Wednesday saw 31 members take to the green for the Round Robin, meaning a split into two groups. The doubles playing with black jacks and triples playing with yellow jacks. 10 members made up the doubles and the winning pair were Derek Allen and Terry Bates who scored 38 points, whilst the runners up Lil Smith and Margie Tasker scored 32. 21 members played in the triples and Willie Corkhill, Julian Rothera and Sue Kerruish scored 41 points leaving the runners up Steve Parker, Bryan Corner and Tricia Bull in second on 32.

I have been asked why I am not reporting the scores using the new system voted in at the AGM, so from now on I will report the results with the added 2 games to the winner.

Three teams were playing on Saturday the 20^th, Outsiders, All But and Seven Up.

Outsiders who are currently second in the league took on All But who are third in the league for the first game and Outsiders took four wins, with All But securing two. Brian Colquitt was one of All Buts winners who kept Frank Watson to 19.

All But then took on Seven Up who are currently fourth in the league and unfortunately did not manage a win, but the closest game again involving Brian Colquitt, but this time he was kept to 18 by Andy Kennish. 

Seven Up next took on Outsiders and won two out of the six games, the closest being that of the doubles which was Paula Firth and Dougie Allan of Seven Up keeping Kevin Firth and Tony Dugdale to 18.

Sunday the 21^st saw fifth place WALOB take on current leaders Louie’s Angels, and win two games out of the six. The doubles Joyce Ogden and Sid Bolton took victory from Tricia Bull and Caroline Whitehead by one point, whilst Lyn Bolton held Rebecca Teare to 18.

Seventh place Bits n Bobs took on ninth place Castletown Cannons and a good battle commenced, each side winning three games, but Bits n Bobs took the match by one point. Franz ten Donkelaar held Sue Kerruish to 18, Sue Collier kept Peter Curtis to 19, but likewise the Cannons took two wins by close margins. Joy Stephens holding Sue McCourt to 18 and George Peach keeping Gill Morgan to 19.

Louie’s Angels then took on Bits n Bobs, and did not get a clean sweep; Bits n Bobs took two games from them the closest score being Sue McCourt keeping Tricia Bull to 18.

Cannons then took on WALOB and won two games, it was a real family affair. The best scoring games were when Sue Peach kept Toby Hart to 18, but Tony Hart held George Peach to 17.

This week’s Pronto Plumbing sponsored winter league bowls got underway on Wednesday with the Round Robin attracting 32 members. The groups were split into triples and doubles, the black jacks group were doubles and the yellow triples.  The winners by nine points in the doubles were Derek Allen and David Clucas with 42, leaving Steve Parker and Brian Colquitt in second place on 33.  

The second group playing with yellow jacks was won with a 12 points margin by Alan Phair, Jane Lothian and Dougie Allan scoring 42, with Sid McKnight, Lil Smith and Terry Bates coming second with 30 points.

On Sunday the 14^th of November, Mooragh Lakers took on Castletown Cannons and secured wins in all six games played. The games that were most closely fought were by Alan Phair who scored 18 against Brian Kelly and Barbara Young who also scored 18 against Janet Monk. Cannons second match was against Parkers and again the Cannons had all six games taken from them.

Louie’s Angels took on Parkers for their first match and won four out of the six games. The closest win for Angels was by Rebecca Teare who held Mike Alexander to 20, and the highest scoring game with a win for the Parkers was Neil Dunwell who kept Tricia Bull to 18.

The final match of the day was Lakers against Angels. The Angel’s managed to win five games but only dropped a point from the maximum 126 available. The closest scoring games were won by the Lakers doubles Alison Kearsley and Sue Gawne who took the win by one point from Tricia Bull and Caroline Whitehead. Margie Tasker for Angels beat Walter McCarthy to nineteen.

Saturday’s matches saw three teams battle it out. Seven Up took on Castletown Cannons and won five out of the six games played. The win by Cannons was by Alan Phair who beat Dougie Allan to eighteen. Cannons then took on Louie’s Angels and again won one game, this time it was Joy Stephens who held Caroline Whitehead to nineteen points, whilst the other close win was Margie Tasker for Angels keeping Barbara Young to eighteen. Then the final match of the day was Louie’s Angels taking on Seven Up. The Angel’s won all six games to achieve the maximum score of 126. The closest scoring games were won by Margie Tasker and Rebecca Teare, beating Mark Kelly to nineteen and Andy Kennish to eighteen respectively.

Sunday saw Nobles Nutters taking on All But, and the Nutters taking two games with the closest being won by young Alex Hampson as he beat Lil Smith to eighteen. Castletown Corkers were playing Outsiders and had one win, David Faragher managed to hold Elaine Moore to twenty points. All But then took on Corkers and won five out of the six games, again a battle was fought between Willie Corkill and Sarah Morgan, with victory by three points going to Willie. Outsiders took five wins when playing the Nutters, with the doubles having the closest scoring game Elaine Moore and Frank Watson held Juan Qualtrough and Tina Hampson to nineteen.

There are no fixtures on Saturday, 13^th November, so there will be a round robin being held. Also, I need to mention that from now on all entries for the round robin sessions will close at 12.50.

Entries are now being taken at Nobles 3 green for the J&M Lee charity doubles, which will now take place one weekend later than originally planned, with the new dates being December 18 and 19. 

This week’s Outdoor Winter Bowls League sponsored by Pronto Plumbing was somewhat shorter than expected. 

The weather meant that the usual midweek Round Robin did not take place.

Saturday 30^th of October saw Outsiders, Bits n Bobs and All But battle it out for the second time this season, with Seven Up also playing.

