On Saturday 1st July the Ladies Championships were held at Port Erin Green. 

Jenny Moore took the title on a very tricky green, beating Rebecca Teare in the final 21-18.

The day started with 17 entries. In the quarter final stages Clare cooper (marown) just came through 21-20 against her team mate Debbie Leece, Janet Monk (Mooragh Park) won 21-12 to Kim Hargraves (South Ramsey). The finalists booked their places with Rebecca Teare overcoming fellow marown player Charlotte Clark 21-9 and Jenny Moore ended Jayne Smith’s (marown) hopes of a final winning 21-19.

The Semi Finals saw a marown clash of cooper and Teare with rebecca just edging the lead enough to win 21-17. Jenny dominated her game against Janet winning 21-7.

The final was a much slower game and after 16 ends was level on points at 9-9. But after another 5 ends Jenny was leading 14-11 as Rebecca was unable to claim any 2’s at all in this game. By the 29th end at 20-14 Jenny just needed 1 more point, But Rebecca wasn’t about to let her take it easily and dug in deep to win the next 4 ends 20-18. On the next end Jenny claimed a single to end the game at 21-18 and claim her Isle of Man Ladies Championship title. 

The presentation was made by the ladies Association Competition Secretary Christine Holland. Jenny and Christine thanked Ann Gale, who was unable to attend for sponsoring the Competition and  everyone who entered, also Port St Mary Club for providing measurers and refreshments for the Day.

The next Competition Held by the Ladies Association is on 15th July and is the Girls Junior Merit at Douglas Bowling Club at 9.30am, also on the same day starting at 1pm is the ladies Millennium 4’s Team Competition. Entries for both events close on Friday 14th at 10pm. All entries can be made on the website or by emailing [email protected]

On Friday 16th June Peel Sunset hosted Marown B. The 2 young Cooper girls Grace and Emily are definitely following in their mothers footsteps with a fine performance from them both. The Peel side took 5-4 games. But with some excellent scoring by the Marown players, they took the win 146-173.

Elsewhere the closest game of the night was Port Erin 146 V 159 Ballaugh (4-5). There was lots of close games on this green for both teams. Maria Dimsdale and Michelle Cubbon both won by single figures.

After a busy Festival week league matches were played on the evening of finals day, I’m sure most of the ladies just wanted to go home and put their feet up with a nice cool glass of something refreshing. All teams reached an impressive 3 figure score.

Port Erin 141 v 137 Marown B (5-4) This was the closest game of the night. Marown’s youngster Grace Cooper with an 21-5 win, Rosemary Winkle 21-8 and Joyce Ogden 21-4 wins. On the Southside Caroline Whitehead and Jenny Cain both won 21-8 and port Erin took the win by just 4 points.

Castletown B travelled North to play Mooragh Park, where the northerners took the win 154 v 137 (5-4) Grayse Blencoe and Janet Monk both winning to single figures for the Park. As did Joy Stevens for Castletown.

Wednesday 31st May saw the Ladies Open age League played. The TT practice sessions meant that the Marown A team Captain Helen Withers was busy on Duty and unable to play at the marown derby. 

This left the A team bringing in the subs and it was a lovely evening, except for the biting midges. 

Debbie Leece, Clare Cooper and Lyn Bolton for the A team all won by single figures, as did Elaine Dewhurst for the B team. The rest of the games were all close and the B team weren’t going to let them have an easy win. Final score Marown B 119 v Marown A 177 (1-8).

Port St Mary 160 hosted Castletown B 132 (5-4) Mother and Daughter Joy Stevens and Angela Quayle (Castletown B) both had close 21-19 wins. But with Katy Williams, Nicola Cain and Tricia Bull (PSM) all winning by single figures, it was enough to give the Port St Mary ladies the overall match win.

Peel Sunset had the difficult journey to Ballaugh with the roads closed around the TT course. Most of the games were very close and could have gone either way. Julie Reilly and Cath Harvey (Ballaugh) both had good wins of 21-6 and 21-4. With a final match result Ballaugh 177 v 137 Peel Sunset (6-3).

Castletown A played their usual top form at home against Port Erin. Jean Thackrah was the only Port Erin winner. The Castletown team kept all the opponents scores low enough for them to win the match 184 v 101 (8-1).

Nobles just had to cross the town to defeat Douglas. The newly formed Nobles team are certainly one to watch out for in the second half of the fixtures. They played the Villa green well and were only 9 points off a full house. Douglas 124 v 180 Nobles (3-6).

The northern teams saw Mooragh Park 113 v 171 South Ramsey (2-7). Victoria Johnson had a close encounter with Gillian Morgan taking the 21-20 win for the park side. Whilst Elaine Moore also had a battle with Madison McCullen winning 21-19 for the South side. Janet Monk took the second win for Mooragh Park 21-4. The remaining South players all won with good wins leaving them as match winners and remaining a close second on the League Table. 

The Ladies Over 60’s games are back on Thursday 15th June and the next set of Open age League games are due to commence on Friday 16th June.

Castletown B Draw at home to Douglas in open age

In the ladies Open Age League the Southern side Castletown B welcomed Douglas to their green where they had an extremely close match. Castletown won 5-4 on games with the final match result a draw 139 v 139. Douglas won 3 of their games to single figures helping them to secure a draw.

The top score of the night was South Ramsey  180 v 124 Port St Mary (8-1). South Ramsey’s Jenny Moore won 21-3 and Kim Hargraves 21-8, helping keep the team at the top end of the table and just 13 points off the current leaders Castletown A.

It was a clash at the top of the table for last year’s league winners Castletown A. Who welcomed Marown A to their green on a midweek Battle. On paper this was always going to be a close encounter and that proved correct. There were lots of supporters around the green supporting both teams. After the first 4 games off Marown were leading by just 20 points. Castletown played the home green well and with the remaining 5 games got the points back to finish the game level 153 v 153 to receive a draw. Castletown A 153 v 153 Marown A (4-5)

Port Erin 139 v 136 Peel Sunset (6-3) After winning 6 games the Port Erin side just managed to take the win by 3 points after Peel Sunset traveled south and managed to take their 3 wins all to single figures 5-21, 5-21 and 3-21. Di Benson and Voirrey Curphey’s 21-8 wins helped the Southern side protect their win. The next games are back to Friday evening 26th May.
