jenny Moore, they are separated by just one point.

Both had scares in their opening games on Saturday against Parkers, Janet coming through against Brian Woodall to 20 and Jenny fighting back to overcome Paul Bailey on 19.

There was no change in the top three places overall, with those involved having the weekend off, so with two games left to play, the threesome all from Jacks Off are divided by eight points and are led by Matthew Keggen, who is followed by Glynn Hargraves and Stefan Kelly.

Next come Monk and Moore; with sixth being occupied by Brian Kelly (Lakers). Two team-mates are locked together on the same tally in seventh and eighth after Tricia Bull (Angels) closed the gap on Margy Tasker who suffered her sixth defeat of the season.

Wayne Roberts (Porters) is ninth, whilst moving down the list on averages from games played by the team rather than individually, next come Dougie Allan (Govags); James Teare (Lakers); Alison Keggen (Angels); Frank Watson (Outsiders); Paul Bailey (Parkers) and Kim Hargraves (Jacks Off).

The latest player to qualify for the Rest squad, which will compete against the Best on Sunday, March 25, is next and that is Tracey Moore (Corkers); holding onto 17th is top junior, Austin Hart (Jacks Off).

Making up the top 20 at this time are Rebecca Teare (Lakers); Tony Dugdale (Outsiders) and Gordon Corrin (Bowl Rollers).

One positional battle was decided on a snowy afternoon in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowling League, whilst there are still others to be settled over the next three weekends.

Two teams completed their programme on Sunday and at the start of play were locked together on the same average, however when all the points were added up, Bowl Rollers claimed the bragging rights over Erin Porters by a close margin of just three and currently occupy eighth spot.

This was not the only change of positions after Louie’s Angels – or perhaps they should be the ‘Snow Angels’ – racked up two good scores, which moved them into fourth above Seven-Up and only 19 chalks behind third placed Outsiders.

The action began on Saturday with leaders Jacks Off emerging with a 16-chalk victory over third placed Outsiders.

Govags then joined the fray but struggled to a total of just 75, whereas opponents Jacks Off just missed out on their 10^th maximum of the campaign.

The final clash of the session saw Outsiders match the 124 recorded in the earlier fixture and with Govags only scoring 96 their average slipped and I believe will now have to settle for ninth place.

As mentioned earlier Rollers and Porters arrived at the green on Sunday level on points, however the last time this quartet of teams were in action together, Rollers left with 44 chalks more than their close rivals.

It was advantage Porters following the opening session of games, after they recorded a total of 118 against Castletown Corkers and Louie’s Angels beat Rollers 117 to 92.

Not long into the next set of fixtures, along came some showers of snow to add to the strong wind, but this did not deter Louie’s Angels who dropped just five points, but more importantly left their southern neighbours, Porters, back on 91.

This all left Rollers needing a total of 118 or better to move back up that one place and they sneaked home against Corkers with two to spare.

One player said after finishing his game, that he couldn’t remember having played in all four seasons of the year during one game of bowls.

At the head of the table Jacks Off need to score 164 points to secure the league title, whereas the battle for second to fifth will go down to the wire.

This Sunday will see a set of fixtures postponed back in January, so the next free day will be Saturday, March 10. While one week later on March 17, the club championships will take place, entries for which are now being taken at the clubhouse.

Two players have qualified for the annual Best against Rest contest, which will take place on Sunday, March 25; they are Wayne Roberts (Erin Porters) and Gordon Corrin (Bowl Rollers).

Two groups of players made up the entry for the midweek round robin and in the black jack doubles section the winners were Steve Parker and Mark Kelly, ahead of Alec Taylor and David Clucas, with third being taken by Derek Allen and Lynda Wilson.

Ken Karran and Tricia Bull topped the other gang, ahead of Brian Masterson and Peter Kelly in second, and Doug Allan and Allan Kennaugh third.

While the second and third placed sides strengthened their positions in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowling Club with two more victories apiece, there is still a close battle going on for sixth to ninth spots in the table.

The weekend began with a set of three fixtures that finished with a total of only 11 points separating the participants.

Opening the session were sixth placed Parkers against Outsiders who are currently third and it was the latter that came out on top by the margin of five chalks.

The victors then took on Seven-Up who are directly behind them in the standings and after a share of the games it was a double success on the day for Outsiders by 107 to 104.

Back into the fray came Parkers but they missed out once again, this time in another fairly low scoring tussle with Seven-Up, which was settled by just three points.