Bits n Bobs took on Outsiders for their first game and didn’t manage to field a full team. Winning a game was a real struggle for Bits n Bobs, and the only player to come close was Sue Collier who scored nineteen points against Ben Dugdale, a deserved match win to Outsiders.

On the green at the same time were Seven Up playing All But. All But secured four wins leaving Seven Up taking two. The closest scoring game was when Lil Smith from All But held Philippa Taylor to seventeen points.

The second half of the afternoon saw Outsiders taking on Seven Up, and the number of games won by each team was three. Jenny Moore from Outsiders had the closest scoring game against Kevin Quirk, Jenny kept Kevin to eighteen. Seven Up took the match on points.

Bits n Bobs had a better game against All But, managing to win four games, although the points worked in All Buts favour to square the match. There were two close games, both seeing victory to Bits n Bobs, they were Celia Joughin scoring nineteen against Geoff Collier and Willie Corkill scoring seventeen against Gill Morgan.

Sunday’s games were abandoned after about half an hour due to a number of heavy downpours making the green unplayable. The fixtures have been rescheduled for Saturday, December 11.

Week three got under way with the round robin on Wednesday with fewer entries than the previous two weeks. There were only twelve members who played as doubles and the winners were Margie Tasker and her partner Peter Corlett, and in second place was Doug Allan and Gillian Jopson.

On Saturday the 23^rd of October WALOB took on Nobles Nutters and won four out of the six games, the closest score being Sid Bolton who held Jay Elliott to twenty. Bits n Bobs won five out of the six games against Castletown Corkers the closest being won by Franz ten Donkelaar who beat Lily Gawne to nineteen. The Nutters took on Bits n Bobs for the second game, with each team winning three games, unfortunately Bits n Bobs couldn’t take a second victory as they were pipped to the post by five points. The closest win was by Jane Lothian who was helping Bits n Bobs out, she managed to take the win from Mark Bradshaw who scored twenty. When Corkers took on WALOB they were unable to win a game meaning WALOB scored the maximum 126 available. The closest scoring game being won by Kim Hargraves who kept Davey Faragher to nineteen points.

On Sunday the 24^th Mooragh Lakers took on Castletown Cannons and won five out of the six games, leading to them taking the match, the closest game being taken by Janet Monk who kept George Peach to nineteen. Parkers took two games from Louie’s Angels, although the tightest game was won by Sid McKnight of the Parkers who took the win by one point from Tricia Bull. Louie’s Angels won their second match against the Lakers, again winning four games. Matthew Keggen beat Walter McCarthy to eighteen, whilst Janet Monk of the Lakers kept Margie Tasker to nineteen. The Cannons managed to win one game against Parkers although it was Jo Smith from the Parkers who had the closest fought battle but kept Joy Stephens to eighteen.

The winners of the doubles group were Derek Allen and Brian Colquitt who took the win by five points from Trish Bull and Brian Aspen. The triples winners also by five points were Dougie Allan, Paul Callister and Janet Monk who beat Billy Blair, Margie Tasker and Peter Kelly.

Saturday the 16^th October saw four teams battling it out. Nobles Nutters took on Mooragh Lakers and won three out of the six games. Terry Bates held Alison Kearsley to seventeen and Mark Bradshaw took the win leaving Walter McCarthy on twenty.  Parkers took on Seven Up and managed to secure a win for two of the games, one of which Mike Thomas held Philippa Taylor to twenty. Another close game was secured by Dougie Allan of Seven Up keeping Colin Spence to twenty. Sylvia Kennaugh of the Nobles Nutters during their second match against Seven Up prevented a six game victory by taking the only win for the Nutters against Eddie Carlisle who scored seventeen. The last game of the day was Mooragh Lakers against Parkers, again one game prevented Parkers from having a clean sweep. It was Sue Gawne and Tracy Moore who took the one and only win for Mooragh Lakers in the doubles game, they kept Peter Karran and Jo Smith to seventeen.

Castletown Cannons took on the newly established team All But and secured two wins, one of the closest being George Peach who held Peter Kennaugh to twenty. All But also had two very close games meaning the win to them when Brian Colquitt beat Joy Stephens to twenty and Celia Joughin did the same to Alan Phair. 

It was all even when Louie’s Angels took on Outsiders, each winning three games but Angels took victory by scoring nine points overall more than Outsiders. Jenny Moore was the closest game, leaving Trevor Quayle to score twenty. All But won two of the six games against Louie’s Angels and had a really closely fought game of doubles, with All But being the victors when Brian Aspen and Peter Kennaugh kept victory from Trish Bull and Caroline Whitehead by a point. The final match of the day was Outsiders against Castletown Cannons which saw Outsiders taking all six games of the match.

Well, it’s that time of year again, after the last season being shortened due to Covid we are back to playing the Outdoor Winter League bowls which for the second-year running is kindly being sponsored by Pronto Plumbing.

The schedule began with a round Robin which took place on Wednesday the 6^th of October. There were 24 members taking part, eleven ladies and thirteen men took to the green. The participants were split into two groups, six pairs in each, one using yellow and the other using black jacks.

The winners of the yellow jack group by eleven points were Joyce Ogden and Alan Phair scoring 45 points, who took victory from Elaine McElroy and Terry Bates (34). Elaine and Terry took second from Caroline Whitehead and Judith Moore (33) by one point.

The black jack group was won by Mark Kelly and Kevin Firth (scoring 41), who beat Peter Kelly and Bryan Corner to 34, with third place taking 28 by Brian Colquitt and Paul Callister.

Saturday the 9^th saw the Castletown Cannons, Castletown Corkers, Louie’s Angels and the newly formed team Noble Nutters on the first league fixtures.
