Kennish & Waters Win Finch Hill Mixed Doubles

Saturday saw a field of 33 teams of mixed pairs take to the green at Finch Hill on what was a cold but generally sunny day. After losing the main sponsor for this competition earlier in the year Pat Maher came forward to sponsor this enjoyable and well supported competition and it is only thanks to him that Finch Hill was able to host the competition.

One of the novel features introduced by Pat was the lottery to give two pairs their entry fee back and this seemed to be very well received.

With 33 entries we only had one preliminary round match which saw Sid Bolton and Paula Firth come through a tough match against Karl Parker and Helen Withers and showed that they would be serious contenders.

The first round proper saw numerous close matches with the home team of Frank Christian and Iris Kermode just losing out to Celia Joughin and Jay Waters while Les Brookes and Pauline Cowley took a single on the final end to beat Sylvia Kennaugh and Terry Bates 21-20. The first upset nearly came in the match involving Debbie and Evan Leece who led all the way up until the last three ends against Fiona Kennish and Steven Waters but thanks to six points from those three ends it was Kennish and Waters who took the match 21-17. This near shock obviously provided a wake up call for the pairing as you will see later. Expected front runners Glynn Hargraves and Elaine Moore were put under pressure right from the start by Derek and Lynda Cadamy who would lead 20-13 after 13 ends but it took another six ends to get them over the line for a 21-20 win. Preliminary round winners Sid Bolton and Paula Firth were pushed hard by Dave Naughton and Tina Hampson but did just enough to come through 21-18.

Last year’s finalists Philippa and Alec Taylor were tested by the home favourites John Harris and Sue Collier who led 16-13 after 12 ends but a four on the next end from the Taylor’s did the damage and they ran out winners 21-17. Our sponsor Pat Maher partnered by Ann Hon easily overcame Michelle and Pauline Cowley 21-12, while the other home team of Hazel and Peter Hughes were no match for Kim Hargraves and Stefan Kelly. A number of other strong pairings made it through this first round easily and will be mentioned later but I must mention the young players who took part and showed that the future is bright for our sport. I have already mentioned the strong showing of Evan Leece, and for the first time at Finch Hill we saw Megan Hargraves take to the green and then Ryan Hargraves partnered by Victoria Johnson easily came through their first round match.

First up in the second round were Fiona Kennish and Steven Waters although it took them five ends to get the final point for a 21-17 win over Wayne Roberts and Joyce Ogden. Les Brookes and Pauline Cowley overcame the strong pairing of Sue Gawne and Brian Kelly 21-17, as did Matthew Keggen and Lyn Bolton over Mark Kelly and Caroline Whitehead. Philippa and Alec Taylor put in a strong performance to beat the home team of Pat Maher and Ann Hon and Sid Bolton and Paula Firth continued their good run with a 21-11 win over Celia Joughin and Jay Waters. The young partnership of Ryan Hargraves and Victoria Johnson were unable to match the consistent scoring of the experienced pairing of Derek and Lynda Cadamy.  Chris Price and Dave McCabe had each won this competition with different partners in the past and they easily overcame Shannon McMullan and Lee Dawson. The toughest match of the round saw James Teare and Jenny Moore do just enough to beat Kim Hargraves and Stefan Kelly 21-18.

In the quarter finals Matthew Keggen and Lyn Bolton ended the challenge of Les Brookes and Pauline Cowley 21-13 and Steven Waters and Fiona Kennish started to show their true form as they beat Sid Bolton and Paula Firth 21-12. A slow start from Derek and Lynda Cadamy probably cost them their match against Philippa and Alec Taylor who ran out 21-16 winners. A very even match ensued between the pairings of James Teare and Jenny Moore and Chris Price and Dave McCabe. After 18 ends Price and McCabe led 19-17 only to see Teare and Moore score four points on that final end to take the win.

