Essie Quayle Ladies’ Singles

There was a field of 31 for the Essie Quayle ladies’ singles played at Peel on Saturday 2 September. The weather was sunny, although a cold breeze got up during the afternoon, and the green was running well.

There were some very close matches, particularly in the first two rounds where several matches went to 21-18 or 21-19.

Some notable performances in the early stages saw Win Collister come through against Joyce Kelly in the first round and mary Alderson in the second and Shirley Corrin coming through to meet her in the semi-finals after seeing off Maureen Payne and Lyn Bolton.

Quarter-finals: Philippa Taylor 21, Margaret Tasker 15; Paula Firth 21, Lil Smith 16; Shirley Corrin 21, Win Collister 17; Mary Moffatt 21, Celia joughin 10.
The first semi-final was close with Philippa taking an early lead being 13-10 ahead after six ends. Paula then won the next five ends to make it 16-13 in her favour, before Philippa took five ends to reach “all but”. A further single for Paula was not enough, Philippa going through 21-17.

In the other semi-final Shirley found a mark along the edge of the green which she played beautifully. Mary, like Shirley’s opponents throughout the afternoon, had no answer.

Semi-finals: Philippa Taylor 21, Paula Firth 17; Shirley Corrin 21, Mary Moffatt 9

In the final it was Philippa who found a mark, across the crown, that Shirley could not master, coming through to win 21-8.

The presentation was made by club president, Heather Horsburgh, who thanked those who had entered and those spectators who had stayed to the end. She also thanked all those who had helped in any way with the smooth running of the afternoon.

Manx Ladies in the September Festival

Another September Festival has come and gone, with the weather being unkind for most of the week, although we did for once have a dry and sunny finals day.

In the main competition ten of our ladies got through to the last 32 played at Nobles 1 on Thursday afternoon, but despite some good performances only four made it through to the last sixteen.

Caroline Parker had played well all week and continued to fight in the last 16, eventually coming through 21-17 against Sally Clee (Wrockwardine Wood), while Mary Moffatt faced Julie Pearce (Meole Brace), who had been impressive all week, just losing out 21-19. Lyn Bolton was involved in a ding-dong battle with Dawn Bray (Ossett Flying Horse), taking the game 21-20 to progress to the quarter-final, while Helen Martin lost out 21-16 to Lynsey Gorman (NBQV).

In the quarter-finals Caroline came up against the eventual winner, Angela Gaut, and found it was just one game too far, going out 21-11, while Lyn met festival perennial Veronica Lyon (Beechams Unison), and had another close encounter, getting through to the semi-finals 21-19.

Lyn’s progress was halted by Anita Richardson (Hoylake and Melrose) who went through 21-11 to meet Angela Gaut in the final, where the two of them had a nail-biting battle, Angela taking the trophy 21-20.

Congratulations go to all the Manx ladies’, particularly Lyn Bolton who picked up the Blanche Kaye Trophy for the best Manx Lady.

Thursday morning saw the final stages of the Ladies’ Tourism Competition with three Manx ladies’ reaching the quarter-finals. Unfortunately two of them faced each other, with Elaine Moore pipping Philippa Taylor 21-20, while Margaret Tasker also had a close match against Julie Pearce before going out 21-20. In the semi-final it was Elaine’s turn to face Julie Pearce, the Meole Brace lady going through to the final 21-19. It had been a morning of close matches and that continued into the final where Alison Cotton, facing club-mate Julie, came through to win 21-20.

In the Open Doubles Elaine Moore and Kim Hargraves reached the quarter-finals, where they went out 11-7 to the eventual runners-up, Craig Grant (Thongsbridge) and Duncan Reeves (Netherton Cons), while in the VisitIsleofman.com Flyer, Helen Martin went out in the semi-final to Michael Coupe (Hoghton BC).

In the quarter-finals of the Ladies’ Doubles Caroline Parker and Veronica Lyon beat Marjorie Haigh (Hightown Sports) and Joyce Jones (Syke BC) 11-6 to set up a semi-final meeting with Lynda Cadamy and Sandra Beveridge (Lansil) who came through their quarter-final against Debbie Leece and Carleen Doody-Millington (Meole Brace) 11-7.

