R.H. Green Fours Winners - 2017
John Kennish, Ken Kinrade (Finch Hill Secretary), David BradfordSaturday saw a quality field of 28 pairs of all ages take to the green at Finch Hill in what were far from pleasant weather conditions.
A number of Island players were entered and made quick work of their first round matches, particularly the pairing of David Bradford and John Kennish who won 21-10 against Adrian Skinner and Rob Cowley. In the other first round matches, Matthew Keggen and Robert Monk had a good win (21-11) against Les Brookes and Reg Tampaza, as did Peter Hughes and Arthur Halsall who came back from 13-14 down with 8 points in 4 ends to take the match 21-14 and there was a similar story with Steve Kelly and David Proctor as they came back from 16-19 down with 5 points from the last 4 ends to win 21-19. There were also some very close matches as Alec Taylor and Derek Allen beat Eddie Carlyle and Nathan Hamilton by a single point and Roy Murphy and Peter Karran also beat Bod and Glenn Boland by the same margin. Father and son team of Glynn and Ryan Hargraves had a close match with Frank Watson and Jerome Surridge but narrowly lost out 21-18.
In the second round John Kennish and David Bradford had an even more impressive win against Derek Allen and Alec Taylor winning 21-8. Home pairing of John Harris and Sefton Dent had a good win over Peter Smith and Peter Woods by 21-15, helped by a 4 pointer in the final end, while Steve Kelly and David Proctor beat Jeff Wilson and Bob Berry by the same score. The other local pairing of Peter Hughes and Arthur Halsall were unlucky to lose by the single point to Frank Watson and Jerome Surridge as were Steve Waters and James Teare who also lost by the same margin to Thomas Keggen and Steve Hall and a similar scoreline saw Brian Kelly and Harry Barton overcome Matthew Keggen and Robert Monk. Arnie Withers and Mikey Collister came close but eventually lost out to another father and son team of Colin and Tom Kelly 21-18 while Neil Withers and Paul Dunn overcame Roy Murphy and Peter Karran 21-17.
John Kennish and David Bradford got the quarter finals off to a fast start as they beat John Harris and Sefton Dent by 21-8 but other matches were closer as Steve Kelly and David Proctor overcame Neil Withers and Paul Dunn 21-15 and Tom and Colin Kelly beat Thomas Keggen and Steve Hall 21-14. The last quarter final was a much closer affair and Brian Kelly and Harry Barton must have thought they were on for a win but got stuck on 20 points for four ends only to see Jerome Surridge and Frank Watson pip them at the post with a 3 pointer in the final end.
The semi-finals saw John Kennish and David Bradford take on Steve Kelly and David Proctor and once again the quality of play from Kennish and Bradford was just too much for Kelly and Proctor as they ran out comfortable winners 21-12.
The other semi-final was between the in form father and son team of Tom and Colin Kelly and the pairing of Frank Watson and Jerome Surridge who had won their last two matches by a single point, and once again the match went with the form book as the Kelly’s won the match 21-11.
With a cloudy sky and increasing wind, conditions were far from ideal but the quality of the bowls in the final was exceptional as some of the Islands best players took to the green. It was the Kelly’s who took an early hold on the match leading 12-7 and 15-11 helped by their corner to corner play. However, when Kennish and Bradford had the jack they were prepared to shorten the lengths to disrupt the Kelly’s rhythm and at one point went ahead 16-15. The Kelly’s then got hold of the jack and once they went corner to corner again they bagged another 5 points in three ends to lead 20-16 but couldn’t finish off the match as Kennish and Bradford regained the jack. Returning to the shorter length paid dividends once again for Kennish and Bradford and they made no mistake as they reeled off 5 points in the next three ends to take the match and overall competition 21-20.
The prize presentation was made by Ken Kinrade, Competition Secretary for Finch Hill with the losing semi finalists receiving £20 Newsbeat vouchers, the losing finalists £50 Newsbeat vouchers and the winners £100 Newsbeat vouchers and the R H Green Cup.

Kennish Wins Another Association Singles Title
Despite the roads being closed on Saturday due to the TT races, there was a good entry of 36 taking part in the Association Singles held at Castletown.
Losing out in the quarter-finals were Kevin Quirk (Onchan), David Bradford (South Ramsey), Matthew Keggen (Marown), and former home-greener Bob Clark (Marown).
The first semi-final had John Kennish (South Ramsey) easing to a 21-6 win over Jordan Cain (Onchan) to book his place in the final. In the other semi-final, Glynn Hargraves (South Ramsey) was up against Tom Kelly (Peel), with Hargraves taking an early lead, Kelly never really closed the gap with Hargraves taking a 21-15 win.
In the final Kennish was quick out of the blocks, taking an early lead, before Hargraves got in to close the gap on Kennish. Just as Hargraves was working his way back into the game Kennish pulled out some good length bowls to get back in and put some distance between his team mate. From there Kennish changed the mark he was playing to secure a 21-13 win and a deserved second Association singles victory following his success at Douglas in April.
At the conclusion of play the presentation was made by Association competition secretary Matthew Keggen, who thanked Castletown Bowling Club for hosting the competition, everyone who supported the competition.