The semi-finals saw Jenny Moore and James Teare take on Matthew Keggen and Lyn Bolton and it was the former that led from the start and with consistent scoring throughout ran out 21-13 winners. Philippa and Alec Taylor started strongly and ran up a 16-10 lead after 10 ends but were only able to score another three points in the next 10 ends as Steven Waters and Fiona Kennish came from behind to win 21-19.

In the final Jenny Moore and James Teare raced into a 18-12 lead after 11 ends but yet another strong comeback saw Fiona Kennish and Steven Waters reel them in and win 21-19 after 18 ends.

Special thanks go to our generous sponsor Pat Maher , to our ladies for keeping everyone fed and watered throughout the afternoon and to all those stewards, measurers and markers who helped make this such a successful competition

Kelly & Waters Win R.H. Green Fours

Sunday saw a quality field of 29 pairs of all ages entered for the R.H. Green Trophy at Finch Hill and they were blessed with a sunny albeit windy day and a very good green.

A number of Island players were entered including last year’s winning pairing of Paul Dunn and Neil Withers who dominated their first round opponents Karl Parker and Dan Smith. John Kennish who has previously won the competition on more than one occasion has been coaching Zain Abideen from Finch Hill at both bowls and snooker recently and paired with him for this competition they would eventually have a run all the way to the quarter finals.

Paul Skelly and Dan McCabe had a good 21-10 win over Kevin Firth and Dave Pease as did Harry Barton and Steve Gregg as they cruised to a 21-8 win over Mark Kneen and Ian Moore. Glynn Hargraves and Jordan Cain looked to be heading for an easy win after winning eight of the first nine ends but it took another seven ends before they got over the line with a 21-15 win over Tony Hart and Lee Dawson. The home grudge match of John Harris and Frank Christian against Paddy Murphy and Dave McCabe proved to be a “no match” as Murphy and McCabe whitewashed their opponents and would eventually make it all the way to the quarter finals. Andy Kennish and Frank Watson were made to work hard as they overcame Jimmy Sansom and Paul Cowley but better things were to come for the winning pair. Steven Waters and Stefan Kelly completed the first round with a 21-14 win against Cliff Clague and Alan Phair.

Paul Dunn and Neil Withers got the second round underway and with some steady scoring overcame Jordan Cain and Glynn Hargraves 21-16. Paul Skelly and Dan McCabe ran out 21-17 winners over Peter Greenlees and Brian Lindsay. One of the closest matches of the day saw Eddie Carlyle and James Teare just edge out Dave Naughton and Steve Hampson 21-20. After a slow start John Kennish and Zain Abideen came back to win against Nathan Hamilton and Tom Kelly while Austin Hart and Alan Moore had a much easier match against George Brew and Brian Corner. Home team of Paddy Murphy and Dave McCabe continued their good form with a 21-14 win over Steve Rundle and Walter McCarthy. Andy Kennish and Frank Watson eased past Harry Barton and Steve Gregg 21-13 while home favourites Peter Hughes and Toni Epifani had no answer to the relentless scoring of Steven Waters and Stefan Kelly going down 21-11.

Amazingly, there were no really close matches in the quarter finals as Paul Dunn and Neil Withers beat Austin Hart and Alan Moore 21-14 and Steven Waters and Stefan Kelly got the better of John Kennish and Zain Abideen with a 21-11 win to complete the top half of the draw. The Finch Hill pairing of Paddy Murphy and Dave McCabe could not match the steady scoring of Paul Skelly and Dan McCabe as the latter won 21-14. The last quarter final saw Andy Kennish and Frank Watson come from 6-9 down to win 21-9 in just 6 ends, including a four pointer.

The semi-finals started with Paul Dunn and Neil Withers taking on Steven Waters and Stefan Kelly and this proved to be one of the closest matches of the day. Dunn and Withers went into a 12-6 lead but Waters and Kelly came back to win the next five ends and with the help of two four pointers  were leading 19-12 but the opposition fought back to level at 20-20 only to see Waters and Kelly edge the match with a single point on the final end. Andy Kennish and Frank Watson had a slightly easier match, thanks to a couple of four pointers, as they ran out winners 21-15 against Paul Skelly and Dan McCabe.