In the semi-final it was Lynda and Sandra who progressed to the final, 11-4, where they lost to Jacqueline Owen (Whitefield BC) and Eileen Pye (Acregate) 11-7..

JMS Veteran’s Shield Final

The final of the JMS Veterans Shield was held at Finch Hill on Thursday 17 August. The two teams involved were Marown and Nobles, both playing off their home handicap of +20, which made it a straight match-up with the handicaps not influencing the results.

The weather stayed fair and there were a good number of spectators present hoping to see some exciting play and in this they were not disappointed..

The first three games off saw a clear win for Nobles, courtesy of Sylvia Kennaugh, which was almost balanced by a good win by Philippa Taylor for Marown. The third game had been a real battle with Viv Cook coming through 21-19 against Shirley Whelan, giving Nobles a lead of just six points at the half-way mark. The second set of three games were all close, but went the way of Nobles, although the Marown ladies fought well with two 18’s and a 16, giving them the titl , and the trophy, 135-118.

The presentation was made by Janet Shilling, who sponsors the event. She thanked Finch Hill for the use of their facilities and Pat Robertson for the scones! She also praised the standard of play, with some great ends and spectacular bowling. Winning captain, Josie Harding, said that she hadn’t expected to win but everyone had enjoyed the experience and they were determined to retain the title next year.

Port St Mary finished the season in a blaze of glory when they recorded a maximum at Onchan, with seven of their nine wins being to single figures, in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored league on Friday 18 August. Only two of the home players put up any resistance with Jo Smith and Sue Gawne both reaching 17 against Katy Williams and Val Macfarlane respectively. Last week South Ramsey leap-frogged over Castletown for second place, and with both teams reaching the same score, 165, they remain in that order. South Ramsey travelled to Ballaugh who had two winners in Barbara Graham, to single figures, and Christine Macdonald, while Port Erin also had two winners against Castletown. Lynda Cadamy, to single figures, and Jean Thackrah won their games while Jackie Elliott almost added a third losing out 20-21 to Kath Kinley. Trend sponsored over 60’s league Tuesday 15 August

The final match in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league was played on Tuesday 15 August. The positions at the top of the table had been already decided, with once again Port St Mary A taking the title followed by Peel Sunset in second place. The westerner’s final surge, when they dropped a total of four points in four games, was too little too late but did keep the difference between the two teams down to 47 points. Our congratulations go to Val Macfarlane, Port St Mary A, for winning the Merit, and commiserations to Mary Moffatt, who, as in the night league, was level on points scored but lost out on points against.

Peel lost out on a maximum at Ballaugh when a tough tussle between Mary Simmonds and Pat Robertson resulted in a 21-20 win for the home player, while at Onchan Sylvia Maddrell spoiled the party for Onchan when she won her game against Joyce Gardiner. The two winners for Port St Mary B at Port Erin were Roma Ware and Chris Holland, each winning to 18, while Pauline Worrall nearly levelled the score on games when she lost out 19-21 to Sylvia Shelbourne. Mavis Dearden Supplementary County Championship

A team representing the Isle of Man travelled to Winnington Park, near Northwich in Cheshire, to play in the Mavis Dearden Supplementary County Championship on Sunday 20 August.
The competition consiste of eight teams made up from the the second and third placed teams in the four sections of the county championship. A withdrawal of one of those teams led to an invitation for the Isle of Man to participate.

The eight teams were split into two groups, each group being played as a round-robin. The Isle of Man was in a group containing the holders, Burton and District, the 2013 winners North Lancashire and Fylde, and Warwick and Worcester. The green they played on was small and rectangular and it took some players a while to get used to it.
In their first game, against holders Burton and District, the team had three winners, Chris Price, Debbie Leece and Jayne Kneen, but despite creditable performances from the other five lost out 136-161 on points.

