Ladies’ over 60’s league Tuesday 4 August

Pat Kelly spoiled the party for Port St Mary A, in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league on Tuesday 4 August, as her 21-20 win over Rita Callister left the host side just one point short of a maximum, while Nobles fell just short of the 120 point mark as Kay Primrose-Smith and Gwen Tuck won their games for Breagle. It was 3-3 at Ballaugh, but wins to single figures by Voirrey Oates and Mary Simmonds gave the home side a comfortable victory. Two matches of note saw Joyce Kelly come through 21-19 against Brenda Bowyer and Mary Moffatt pip Jenny Maddrell 21-20. Onchan B were a player short at Mooragh Park where they had their blushes spared by Eileen Killey whose win prevented their being white-washed. Onchan A had a good win over Castletown, winning 4 games, two of them to single figures. The two winners for the visitors were Ann Hollingworth and Anne Oates while Sue Peach nearly levelled the game score, reaching 19 against Dee Lewis. Douglas and Port St Mary B ended level on games but two wins to single figures and Jan Osborne’s 20 against Edwina Reid gave Douglas the advantage on chalks. The two winners for Marown at Port Erin were Mair Moore, to single figures, and Mary Alderson who came through 21-20 against Mavis Franks.

Onchan Close In On Title

Another brilliant week for league leaders Onchan A leaves them within touching difference of retaining their Isle of Man bank Men’s Division One Title.

Two more superb results leaves them needing just fifteen points from their remaining three games to make certain of their twelfth title in just thirteen years, although with the champions in such a rich vein of form I am certain it will be all over this week.

They would have been pleased with an above par 8-2 home win over South Ramsey on Monday night before yet another maximum 10-0 win, this time at the expense of Peel A, on Wednesday.

Second placed Marown only had one game last week and put in a strong performance winning 9-1 away at Peel A. They have a game in hand over Onchan but at twenty six points adrift with only forty for them to play for nothing short of a miracle will be enough if they want to halt the champions charge.

Douglas A remain in third place, having played a game more than the two teams below them, after an impressive 9-1 away win at Finch Hill A was followed up with a hard fought 6-4 home win over fourth placed Port St Mary A.

Port had a tough week and had to fight hard in their first game just getting the better of North Ramsey 7-3 at the Mooragh.

Ramsey teams occupy 5th and 6th places after South A finished the week on a high with a 10-0 mauling of Port Erin A at home and North A picked up and 8-2 home win over Nobles A.

With second division leaders South Ramsey B sitting out Douglas B ceased their opportunity and moved into pole position thanks to an 8-2 home win over Nobles B. The Villa men now lead by a solitary point and with three games to go its all to play for in the battle for silverware.

Port St Mary B are third seven points further back after they had to dig deep to beat Peel B 6-4 at home.

Its just as tight at the top of Division 3 with Peel C holding the slenderest of leads over Onchan C after they both picked up respective 7-3 wins. Port St Mary D are still in with an outside chance of the title five points further back.

RNLI Trophy

Neil Withers was the victor of Nobles on Saturday after he lifted the RNLI Trophy after a superb final win over John Kennish on the green where he won the June Festival.

It was an even affair in the early stages before Kennish moved into a 10-6 lead. This is when Withers really found his form winning eight of the next nine ends to move 17-11 ahead. Kennish dug deep but it wasn’t to be with the Crosby man having enough in the tank to get home 21-14.

Kennish had to be at his best in the Semi-Final as he edged past Kevin Quirk 21-19 whilst Withers ended the challenge of elder statesman Mike Hargraves 21-13.

Fallers at the quarter final stage were Jordan Cain, Ian Kissack, David Bradford and Bernard Thackrah.

South Ramsey Win Rayner Shield

After thirty three years of waiting South Ramsey A once again won the coveted Rayner Shield with a convincing 7-2 win over Port St Mary A at NoblesPark on Friday.

With Port having taught South a lesson when they played in the league just a few games ago all looked set for the southerners to etch their name on the trophy for the first time, but no body told the Northerners this.

They were simply brilliant. Every single one of them put in a cup final performance and in this gear it’s hard to think that even Onchan A or Marown A could have stopped them in their tacks.

Things started well for the Ramsey side with Captain John Kennish winning on the same green he won the June Festival on as he saw off the only other Manx Man to make festival finals day Ewan Cooil 21-14.

On paper the match looked like it could go to the wire and with Paul Skelly levelling things for Port with a 21-13 win over Chas Grills it looked like it could do just that.