This all saw Outsiders stretch their advantage over rivals Seven-Up by 18 points, whilst Parkers consolidated their sixth spot, with the two teams behind them due to play 24 hours later.

Sunday’s gang featured two teams divided at the start by a gap of six points in favour of Bowl Rollers over Erin Porters, but finished with both on 2110 apiece and with the southern outfit ahead with less chalks against.

This was a set of fixtures reversed from the opening day of the campaign and the only change was the margins of victory for the winners.

First it was second placed Mooragh Lakers who increased their successful gap to 35 over Rollers; whilst Porters extended the winning difference against basement side Bits n Bobs to 49.

Next up Porters reduced the deficit against Lakers down to eight, but even though Rollers recorded their second and the league’s 24^th maximum they slipped behind their southern rivals, both with two to play.

Waiting in the wings in ninth position are Govags and they will need to increase their average if they want to climb above Porters and Rollers,

Lakers meantime increased the margin between second and third by a further six points, but in turn are now over 100 behind runaway leaders Jacks Off.

A gang of 21 braved the cold conditions for the midweek round robin and these threesomes took the leading positions: Steve Parker, Lil Smith and Bryan Corner (winners); Tricia Bull, Philippa Taylor and Jeff Wilson (second) and in third were Mike Ware, Trevor Barker and Vicky Lloyd-West.

There was just one day of league fixtures over the weekend in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowling Club calendar and along with the leaders, there were three teams jostling for places in the lower half of the table.

Bowl Rollers were the latest side to be on the wrong side of a six games to nil result against top outfit Jacks Off, who took their tally of maximums to nine and the overall total so far to 23.

Erin Porters (seventh) and ninth placed Govags were also competing on a very blustery afternoon and even though Porters won four games, they lost out by six points, which meant that Govags gained revenge for the last time these two clashed.

Also turning an earlier defeat into victory were Bowl Rollers who dropped just two chalks in a five games to one success over western rivals Govags.

Porters fought hard in their final fixture to try and maintain a slender advantage over Rollers and Govags, but they slipped down below them both after defeat against Jacks Off.

They did win one game and what an important outcome, especially in the battle for the individual merit; as it was a second loss for leader Stefan Kelly, who could only manage a score of 13 against Wayne Roberts, this means he now drops behind team-mate Matthew Keggen in the standings.

As for the league battles – Jacks Off just need to average 106 points from each of their last four fixtures to ensure they cannot be caught at the top.

Rollers meantime now occupy seventh on a score of 105.39, next are Govags, and they are on exactly the same average as Porters, both have 105.06.

Two round robins were held prior to Sunday’s fixtures, with the midweek session having an entry of 29, which had some close results.

In the doubles, three pairs completed the contest with the same amount of points and after a roll-up the victors were Mark Kelly and Derek Cadamy; second went to Bernie McPhee and Bryan Corner and missing out in third spot were Doug Allan and Peter Kelly.

Triples was the order of the day for the other group and coming out on top were Elaine Moore, Terry Bates and Bernard Thackrah; in second after another roll-up were Rita Callister, Lil Smith and Kevin Firth, with the trio of Lynda Cadamy, Ken Karran and Jeff Wilson just missing out.

There was another gathering on Saturday, but just 17 braved the windy conditions, the groups were re-drawn after the first session and the individual top three were Philippa Taylor, Steve Crampton and Alec Taylor.

It was business as usual for leaders Jacks Off on the one day possible over the latest weekend in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowls League when they extended their winning run to 16 and opened the points margin.

First into action was the top two in a fixture that was decided by just six chalks in favour of Jacks Off and as a consequence improved their lead over their closest rivals Mooragh Lakers.

Basement side Bits n Bobs then joined the fray and if their task wasn’t tough enough, they had to compete against teams who had already played. Unfortunately they couldn’t prevent two whitewashes against them to remain rooted to the bottom with only six fixtures left to play.

Results for Saturday, January 20: Jacks Off 113 (3), Mooragh Lakers 107 (3); Mooragh Lakers 126 (6), Bits n Bobs 65 (0); Bits n Bobs 67 (0), Jacks Off 126 (6).

With the playing surface already soft from the rain prior to Saturday, another spell of wet stuff put paid to any chance of games the following afternoon and these fixtures have been re-scheduled for Sunday, February 18; so with no league games this Saturday (January 27) a round robin will take place.

Not only are Jacks Off setting records at the top of the league, they also occupy the leading two spots in the standings for the Derek Killey memorial trophy, awarded to the winner of the individual merit.