The final was the second longest match of the day running to 20 ends and kept everyone enthralled to the very end. Steven Waters and Stefan Kelly just edged the first 10 ends to lead 13-11 and after 14 ends were leading 19-13 but Andy Kennish and Frank Watson fought back and with the help of a four pointer levelled the match at 20-20 after 19 ends. The last few ends produced some of the best bowls of the day particularly over the longer lengths being played and the match could have gone either way but in that final end it was Steven Waters and Stefan Kelly who got the final single point they needed to take the win 21-20.

The prize presentation was made by Ken Kinrade, Competition Secretary for Finch Hill with the losing semi-finalists receiving £20 Newsbeat vouchers, the Runners Up receiving £50 Newsbeat vouchers and the winners £100 Newsbeat vouchers and the R.H. Green Cup.

Special thanks go to our generous sponsors Newsbeat, to our wonderful ladies for keeping everyone fed and watered throughout the afternoon and to all those stewards, measurers and markers who helped make this a very successful competition.

Zurich International Life Mixed Doubles

Saturday saw a quality field of 35 teams of mixed pairs take to the green at Finch Hill in excellent playing conditions to compete in the Zurich International mixed doubles competition.

With late entries, a pair being scratched and three preliminary matches it was a slow start for many competitors but once we got into the first round it was clear that there were going to be quite a few front runners spread throughout the draw.

First out of the blocks in the top half of the draw was Alan Moore and Shelley Kennish who raced into the quarter finals only dropping five points in three matches which must surely be a record. Philippa and Alec Taylor were also showing good form as they comfortably made their way into the quarter finals with two victories 21-10 and 21-8. Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves had a harder draw as they had to overcome Fiona Kennish and Steve Waters and then James Teare and Jenny Moore to make it into the quarter finals. Sue Gawne and Brian Kelly played well throughout the day but made it into the quarter finals courtesy of wins over Eddie Carlyle and Lil Smith 21-16 and then home favourites Peter and Hazel Hughes 21-15.

In the bottom half of the draw Debbie Leece and Glenn Boland showed good form to make it into the quarter finals with two comfortable wins whilst Wayne Roberts and Joyce Ogden followed them with similar results. Derek Allen and Margaret Tasker eased their way into the quarter finals dropping only seven points in their two matches. Completing the bottom half of the draw was Chris Price and Dave Kelly who had won this event twice in the past three years and they were up against Tina and young Alex Hampson playing in his first competition. What a baptism of fire this was but a great experience also for the youngster and it was great to see Dave chatting to him as they crossed the green together. After the match, which they understandably lost, Alex said he had hoped to win his first match, perhaps not realising the pedigree of their opponents. In their second match Chris and Dave made it into the quarter finals with a 21-11 win over Maureen Payne and Mike Thomas.

In the quarter finals Philippa and Alec Taylor continued their good form with a 21-12 win over Alan Moore and Shelley Kennish. Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves had a closer match with Sue Gawne and Brian Kelly and despite leading 19-12 at one point it took them another eight ends to get over the line 21-19. Wayne Roberts and Joyce Ogden overcame Debbie Leece and Glenn Boland 21-16 in a high scoring rapid fire match. Chris Price and Dave Kelly made quick work of Derek Allen and Margaret Tasker taking just 10 ends to win 21-12.

Philippa and Alec Taylor met Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves in the semi-final and this produced one of the closest matches of the day. The Taylors got off to a great start with a four on the first end and lead most of the first half but after 15 ends it was 20-20 and all to play for. The final end saw Philippa and Alec take the victory with a two.  In the other semi-final Chris Price and Dave Kelly got off to a slow start against Wayne Roberts and Joyce Ogden and after seven ends were 12-9 down but a consistent run of two’s saw them over the line and into the final.