Just then South moved into top gear with the next three games off the green all going in their favour with Alan Moore beating Juan Hargraves 21-12, Jerome Surridge seeing off the challenge of Mikey Collister 21-16 and Peter Collister getting the better of Port Captain Rob Cooil 21-12.

Trevor Quayle got one back for the Spaniards beating semi final hero James Teare 21-10 before it was all over. The next tree games were off the green in quick succession as John Kennish’s charges sealed victory in devastating fashion with Dave ‘Dido’ Kelly beating Ron Mayxcox 21-5, Gary Conwell defeating Ray Watterson 21 9 and Adrian Skinner finding his best to come home 21-10 against Chris Oates.

My heart goes out to Port St Mary who have been brilliant all season and again fall at the final hurdle, and I am certain they will have their day, but this wasn’t it. The day belonged to South Ramsey who were at their majestic best and a joy to behold and they deserve every accolade afforded them after a fantastic performance.

Ladies’ over 60’s league Thursday 30 July

Port St Mary B were top scorers on Thursday 30 July as they dropped just 10 points against Mooragh Park, although their match ended all square on games as all six players had scores of 16 or better. Wendy Mc Dowell spared the blushes of Onchan B as her win denied Onchan A a full house. Villa Were denied a maximum by Kay Primrose Smith, although Breagle almost got another game as Hesba Skelly reached 19 against Brenda Williams, while it was Mary Moffatt who spoiled the party for Port St Mary A on their visit to Peel with her win to single figures Despite the match ending level on games at Port Erin, the home side winning all three to single figures gave them a strong advantage on points. Shirley Whelan’s win to single figures was the bright spot for Marown against Douglas A although Bunty Corkill’s 19 against Kath King and Margaret Scarffe’s 20 against Patsy Rush gave them a reasonable points total. Apart from the game between Marie Ashurst and Peggy Griffin, which went Marie’s way 21-18, the games between Castletown and Ballaugh were reasonably one-sided with a win to single figures for each side. Winning 4-2 on games also gave the home side the advantage on chalks.

Ladies’ league Friday 31 July

A maximum score of 189 is a rare thing in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd sponsored ladies’ league, but Castletown achieved one on Friday 31 July against Douglas. It was unfortunate that Douglas were a player short, but the eight that did played put up a spirited show, all reaching double figures. Jan Osborne came closest to giving the visitors a game reaching 20 against Ann Hollingworth. South Ramsey were another high-scoring team, winning seven games, Lyn Bolton winning to single figures. The two winners for Ballaugh were Brenda Bowyer and Ellie Faragher. Peel Sunset had a tough time against Port St Mary, winning only three games, courtesy of Joyce Kelly, whose battle against Val Macfarlane went her way 21-19, Philippa Fletcher and Heather Horsburgh. Sue Jones almost added another game losing out 20-21 to Tricia Bull. Port Erin did not enjoy their journey north, as Mooragh Park won 6-3 on games, three of them to single figures, the winners for the visitors being, Di Benson, Caroline Whitehead and Lynda Cadamy who also won to single figures. Purt le Moirrey had the better of Marown 5-4 on games with two wins to single figures. In reply Lil Smith also won to single figures but it was not enough to deny the home side the advantage on points. It was unfortunate that Onchan were a player short as, apart from Pat Dacre’s win to single figures, there were some very close games.

Flo Doan Ladies’ Doubles

The Flo Doan Ladies’ doubles was played at Peel on Saturday 1 August. Having been cancelled last year because of the rainy conditions, the weather made amends this year giving beautiful conditions which together with a well-running green led to some fine bowling.

Semi-finals: Mary Moffatt and Cath Parker 21, Josie Harding and Flo Price 9; Janet Monk and Lilian Slinger 21, Lynda Cadamy and Caroline Whitehead 12.

Although the first two ends were shared, Janet and Lilian soon took control winning the next four ends, including a 3 and a 4, to take a 16-7 lead. Mary and Cath could find no way to contain the mother-daughter combo, and despite winning two more singles had to concede the title to their opponents 21-9.

The presentation was made by club captain, Heather Horsburgh, who thanked all those who had stayed to the end, those who had helped with the smooth running of the event and the green keeper for the excellent green.

Castletown Narrow Gap on North Ramsey

This weeks Over 60’s Bowls has been marred with controversy after Port St Mary B decided to concede their game at North Ramsey B, due allegedly to the fact that some of their players were also playing at North Ramsey in the evening! Actions like this have a serious effect not only on the running of the league and also the merit competition, and it seems inconceivable that they were unable to muster a team from the players available. I would like to add that North Ramsey A are the innocent party in this, and I am sure they would have definitely preferred to have played rather than be given a walkover. Teams should play each and every game, and not decide not to attend, when it suits them, as this not only affects the opposition it also affects each and every team in the league, and would result in anarchy if other teams took similar action. I am sure the Executive Committee will come up with a more suitable punishment than the docking of two points should anything like this happen again, for the good of our sport.