Tuesday 23 May – Both Port St Mary teams had a successful morning as A and B each posted a maximum. The A team played Villa and won three of their games to single figures, the biggest resistance being put up by Margaret Corlett who reached 16 against Win Collister. The B team played host to Mooragh Park, who fought well with four of their players reaching double figures. Castletown fell four points short of a full house as Kay Primrose-Smith, who came through 21-20 against Anne Oates, and Steff Swift both won their games for Breagle. Port Erin had the better of Ballaugh, in a match where all six players reached double figures, winning 4-2 on games. Each encounter at Marown was very close, the match ending level on games with no player scoring less than 16. Two of the games went all the way with Celia Joughin losing out 20-21 to Joyce Gardiner, and Marcia Pearson just pipping Rita Callan by the same score. It was also close at Peel where it ended level on games, the home side taking the match by 6 points..
Thursday 25 May – The good week continued for Marown as they travelled north to Mooragh Park, where they replicated Tuesday’s score of 119, winning five games, the lone winner for the home side being Maureen Lacey. Steff Swift continued her good form from Tuesday, being the only winner for Breagle against Port St Mary A, who won three of their five games to single figures. Edwina Reid spoiled the party for Douglas as her win denied them a full house, while Port Erin had a 4-2 win over Peel, winning two games to single figures. The two winners for the visitors being Heather Horsburgh and Mary Moffatt, Joyce Kelly making a spirited come-back to reach 16 from all but 8 down. Nobles visited Castletown where they had two winners, Sylvia Kennaugh, to single figures, and Josie Harding. For the home side Marie Ashurst also had a win to single figures. It was all square on games at Onchan, the closest match seeing Joan Murphy come through 21-18 against Lynda Clarke.
Ladies’ Night League Friday 26 May
It does not happen very often but in the C Tarleton Hodgson sponsored Ladies’ league on Friday 26 May the match between Peel Sunset and Douglas ended drawn on points, despite the visitors winning 5-4 on games. Three wins to single figures by the home side balanced out the one by Jan Osborne for Douglas, the result showing the value of fighting for every point even if you still end up losing your game. Mooragh Park had a successful journey to Ballaugh, where they won 5-4 on games, but there were some very close match-ups with Gill Morgan reaching 19 against Ann Gale and in reply Pat Mason just losing out 20-21 to Ann Chapman. Purt le Moirrey were up against it when South Ramsey won seven games, four of them to single figures, but managed to register two good wins by Linda Dawson and Tracy Moore. Port Erin were also under the cosh when hosting Port St Mary, who also won seven games. The two winners for the home side were Caroline Whitehead and Lynda Cadamy who won to single figures, while Mavis Franks and Carol Kaye both reached 20 against Katy Williams and Win Collister respectively. Nobles went down 4-5 to Castletown. Rebecca Teare won to single figures, as did Kim Foy and Hannah Drewett for the visitors. Marown were another side with a ruthless streak, winning seven games at Onchan, four of them to single figures. The two winners for the home side were Libby Andrade and Marilyn Ellison..
Only two points seperate the top five.
League leaders Castletown A took on their B Team and ran out 8-0 winners but there were some close games in this match with two going to 21-20.
Onchan B hosted South Ramsey and this ended as a draw on a day when Onchan A had a bye.
Douglas A hosted the strong Nobles A side and in a competitive match at the Villa this ended 4-4 while back at Nobles Park the Nobles B Team took a 5-3 victory over Douglas B.
In a match with some very close games Ballaugh B played out a 5-3 win over North Ramsey B and a little further North at the Mooragh Park North Ramsey A and Ballaugh A played out a draw.
In the Central Valley it was Marown who took the honours in their match against Peel Sunset B with a 6-2 home win John Lightfoot and Jeff Wilson being the winners for the Peel side.
Peel Sunset A had a 7-1 win over Finch Hill while the Peel Sunset C Team lost by the same score to Port St Mary A.
Port Erin made the short trip to play Port St Mary B and this ended in a draw.
So Game 18 saw Castletown A travelling a little farther South to take on a tough Port St Mary A side and it was the men from Purt la Morra who took the points with a 6-2 win while back at Castletown the Castletown B side took a 5-3 win over Port St Mary B.
Onchan A had the home advantage against Nobles B and they certainly used that advantage as they beat the ‘Nobles’ side 7-1 with Terry Bates being the only winner for ‘Nobles’. In the ‘reverse’ fixture Nobles A hosted Onchan B and the lads from Onchan Park came away with a good 5-3 win in this one.
There were ‘close encounters of the Ballaugh kind’ as Ballaugh A beat their B Team 6-2 with Ray Parry and Bobby Clayton being the two winners for the B Team.
Douglas A travelled across Town to draw with Finch Hill while the Douglas B Team travelled to Crosby where they lost 7-1 to Marown with Bob Banning
for the side from the Villa as he just failed to beat Keith Watterson as he lost 21-20.
Peel Sunset A visited Port Erin and came away with a 5-3 win while the Peel B Team played the Peel C Team with the B Team winning 6-2.
South Ramsey hosted North Ramsey A with South Ramsey winning 5-3.
So after 18 games the top five in the League are separated by only two points with Castletown A and Onchan A both on 28 points followed by Peel Sunset A, Marown and Port St Mary A.
In the Individual Merit Chris Oates of Port St Mary leads having won 17 out of 17 games and he is followed by Peter Kelly of Marown and Mike Thomas of Onchan A who have both won 16 out of 17.