The final was nip and tuck all the way with Philippa and Alec Taylor leading 15-14 at one point but with repeated short ends being played by Chris Price and Dave Kelly and their acceptance of single point ends it was the latter that after eight hours of competition ran out winners for the third time in four years.

The prize presentation was made by Mary Alderson as last year’s winner of the competition on behalf of Finch Hill. Special thanks go to our generous sponsors Zurich International, to our ladies and Frank Christian for keeping everyone fed and watered throughout the afternoon, to John Harris for prepping the green and to all those stewards, measurers and markers who helped make this one of the most successful competitions staged at Finch Hill for many years.

NEWSBEAT R.H. GREEN FOURS

Saturday saw a quality field of 22 pairs of all ages entered for the R H Green Trophy at Finch Hill sponsored by Newsbeat and they were blessed with a cloudy but generally dry day and a very good green.

A number of Island players were entered and last year’s winning pairing of David Bradford and John Kennish had a bye in the first round and had a long wait for their first match despite being drawn first.

Steven Waters and James Teare therefore got the draw underway and quickly overcame Ian Kissack and Rob Corkill 21-10 to set up a second round tie against Bradford and Kennish. At the other end of the draw Neil Withers and Paul Dunn got off to a good start beating Derek Allen and Alec Taylor 21-10.

Other notable first round matches included good results for Peter Greenlees and Mike Ashmole, Les Brookes and Pat Maher, Brian Kelly and Juan Killip, and finally Jimmy Sansom and Shaun Seal with several strong pairings also receiving byes.

The long wait for their first match must have affected John Kennish and David Bradford as they had no answer to the steady scoring of Steven Waters and James Teare who won convincingly 21-11. Walter McCarthy and Luke Hyland showed that they would be a force to be reckoned with as they beat Tony Epifani and Reg Temporaza 21-13. Paul Leece and John Ruscoe had a close match with Peter Greenlees and Mike Ashmole but eventually won 21-18, however the closest match of the day was between Kevin Firth and Eddie Carlyle and Les Brookes and Pat Maher with the former just edging it 21-20. The home team of Paddy Murphy and Paul Dougherty had their chances against Brian Kelly and Juan Killip but eventually lost out 21-15 whilst the young pairing of Glenn Boland and Sam Clague pushed hard against Jimmy Sansom and Shaun Seal only losing out 21-16.

The penultimate match of the second round was an all Finch Hill affair as Peter Hughes and John Smith took on John Harris and Sefton Dent with the former coming through 21-15. The final match of the round saw the in-form pairing of Paul Dunn and Neil Withers take on father and son team of Glynn and Ryan Hargraves but Dunn and Withers easily overcame them and demonstrated why they would be contesting the latter stages of the competition.

As you would expect by the time we reached the quarter finals there were no easy matches and the top players were getting the feel of the green and we were treated to some wonderful bowls. In the top half of the draw the match between Steven Waters and James Teare and Walter McCarthy and Luke Hyland was expected to be very close but in the end McCarthy and Hyland eased to a 21-12 victory. Kevin Firth and Eddie Carlyle did enough against Paul Leece and John Ruscoe to win 21-15 and by a similar score Jimmy Sansom and Shaun Seal beat Brian Kelly and Juan Killip. The closest match of the round saw local favourites Peter Hughes and John Smith just lose out to Paul Dunn and Neil Withers 21-18.

The semi-finals saw Walter McCarthy and Luke Hyland pushed all the way by Kevin Firth and Eddie Carlyle but they just did enough to win 21-18 and it was a similar story in the other match as Paul Dunn and Neil Withers overcame Jimmy Sansom and Shaun Seal 21-16.