Enough ranting, on with the game, this week with North Ramsey sitting a game out, Castletown narrowed the gap to three points with a very close away win at Marown with two of the two players winning to all but the 5-3 victory could just of easily been reversed. At home on the Thursday Town A hit top form against Nobles B inflicting a whitewash on the visitors. Port St Mary A dropped a point on their visit to Douglas A before beating North Ramsey B 7-1 To lie four points behind Castletown A, Onchan have moved up to fourth place on 36 points two behind PSM A, missing the chance to close right up by getting draws at South Ramsey, then being held by Peel A at home, Peel A are level with Ballaugh on 33 points 3 behind Onchan, Ballaugh having a full house this week with two 5-3 wins at home to Finch Hill and Away to Onchan B, next up one point behind come Castletown B, Nobles A and Douglas A, Castletown B beat Port Erin 7-1 before going down 5-3 at Nobles A, who in turn lost to Peel A in their other match. Douglas A had two tough games and came away with three points holding PSM A before winning at Marown 5-3. With South Ramsey and Marown on 31 points only two points separate 5th to 11th positions. The Merit is led by Stuart Garrett of Douglas who has won 24 games on 23 wins are Mike Hargraves (Castletown) and Geoff Porter (North Ramsey) with 22 victories are Chas Grills (South Ramsey) and Ron Maycox (Port St Mary) while on 21 wins are Tony Carroon (Peel B), Roger Thomas (South Ramsey), George Peach (Castletown B) and Colin Hinds (Onchan). The Popular Charlie Howland Pairs Competition was played at Ballaugh on Friday in good conditions with 24 pairs in contention. After some excellent bowling throughout the competition the Onchan Pairing of Mike Thomas and Paul Bailey were the victors over home green pairing Dave Foulis and Paul Bradford 21-19 in a very thrilling final, the losing semi-finalist were also both from Ballaugh, Dave McTaggart and Arthur Moore and John Keenan and Peter Graham. The Over 60’s are very grateful for Charlie Howland for his wonderful sponsorship of the competition, Ballaugh Bowling Club for being such good hosts and the ladies in the kitchen for keeping everyone fed and watered throughout the afternoon. The Ismay Cup Final between North Ramsey A and Port St Mary A will be held at Nobles Green on Wednesday 12th August 2pm start

North Ramsey A remain in clear lead of Over 60’s

The Tower Insurance Over 60’s League stills has North Ramsey A as top dogs after a 7-1 home victory over Nobles B on Tuesday, however they were slightly fortunate on their visit to Onchan B winning 5-3 including a walkover as Onchan B only had seven players available, The Southside Giants, Castletown A and Port St Mary A continue their chase of the leader, both also winning both games, Town went to their bogey green Port Erin and came away with a 7-1 win before using home green advantage to see of South Ramsey 5-3. Port St Mary had the result of the week going to Peel A and demolishing them 7-1 before whitewashing visitors Port Erin. Nobles A had the bragging rights against rivals Douglas A by using home advantage to win 7-1 with Vinty Dugdale being the first player to beat Stuart Garrett in the league this season, Onchan A have also hit form at present and had a whitewash over Finch Hill, and to show how close games can be North Ramsey B who are near the foot of the table nearly pulled of a surprise by only just going down 5-3 to Onchan A with North Ramsey Players losing to 20 and 19, Ballaugh also had a good week winning at Port St Mary B and then seeing of Castletown B, Another team moving up the league are Marown who collected four points this week with 5-3 wins over Douglas and Port St Mary B. The Merit Table has a new leader in Geoff Porter of North Ramsey who is fractionally ahead of Stuart Garrett of Douglas, both having won 22 games, Geoff missed out on opening up a bigger gap by losing to Ken Bridson of Onchan on the Thursday. On 21 wins come Chas Grills of Ramsey and Mike Hargraves of Castletown, with Ron Maycox of Port St Mary and Roger Thomas of South Ramsey on 20 wins. This week also saw the semi-finals of the Ismay Cup, with as expected the two home teams won both by 7-2 scores, North Ramsey A beating Port Erin and Port St Mary A defeating Peel B, This should make a very close final between two of the big guns in the league,