The second game, against Warwick and Worcester, was drawn on games, the four winners for the island being Mary Moffatt, Lynda Cadamy, Jayne Kneen and Joyce Kelly, but won on points 151-140.
The game against North Lancs. And Fylde was also drawn on games, but unfortunately the English side had the advantage on points 149-146. The four Manx winners were Heike Perry, Lynda Cadamy, Debbie Leece and Jayne Kneen.

With Burton and District beating North Lancs and Fylde 159-141, and Warwick and Worcester 155-149 they headed the group and progressed to the final. Warwick and Worcester beat North Lancs and Fylde 159-141 leaving the final group table:
Burton and District 461; Warwick and Worcester 448; IOM 433; North Lancs and Fylde 421.

The island girls proved that they are a force to be reckoned with, and all put up some very strong performances.

They thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and hope the opportunity to participate may come again in furture years

Trend sponsored over 60’s league Tuesday 8 August and Thursday 10 August

Peel Sunset posted a maximum in the Trend sponsored over 60’s ladies’ league on Tuesday 8 August when they visited Douglas. Joyce Kelly and Heather Horsburgh won their games to single figures, but there was more resistance from other Douglas players, three of whom reached 17.Frances Radcliffe was the fly in the ointment for Port St Mary B as her 21-20 win over Roma Ware denied the visitors a full house. Maureen Lacey almost gave Mooragh Park a second game when she reached 19 against Chris Holland. Castletown won five of their six games, but their party was spoiled by Gwen Tuck winning her game for Breagle. It was a similar story at Port St Mary A. They won five games but were denied a maximum by Muriel Cain, while Maureen Payne was in devastating form at Onchan to prevent the home side being white-washed by Marown. Ballaugh managed two wins on their visit to Port Erin, but with the home side all scoring at least 16 and winning two games to single figures they finished with a strong points advantage.
Thursday 10 August
Mavis Franks won a close and exciting game against Cath Parker 21-20 to deny Peel Sunset their second maximum of the week, while Onchan fell short of a full house when Muriel Cain won her game for Villa. Joan Murphy almost gave the home side a second game, losing out 20-21 to Lynda Clarke. Port St Mary A made the short journey to Breagle where they won five games, two to single figures, while Jenny Cain was the lone winner for the home side. Mooragh Park had two winners at Marown, in Moira Anderson and Maureen Lacey while the home side won three of their four games to single figures. Douglas had a successful foray down south winning 4-2 on games, although there were some very close encounters with Dot Mylchreest losing out 19-21 to Kath King and Chris Holland getting even closer reaching 20 against Sue Caley. Nobles won four games against Castletown, the two winners for the visitors being Sue Peach and Ann Hollingworth, while Joy Stephens reached 19 against Pat Dacre.

C Tarleton Hodgson Ladies’ League Friday 11 August

With the Marown v Onchan match being postponed due to Philippa Taylor being off island with Joyce Ogden to represent us in the Dorothy Piearce Pairs, there were only five matches played in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored league on Friday 11 August.
With only one match left to play, Port St Mary look safe in top spot, although it is still mathematically possible for them to be overtaken. The real battle is for second place where, having leap-frogged over Castletown last week, South Ramsey consolidated their lead with a maximum against Purt le Moirrey. Castletown are just 19 points behind in third place, so the minor placings are still up for grabs.
South Ramsey were taking no prisoners when they faced Purt le Moirrey, winning all nine games, five of them to single figures. Linda Dawson was top scorer for the visitors, reaching 16 against Jill Quayle. Castletown were also in strong form posting 6 wins, three to single figures and two twenties with Heike Perry losing out to Debbie Leece and Marie Ashurst to Lin Ruscoe. Nobles’ other winner was Paula Firth. Phil Dobson and Jackie Elliott were the two winners for Port Erin at Port St Mary, who won four of their seven games to single figures. Ballaugh had the better of their match against Mooragh Park, winning 6-3 on games, although it could have been closer as two of the matches went all the way with Shannon McMullen just losing out 20-21 to Jane Teare, and Madison McMullen being pipped by Ellie Faragher. Peel Sunset were, unfortunately, two players short when they came from the west to face Douglas. However the seven who did play were “magnificent.”, dropping just two points in the games played, and managing to win the match by six points.