In the final, Walter McCarthy and Luke Hyland got off to a great start with a four pointer on the first end and led 13-6 before Paul Dunn and Neil Withers put a score on the board. However, Dunn and Withers levelled the score with the next three ends only to see the opposition bounce back to make the scoreline 17-13 after 10 ends. Unfortunately, McCarthy and Hyland could only muster another two points over the next six ends and Dunn and Withers ran out winners 21-19.

The prize presentation was made by Ken Kinrade, Competition Secretary for Finch Hill with the losing finalists receiving £50 Newsbeat vouchers and the winners £100 Newsbeat vouchers and the R H Green Cup. Special thanks go to our generous sponsors Newsbeat, to our ladies for keeping everyone fed and watered throughout the afternoon and to all the stewards, measurers and markers who helped make this a very successful competition.

Kelly & Bolton Win Inaugural Challenge Cup

Sunday saw a quality field of 54 entered for the inaugural running of drawn doubles competition Douglas Borough Corporation Challenge Cup at Finch Hill. With showers in the morning and further showers and a cold breeze in the early stages of the competition playing conditions were challenging to say the least, although the green was in excellent condition albeit a little slow.

With this drawn format there is less chance of two top players being paired together but even so there were indications from an early stage which would be the most competitive pairings. In the first round Alison Keggen & Lyn Bolton dispensed with Libby Andrade & Caroline Corlett 21-7 while Eddie Carlyle & Rebecca Teare came through 21-15 against Shirley Corrin and Reg Temporaza. Bryan Masterton & Sue Gawne overcame Paul Quirk & Frank Christian 21-11 while Nathan Hamilton & Bernie McPhee came through 21-16 against Kevin Firth & Derek Allen. Stefan Kelly & Sid Bolton had a reasonably comfortable win against Sylvia Kennaugh & Brian Lindsay.

In the second round Rebecca Teare and & Eddie Carlyle continued their winning ways with a 21-16 win over Sam Clague & Steve Waters. Harry Minor & Glynn Hargraves started their campaign with a 21-15 win over Brian Masterton and Sue Gawne. Steve Parker & Austin Hart came from behind to beat Helen Murphy & Gordon Corrin 21-19 and so did Nathan Hamilton & Bernie McPhee with two four pointers in the final two ends against Mike Ashmole & Lynda Clarke. Sam Stannard Duke & Gary Lenton cruised past Hazel Hughes & Terry Bates 21-13 while John Harris & Jenny Moore picked up three points in the last two ends to beat Walter McCarthy & Alan Moore 21-18. Closest match of the day was between Alison Keggen with Lyn Bolton and Frank Watson with our youngest player Ryan Hargraves but with a three pointer on the final end it was the ladies who came through 21-20. Stefan Kelly & Sid Bolton were finding their length and went into a 19-8 lead against Peter Venables and home favourite Paddy Murphy before running out winners 21-13.

In the quarter finals Rebecca Teare & Eddie Carlyle cruised to a 21-12 victory over Steve Parker & Austin Hart whilst in the same part of the draw Stefan Kelly & Sid Bolton scored consistently to beat Sam Stannard Duke and Gary Lenton 21-13. In the bottom half of the draw it was John Harris & Jenny Moore who took the honours against Nathan Hamilton and Bernie McPhee 21-12 while Harry Minor & Glynn Hargraves did just enough to hold off Alison Keggen & Lyn Bolton 21-18.

In the first semi-final Stefan Kelly and Sid Bolton scored strongly and only losing three ends ran out 21-11 winners against Rebecca Teare & Eddie Carlyle. Despite getting off to a good start with a four pointer on the first end John Harris & Jenny Moore could not hold off Harry Minor & Glynn Hargraves who took the game 21-16.

In the final, Stefan Kelly & Sid Bolton continued their strong scoring and in just eleven ends they beat Harry Minor & Glynn Hargraves 21-9.

