Ladies’ over 60’s 8 July
On a morning that produced two maximum scores in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league the match between Villa and Douglas was notable for ending with just one point between the two teams. The visitors had the advantage 4-2 on games although the game between Kay McKiernan and Lynne Mansley could have gone either way as Lynne just edged it 21-20.Onchan A were unfortunately a player short against Noble’s Mixed, but wins by Wendy McDowell and Phyllis Gelling managed to keep the visitor’s score below 100 points. Ballaugh won four games, with Ann Gale winning to single figures, against Port Erin whose two winners were Mavis Franks and Kay Primrose-Smith who also won to single figures. Wins by Mary Alderson and Margaret Scarffe at Port St Mary A denied the home side a maximum although they fell just five points short with three of their players winning to single figures. A full house was achieved by Mooragh Park at the expense of Port St Mary B although they were almost denied by Edwina Reid who reached 20 against Mary Kinrade, while Peel Sunset won all six games against Castletown to achieve their first maximum of the season. .
Ladies Senior County Merit
A ladies team of nine senior Isle of Man Crown Green bowlers recently represented the island in the British Crown Green Senior County Merit which was held at Vale Park, Todmorden, West Yorks. The weather was kind although there was a short shower mid afternoon, however it didn’t spoil the day.
The competition format was four groups of four counties who played each other on a round robin basis and the winners from each group then played in the semi final and subsequent winners went on to the final.
The Isle of Man team were drawn in a tough group and also had to combat a very fast tricky green which proved a problem in the first game against a strong Wirral team but then an improvement with the second against Yorkshire (previous winners and this year’s finalists) and a great result in the third beating last years winners (Gtr Manchester) The eventual winners were North Shropshire who were first time winners.
The IOM team bonded together under the leadership of captain Val MacFarlane who kept the team’s spirit up all day.
Thanks go to our referee Mary Simmonds for her hard work all day and for keeping us and some of the other referees in order!! Thanks also to those who came along on the trip to support – it was much appreciated by all the team.

Ladies’ Manx Championship 2014
There was a disappointing entry of 29 for the Manx Championships played at Castletown on Saturday 5 July, which meant that the event was completed in one day rather than the two days scheduled.
On a warm sunny day, on a tricky green that was running well, there was some excellent bowling and some very close games, particularly in the latter stages.
Quarter-finals: Janet Monk 21, Chris Price 20; Elaine Moore 21, Hannah Kermode 20; Ann Hollingworth 21, Tricia Bull 15; Amanda Lawler 21, Kellie Maddrell – Reeve 7.
Semi-finals: Janet Monk 21, Elaine Moore 14; Amanda Lawler 21, Ann Hollingworth 20.
In the final Amanda started with a 2 on the first end before Janet took the next six ends and a lead of 9-2. From that point Amanda had the upper hand over the next fourteen ends, tying the score at 13-13. A single followed by three 2’s took Janet to “all but”, and, despite her opponent clawing back the next two ends, she ran out the winner 21-15.
This gave Janet the title for the sixth time and she will be a great ambassador representing the island at the “Champion of Champions” in Blackpool at the end of September.
The presentation was made by Association president, Pat Robertson, who thanked the Castletown club for the use of their green and their help during the afternoon – particular thanks went to the green keeper for the condition of the playing surface. Thanks also went to those responsible for running the sheet, everyone who had entered and all those who had stayed behind to watch the final. She stated that she had been very impressed by the standard of play, and by how smart the players looked in “dress code”.
Ladies’ League Friday 4 July
Heavy rain on Friday 4 July meant that only two games were able to take place in the C Tarleton Hodgson and Son Ltd ladies’ league.
Peel Sunset travelled to Ballaugh where, although winning 5-4 on games they scraped victory by just 5 points. Philippa Taylor won to single figures as did Barbara Graham and Mary Simmonds for the home side. Two matches went all the way with Jenny Maddrell losing out 20-21 to Joyce Kelly in what was definitely “a game of two halves” while Jayne Smith went down to Brenda Bowyer by the same score. Noble’s Mixed, like so many teams, struggled on their visit to Mooragh Park, the home side taking the match 6-3 on games with three of their players winning to single figures. The three winners for the visitors were Rebecca Teare, Sylvia Kennaugh and Lin Ruscoe.