Things are a little closer after Saturday, however, Stefan Kelly went into the session with 14 wins from 14 played, but was beaten to 19 by Jenny Moore from Mooragh Lakers; whilst closest rival Matthew Keggen won, the two are now separated by six points, both with six to play.

Waiting in the wings for a slip up are Stuart Garrett (Outsiders) and Glynn Hargraves (Jacks Off); whilst in fifth position is Rob Monk (Lakers) who dropped down the rankings after a defeat.

The next two places are occupied by team-mates and leaders for the Geoff Osborn memorial trophy awarded to the top lady; Janet Monk and the aforementioned Jenny Moore are separated by just one point.

Next on averages in eighth to 12th in the overall listing are Doug Allan (Govags), Brian Kelly (Lakers) and Margaret Tasker, Rebecca Teare and Tricia Bull, all Louie’s Angels. The leading junior, Austin Hart (Jacks Off), is in 26th overall.

An extremely cold afternoon meant that only 24 hardy players took part in the midweek round robin, with the runaway winners in the black jack group being David Clucas and Mike Ware.

Securing the runners-up spot to make it a good afternoon for one family, were Roma Ware and Philippa Taylor.

Topping the yellow jack gang was the pairing of Mark Kelly and Doug Allan, with second going to Rita Callister and Bryan Corner.

Parkers are up into the top six after the latest weekend in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowls League; they climbed three places after two good scores on Sunday afternoon.

Neither day had great weather for bowling, but Saturday’s gang certainly had the worst of it with constant rain all through the session.

Third placed Outsiders were in action and dropped three less chalks than Seven-Up who occupy fourth position; the margin between the pair is now seven points.

Outsiders opened with a 114 to 99 point victory over Bowl Rollers, whereas Seven-Up temporarily held the advantage with a score of 123 against Erin Porters.

The two sides then swapped opponents and almost did the same with the results, however Outsiders took their winning tally to 125, while Seven-Up recorded 113 in a three-all in games against Rollers.

Further down the table, this left Porters in sixth on a reduced average of 105.8, Rollers also slightly lower on 105.4, Govags next on 104.6 and just behind were Parkers, who were scheduled to play 24-hours later, on 104.1.

Results for Saturday, January 13: Bowl Rollers 99 (2), Outsiders 114 (4); Erin Porters 89 (2), Seven-Up 123 (4); Outsiders 125 (5), Erin Porters 94 (1); Seven-Up 113 (3), Bowl Rollers 108 (3).

An injury to Kiera Corlett (whilst playing doubles for Castletown Corkers with her mother Mary) midway through the game on Sunday; meant that the pair had to retire, ahead of them going to hospital.

May we all wish Kiera a speedy recovery and hope to see her back playing soon.

The action continued in what was the first three-team session of the season and I am sure Parkers would not have wanted to benefit on the points front this way, but they went on to record a 123 to 85 victory.

Cannons also struggled in the difficult conditions in a fixture that saw Parkers notch up another good score and in the process jump up three places into sixth on an average of 106.4.

The unfortunate incident earlier in the afternoon had a bearing on the final encounter when the two Castletown outfits went head to head.

Cannons took full advantage of their opponents being two players short and notched up their third success with a 111 to 68 scoreline, swapping places in the table with their stablemates.

Wednesday’s round robin had an entry of 48 players, which was split into three groups of triples, with the closest outcome being in the black jack section, settled after a roll-up in favour of Philippa Taylor, Carol Kaye and Lynda Cadamy. Just missing out were Terry Bates, Rita Callister and Pauline Worrall.

Topping the yellow gang were Trevor Barker, Shirley Whelan and Joy Stephens, with second going to Derek Clarke, Mark Kelly and Kevin Firth.

Finally in the red jack section, Alan Moore, David Clucas and Elaine McElroy were triumphant, ahead of Bernard Thackrah, Sheila Preston and Clyde Quine.

Four more maximums over the latest weekend in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowls League took the season’s tally to 20, with no less than seven of those going to runaway leaders, Jacks Off.

They racked up another two with a second faultless afternoon on Sunday, while just 24 hours earlier their nearest challengers, Mooragh Lakers, dropped 27 points in their third defeat of the campaign.

Now on an increased average of 122.5, over six ahead of Lakers, Jacks Off are well on their way to wrestling the championship shield away from their closest rivals and current holders, who will have to improve if they are to hold onto second spot.