The prize presentation was made by Deputy Mayor of Douglas, Mr. Ian Clague with the losing semi-finalists each receiving £15, the runners up receiving £40 and the winners £60 and the Douglas Borough Corporation Challenge Cup. Special thanks go to Douglas Corporation for supplying the new Challenge Cup, to Greeba for keeping everyone fed and watered throughout the afternoon, to Peter Hughes and Sefton Dent for stewarding and to all those who helped make this the most successful open competition of the year at Finch Hill.

Zurich International Life Mixed Doubles

Saturday saw a quality field of 26 pairs of all ages entered for the ZURICH sponsored Mixed Doubles competition with a prize fund of £150. The Finch Hill green was in excellent condition despite the exceptionally dry weather in recent weeks and the sunny weather made for very enjoyable playing conditions.

A number of very strong pairings were entered along with a number of newcomers and it was certainly a baptism of fire in the first round for home couple Helen and Paddy Murphy who came up against the winners from the previous two years, Dido Kelly and Chris Price trying to make it a hatrick of wins.

Other notable wins in the first round saw Bernie McPhee and Caroline Corlett convincingly beat Anne and Wayne Stanton while Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves put in a strong performance against Willie and Pauline Cowley to show they would be in contention come the latter stages.
Setting out their stall were Paul and Debbie Leece who overpowered Derek and Lynda Cadamy while home player Peter Hughes and Maureen Payne overcame Seamus Whelan and Voirrey Curphey. One of the most intriguing matches involved home favourites Jan West and newcomer Zain Abideen up against Fiona Kennish playing with youngster Ryan Hargraves. Although the home team got off to a slow start they came back strongly with a number of two point ends and ran out winners 21-18. Another home team of Sefton Dent and Greeba Paramor won by a similar score against Mary Moffatt and another home player Frank Christian. Philippa and Alec Taylor showed that they too would be in contention as they came from behind to beat Lillian Smith and Walter McCarthy helped by one of the few four point ends of the afternoon. Strangest card of the afternoon covered the match involving Stefan Kelly and Kim Hargraves playing against Rob Cowley and Sue Gawne. With the latter pair winning the first end with a two pointer but then seeing Kelly and Hargraves race away with eleven points in the next seven ends they must have thought their day was over but with thirteen points without reply from the final six ends they ran out winners 21-17. Paul Skelly and Rebecca Teare were pushed hard by Sid and Lyn Bolton but eventually just did enough to win 21-20. Wayne Roberts and Tracey Moore must have thought they were out when trailing 14-20 against Karl and Catherine Parker but heavy scoring in the final four ends also saw them over the line 21-20.

With a number of byes in the first round there were still players of note to take the stage and so it was with Mike Hargaves and Joyce Ogden who overcame Bernie McPhee and Caroline Corlett. Similarly benefiting from a bye was home player Dave McCabe and a rejuvenated Mary Alderson who put in a strong performance to overcome Paul Skelly and Rebecca Teare. Another bye beneficiary was the team of Bernard Thackrah and Caroline Whitehead but they were caught cold by the strong pairing of Paul and Debbie Leece who lead all the way to the line.

Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves continued their good form to beat Wayne Roberts and Tracey Moore. Philippa and Alec Taylor showed their metal when they got stuck on 16 for seven ends but came through with five points in the final three ends. The current champions Dido Kelly and Chris Price cruised into the quarter finals against Rob Cowley and Sue Gawne. James Teare and Jenny Moore raced away in their match winning the first six ends to lead 17-6 against Jan West and Zain Abideen. The latter pairing came back strongly but couldn’t hold off Teare and Moore who would eventually make it to the final. Home favourite Peter Hughes and Maureen Payne were in imperious form as they overcame the other home team of Sefton Dent and Greeba Paramor.

Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves looked as if they would go all the way as they easily dispensed with Paul and Debbie Leece in just eight ends. Strong scoring in the last six ends saw Phillipa and Alec Taylor beat Peter Hughes and Maureen Payne while James Teare and Jenny Moore cruised into the semi-finals against Mike Hargraves and Joyce Ogden. The tightest and longest match of the competition saw Dave McCabe and Mary Alderson put out last year’s champions Dido Kelly and Chris Price.