Rollercoaster week for Over 60’s
The Tower Insurance Over 60 League had more twists and turns than the big dipper at Blackpool, as Castletown A travelled to Onchan A on Tuesday and managed to come home with a point in a game that Town’s Derek Lewney won his game against Les McLennan 21-20, to let the Town of the hook, Port St Mary A gained another point on their Southside rivals with a 6-2 win at Nobles Park to close the gap to 2 points at the top. Peel A had a visit from a depleted Onchan B and used home advantage to notch another two points with a 6-2 victory, while South Ramsey also kept up the pressure with a very tight 5-3 home win over Marown with South Ramsey’s Bill Callow beating Arnie Withers 21-20 in an extremely close game. North Ramsey A had a 5-3 win over Peel B to keep in touch with the top bunch, while lower down the table Castletown B defeated Douglas A, with unfortunately Norman Kneen of Douglas feeling unwell and being taken to hospital for a check up during his game, best wishes for a speedy recovery from everyone Norman. Port Erin shared the points at home to Noble’s Mixed with Port Erin’s Derek Allen just losing out to Noble’s Mixed skipper Peter Morris in another all but across game. With Port St Mary B doing well to take a point of Finch Hill A with the experienced Archie Collister just getting the better of the Finch’s captain Sefton Dent in another 21-20 win. Ballaugh had a 5-3 win at Finch Hill B with home team captain Malcolm Black just losing out to Richard Faragher in yet another 21-20 game. Douglas B came very close to getting their first point of the season with Brian Oliver just losing out to Ray Parry 21-20.
The second round of games saw Castletown A win at home against Noble’s Park 7-1 while Port St Mary A also won comfortably against Douglas B 6-2 with Peel A having a difficult trip to Ballaugh but still came away 6-2 winners to keep their hopes of a first championship alive, The surprise of the round was the performance of Peel B who held South Ramsey to a 4-4 draw at Peel while Onchan A travelled to Marown and suffered with a 5-3 defeat, with Les McLennan of Onchan and Arnie Withers of Marown both winning to 19, and Peter Kelly of Marown suffering only his second loss of the season to Colin Hinds. North Ramsey A also dropped a point with a 4-4 draw at Finch Hill B. Port St Mary B travelled to Douglas A and came away with both points, while in another game with a couple of very close games,Vinty Dugdale beating Juan Kermode, and John Ruscoe losing to Ron Williams 21-20 Nobles Mixed had a 5-3 victory over Castletown B. Onchan B used the lightning fast green at Nobles 3 to their advantage with a 5-3 win over Port Erin. with North Ramsey B using home advantage to defeat Finch Hill B. The last two games mentioned saw the teams meet the day before for the Semi Finals of the Mini Cup with Port Erin entertaining the holders Onchan B and losing out by 6 -3 and Finch Hill B also unable to make home advantage pay against North Ramsey B by also going down 6-3. to set up a final between Onchan A and North Ramsey B. The Ismay Cup Semis were also played and this time it was both home teams that won 6-3 . Peel A defeating Port St Mary A and North Ramsey A doing likewise to Finch Hill A. to leave the Final between North Ramsey A and Peel A. venues for both finals will be notified shortly. The Individual Merit sees Dave Foulis (Ballaugh) sitting alone on top of the pile with 20 wins followed by Mike Thomas (Onchan) and Peter Kelly (Marown) who both lost this week on 19, with on 18 wins are Harry Kelly (Peel), Chas Grills (South Ramsey), Stuart Garrett (Douglas), the PSM pair of Ron Maycox and Ray Maddrell and the Castletown duo of Dave Faragher and Collin Holland.
Port St Mary defeat Peel to keep up challenge for title
The Tower Insurance Over 60’s League rolls relentlessly on with the last years champions Castletown A still holding a two point lead over Port St Mary A after the last two series of games. The Town had relatively easy games against the two teams at the tale end of the league winning 7-1 at Douglas B, and unfortunately Finch Hill B were unable to field a team for their visit to Castletown which resulted in an 8-0 walkover for the Town and two points deducted for Finch Hill B. Port St Mary A visited Finch Hill B on Tuesday and inflicted an 8-0 win but on Thursday they entertained current third placed Peel A who beat North Ramsey B on Tuesday 7-1 but then went down 6-2 at Port St Mary in a very close game Peel losing three games 21-20, This allowed South Ramsey to leapfrog Peel and are a further 2 points behind Port, and one ahead of Peel with victories at home to Finch Hill A 5-3 and at Douglas A by 6-2. North Ramsey A’s title hopes are slipping after being held to two draws, at home to Douglas A and away to Nobles Mxd. while Onchan A were held to surprising draw at home to Peel B , but got back on track by taking all the points in a 5-3 win at Finch Hill B. Marown move into 7th place with four points this week, while Castletown B drop to 8th after only picking up one point in their draw with Onchan B, who are in ninth place just a point behind the town B, while Ballaugh now in tenth place had a good week with four points from their trip to Port Erin and the visit of Castletown B both 5-3 wins.with Nobles Mixed just a point behind after a win and draw, then come Finch Hill A, Douglas A and Port Erin who are all mid table, with North Ramsey B four points behind Port Erin but a similar number ahead of Nobles Park. Peel B are climbing the table and although 3rd from the bottom are now in touch with Port St Mary B and Noble’s Park who are one and two points ahead of them. The Merit has again seen a change with Dave Foulis of Ballaugh losing to Bernard Thakrah at Port Erin, this means that Peter Kelly of Ballaugh moves ahead again both players on 21 wins, with on 19 wins come a whole scutch of players, Mike Thomas (Onchan), Harry Kelly(Peel), Chas Grills (S Ramsey), Ron Maycox and Ray Maddrell of PSM and the Town pairing of Dave Faragher and Collin Holland.