The two days began with Louie’s Angels coming out on top by four chalks in a fairly low scoring encounter against Mooragh Lakers; this while Castletown Corkers notched up only their second success with victory over basement side Bits n Bobs.

Bits were unfortunately the first team this season not to have a full team, whereas the two Castletown outfits are making great use of the rule where players can compete for more than one side for up to five times before the individual is tied to any particular one – Corkers are now up to 21 different names, whereas Cannons are close behind on 17.

On the green, Angels and Lakers both recorded maximum scores in their final outings as they overcame Bits n Bobs and Corkers, who, over the session improved their average slightly to stay above their stablemates who were due to play the following day.

Sunday’s quartet arrived to a slightly frozen green, which did not stop two of the teams taking advantage – Jacks off with those maximum scores and Govags who racked up a pair of good wins and as a result moved up a position in the standings.

Whilst Jacks Off eased passed an out of sorts Parkers outfit, the westerners dropped just four chalks in a five games to one victory over Castletown Cannons.

Cannons next had the arduous task of taking on Jacks Off and with a total of just 73 they slipped further behind Corkers on an average of 88.9, whilst their stablemates are on 90.5.

Jacks Off meanwhile are on course to set more records, they are already on course to beat the best average over a season of 119.4 they set in 2015 and are currently are on a total of 73 games for, with just 11 against.

The final clash of the session saw Govags beat Parkers by a margin of eight points and now lead them in the table by seven and in turn are now just 15 behind seventh placed Bowl Rollers.

The first round robin of the New Year attracted an entry of 28 and the winners of the two groups were Sefton Dent, partnered by Peter Kelly and the duo of Janet Monk and Tricia Bull.

Another year of league fixtures was brought to a close in the Manx Petroleum sponsored Outdoor Winter Bowling Club with a set of fixtures involving three of the leading four teams.

Delayed due to snow some three weeks earlier, the afternoon saw eight time champions Jacks Off drop just six chalks as they completed 2017 in dramatic fashion.

First into the fray were leaders Jacks Off against fourth placed Outsiders and even though the latter took two games, they went down by a 28 point margin in a 120-92 scoreline.

Also in this clash one of the remaining individual unbeaten records was halted, with the 21-13 defeat of Stuey Garrett (Outsiders) at the hands of Alan Moore.

Third placed Seven-Up were also in action, they were pushed hard by Govags in an encounter that ended three-all on games and the title challengers dropped 13 points in the process.

The westerners went one better in their next outing, after another share of the games; they beat opponents Outsiders by the closest of margins in a 104-105 result.

Finally the sides in first and third positions went head to head and I don’t think for one moment that anybody could have predicted the outcome as Jacks Off swept aside Seven-Up to record the season’s 16th maximum score to leave their rivals trailing with a total of just 78.

Results for Saturday, December 30: Jacks Off 120 (4), Outsiders 92 (2); Govags 96 (3), Seven-Up 113 (3); Outsiders 104 (3), Govags 105 (3); Seven-Up 78 (0), Jacks Off 126 (6).

The top four sides have now played 12 apiece and the leaders have an impressive margin of 58 points over second placed Mooragh Lakers.

New third position team Outsiders have a slender margin of just four points over Seven-Up, but are in turn now 45 adrift of Lakers. Waiting in the wings are Louie’s Angels in fifth.

As mentioned earlier the leader of the individual merit lost a game, so this leaves Stefan Kelly (Jacks Off) at the top with his unbeaten run intact after 12 wins.

In second spot is Rob Monk (Lakers), just ahead of Matthew Keggen (Jacks Off), with Stuey Garrett now down in fourth. Making up the top six are Brian Kelly (Lakers) and Glynn Hargraves (Jacks Off).

Leading three for the ladies trophy, in this order, are Janet Monk (Lakers), Marg Tasker (Angels) and Jenny Moore (Lakers), while top junior is Austin Hart (Jacks Off).

A gang of 25 took part in a midweek round robin with the pairing of Ken Karran and Alec Taylor being hailed as winners along with the trio of Stefan Kelly, Alan Moore and Lyn Bolton.

Just missing out were Jenny Moore and Kevin Firth in the doubles and Derek Allen, Derek Cadamy and Lil Smith in the triples.

Another session was held on New Year’s Eve with just 17 braving the elements, the victors being Glynn Hargraves, Steve Parker and Ken Karran, along with the duo of James Teare and Peter Kelly.