In the semi-finals James Teare and Jenny Moore got off to a slow start but finished strongly to end the challenge of Philippa and Alec Taylor. In the other semi-final Dave McCabe and Mary Alderson were very much on form as they restricted Elaine Moore and Glynn Hargraves to scoring on just four ends to ease into the final.

The final saw McCabe and Alderson carry on where they left off in the semi-final with some exquisite bowls as Mary put in a number of delicate touches on the jack and when needed Dave was deadly on his strikes. James Teare and Jenny Moore could not re-kindle the form they had shown throughout the competition and had no answer to the power and consistency of the opposition as Dave McCabe and Mary Alderson won the final in just 12 ends.

The prize presentation was made by Ken Kinrade, Competition Secretary for Finch Hill with the losing semi-finalists each receiving £20, the runners up receiving £40 and the winners £70 and the Mixed Doubles Cup.

Special thanks go to our generous sponsors Zurich, to all who helped in the kitchen throughout the afternoon, to Kevin Skillicorn for stewarding, Malcolm Black and Arthur Halsall for measuring and to all those who helped make this a very successful competition.

Kennish & Bradford Retain R.H. Green Fours

Saturday saw a quality field of 30 pairs of all ages entered for the R H Green Trophy at Finch Hill and were blessed with a fine sunny day and a very fast green.

A number of Island players were entered and last year’s winning pairing of David Bradford and John Kennish got off to a strong start winning 21-9 against Kevin Firth and Terry Bates. Steve
Waters and Dido Kelly also won by a similar score against newcomers Bryan Masterton and Brian Murphy. Closest match of the day was between the home pairings of Dave McCabe and Frank Christian who just took the win 21-20 against Peter Hughes and Arthur Halsall. Other front runners included Dave and Steve Kelly who were pushed hard to a 21-18 win by Peter Collins and Wayne Roberts, whilst Stefan Kelly and Glynn Hargraves had a comfortable win 21-13 against home
players John Harris and newcomer Paddy Murphy who has only been playing for a few weeks. Alan Moore and James Teare showed that they would be strong contenders as they eased past Lee Dawson and David Pease 21-14. Paul Dunn and Neil Withers had a good match against Bernie McPhee and Steve Crampton and eventually won 21-18.

In the second round we thought we were in for a shock result as John Kennish and David Bradford went 10-16 down to Stuey Garrett and Ian Moore but eventually hauled them back and ran out 21-19 winners. Dave and Steve Kelly picked up a bit of form and convincingly beat Les Brookes and Mark Kramer 21-9 while Steve Waters and Dido Kelly beat Adam Kelly and David Proctor by the same score. The eldest competitor and the newest newcomer Bill Cairns and John Smith respectively found the competition tough as they lost 21-6 to Stefan Kelly and Glynn Hargraves. The home pairing of Dave McCabe and Frank Christian took advantage of local knowledge as they beat Walter McCarthy and Stephen Rundle 21-13. Also showing good form were Alan Moore and James Teare as they beat Eddie Carlyle and Nathan Hamilton 21-14, and Paul Dunn and Neil Withers as they beat Brian Kelly and Juan Killip 21-15. The closest and longest match in terms of ends saw Ian Kissack and Mike Hargraves ease past Derek Allen and Alec Taylor with a two on the final end to win 21-19.

As you would expect by the time we reached the quarter finals there were no easy matches and the top players were getting the feel of the green and we were treated to some wonderful bowls.
In the top half of the draw Alan Moore and James Teare had a good 21-13 win against Paul Dunn and Neil Withers whilst John Kennish and David Bradford did just enough to beat Steve Waters and Dido Kelly 21-17. The bottom half of the draw saw the son beat the father as Stefan Kelly and Glynn Hargraves beat Ian Kissack and Mike Hargraves 21-15, and a strong performance from Dave and Steve Kelly saw them beat home favourites Dave McCabe and Frank Christian 21-12.