Next week sees just one set of games on the Tuesday with the top fixture pairing 4th placed Peel A at home to leaders Castletown A, with the Wednesday and Thursday being taken up with the Over 60’s qualifying at Douglas.
Ladies’ over 60’s 3 July
Port St Mary A have extended their lead at the top of the table after they were visited by Mooragh Park on Thursday 3 July. Taking five games, with Win Collister and Val Macfarlane winning to single figures, they were denied a maximum by. Jean Radcliffe winning her game for the visitors. There was a strong performance by Ballaugh at Noble’s Mixed as they dropped just 5 points. With every player reaching double figures, Mixed were also able to post a score over 100. The match at Castletown ended level on games but wins to single figures by Marie Ashurst, Ann Hollingworth and Anne Oates, together with Barbara Young reaching 20 against Chris Holland, gave the home side a considerable points advantage. A good win to single figures by Muriel Cain denied Port Erin a full house while at Noble‘s 3 the highlight of the morning was the game between Theresia Britten and Joyce Kelly, with Joyce eventually coming through 21-19. Onchan B‘s other winner was Viv Rush who won to single figures. Onchan A had the better of Marown 4-2 on games with Hazel Hughes winning to single figures, the two winners for Marown being Mary Alderson and Celia Joughin..
Ladies’ over 60’s 1 July
It was a strange match at Peel on Tuesday 1 July in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league with Joyce Kelly and Mary Moffatt for the home side and Jan Osborne for Douglas having convincing wins to single figures. On the other hand Patsy Rush and Rose Corfield had a close match with Patsy coming through 21-19 while Heather Horsburgh and Jo Oldam kept the rest waiting for their dinner before Heather eventually came through 21-20.Noble’s Mixed had the better of Villa 4-2 on games in a high-scoring match, the two winners for the home side being Muriel Cain and Peggy Chapman, while Marilyn Ellison spoiled the party for Port St Mary B being the lone winner for Onchan B. All the games went to double figures at Onchan A where Hazel Hughes and Flo Kelly were the two winners for the home side while Heather Reynolds put up a battling performance to reach 19 against Tricia Bull. Rita Callan and Lilian Slinger won to single figures against Castletown, whose two winners were Anne Oates and Ann Hollingworth, while Ballaugh won 4-2 on games against Marown with Jenny Maddrell winning to single figures as did Mary Alderson for the visitors.

Ladies’ over 60’s league Thursday 26 June
Fixtures in the Trend sponsored ladies’ over 60’s league reached the half-way stage on Thursday 26 June. Port St Mary start the second half with a 100 point advantage over second placed Mooragh Park while Peel Sunset are not too far behind closely followed by Noble’s Mixed and Ballaugh.
Port St Mary did not have it all their own way at Ballaugh winning only two games. A win to single figures by Margaret Tasker together with a win by Tricia Bull and Val Macfarlane reaching 20 against Jenny Maddrell gave them a points win. Onchan A were unfortunately a player short against Mooragh Park who fell short of a maximum thanks to a win by Ann Watterson for the home side. Wins by Voirrey Curphey and Jean Thackrah, who edged out Connie Pettegrew 21-20, denied Peel Sunset a maximum against Port Erin. The score was close at the Villa despite the home side winning 5-1 on games. A win to single figures by Mary Alderson together with the other players getting into double figures meant that Marown lost by just 4 points. It ended level on games at Castletown, but wins to single figures by Marie Ashurst and Sue Peach gave the home side an 11 pojnt lead. Douglas had the better of Port St Mary B 4-2 on games the winners for the home side being Brenda Hawkard and Pauline Worrall.