The semi-finals saw John Kennish and David Bradford take on Alan Moore and James Teare and once again the quality of play from Kennish and Bradford was just too much for Moore and Teare as they ran out comfortable winners 21-14. The other semi-final between Stefan Kelly and Glynn Hargraves and Dave and Steve Kelly was a much closer affair with neither team able to take a firm grip of the match, but with a three on the final end it was the Kelly’s who took the win 21-19.

In the final, last year’s winners Kennish and Bradford won the first two ends but the Kelly’s recovered to lead 13-11 after eight ends. This only seemed to spur on Kennish and Bradford as they made two on the next end and went on to add another six points in the next four ends using a
variety of lengths and then with a point on each of the last two very short ends they stormed home 21-14 to retain their title.

The prize presentation was made by Ken Kinrade, Competition Secretary for Finch Hill with the losing finalists receiving £50 Newsbeat vouchers and the winner’s £100 Newsbeat vouchers and the R H Green Cup.

Special thanks go to our generous sponsors Newsbeat, to all who helped in the kitchen throughout the afternoon, to Kevin Skillicorn for stewarding and Malcolm Black for measuring and to all those who helped make this a very successful competition.

R H Green Fours

Saturday saw the welcome return of the above competition, kindly sponsored by Newsbeat, and a quality field of 16 pairs took to the green in what turned out to be better than expected weather conditions.

A number of Island players were entered and made quick work of their first round matches, particularly the pairings of Dave Bradford and Glynn Hargraves, and Bob Clark and Jordan Cain who both won 21-5. In the other first round matches, last minute entrants Peter Hughes and Peter Partington were unlucky to lose 20-21 to Ian Kissack and Mike Hargraves; similarly Grahem Moore and Les Warburton lost 21-19 to Neil Withers and Paul Dunn who struggled to get over the line as they took 4 ends to get the final point.

In the quarter finals, Dave Bradford and Glynn Hargraves took on Neil Withers and Paul Dunn in what was expected to be a close match. In the early stages this was the case but from the sixth end it was Withers and Dunn who found their length and with the help of 2 and 3 point ends they quickly raced to a 21-10 victory. Arthur Halsall and Tony Epifani came good against Kevin Mort and John Lightfoot with a 21-15 win and a similar scoreline took Bob Clark and Jordan Cain past Ian Kissack and Mike Hargraves. The last quarter final match between Derek Allen and Dave McCabe, and James Teare and Alan Moore was much closer with the scores level at 16 each after 14 ends but it was Teare and Moore who made the better finish to win 21-18.

The semi finals saw Arthur Halsall and Tony Epifani on home ground get off to a good start but they couldn’t match the 2 and 3 pointers thrown at them by Neil Withers and Paul Dunn who eventually romped home 21-9. The second semi final was similar as James Teare and Alan Moore won the first four ends to lead 11-5 against Bob Clark and Jordan Cain but once again it was the 2 and 3 point ends that helped Clark and Cain win 21-17.

On the basis of their earlier performances the final was eagerly awaited but it took Neil Withers and Paul Dunn 6 ends to get off the mark and with Bob Clark and Jordan Cain playing some exquisite bowls and scoring a 3 and a couple of 4’s the match was all over in 10 ends with Cain and Jordan running out worthy winners by 21 points to 8.

The prize presentation was made by Peter Partington, Chairman of Finch Hill Bowling Club and Ken Kinrade, Competition Secretary with the losing semi finalists receiving £20 Newsbeat vouchers, the losing finalists £50 Newsbeat vouchers and the winners £100 Newsbeat vouchers and the R H Green Cup.

Special thanks go to our generous sponsors Newsbeat, to Merve Sayle for preparation of the green and to Lyn Kinrade and Hazel Hughes who kept everyone fed and watered throughout the afternoon and to all those who helped make this a very successful competition.
